Planning Services Division June 2003 Number Twelve Broward County’s Hispanic Population Hispanic persons are one of the largest minority groups in Broward County with over 271,000 residents. This population continues to grow faster than any other group. Historic Population Growth Broward County’s Hispanic population has grown dramatically within the last 30 years. In 1970, the Hispanic population was just over 15,000. By 2000, that number grew to over 271,000 or 17%, of the County’s population. 18% Hispanic Population by Census Tract 16% 250 14% 200 12% 10% 150 8% 100 Percent Population (in thousands) 300 Distribution of Population A large majority of the Hispanic population lives in the west and southwestern portions of the County especially in Miramar, Pembroke Pines, and Weston. Eastern areas such as Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach have a lower percentage of Hispanic residents. 6% 4% 50 Percent of Total Population Less than 10% 10% to 19.9% 20% to 29.9% 30% and Over N 2% 0 0% 1970 1980 1990 Hispanic Population 2000 Percent of Total Population Hispanic Growth Rate The growth of the Hispanic population has occurred at a much faster rate than the County as a whole. Annual growth rates for the Hispanic population have steadily increased over thirty years while the growth rate for the County has declined slightly during the same period. 18% Annual Growth Rate 15% 12% 9% 6% 3% 0% 1970s 1980s Decade Hispanic Population 1990s Total Population Comparison to Other Counties, State, and Nation When compared to other counties in South Florida, Miami-Dade has a much larger Hispanic population (1,300,000) than Broward (271,000). Palm Beach County’s Hispanic population is just over half of Broward’s (141,000). In proportion, Broward’s 17% Hispanic percentage mirrors the State of Florida (17%), while Palm Beach County closely matches the national average (12%). More than half of Miami-Dade County residents are Hispanic (57%). Age Hispanics are younger than the rest of the population with an average age of 32 years versus the County average of 38. 28% of Hispanics are under age 18 and two-thirds are under age 45. These age groups represent 23% and 59% of the County population respectively. At the other end of the spectrum, only 7% of Hispanics are 65 years of age and older while the County average is more than double that amount at 15%. The County average is 42%. Almost 25% of Hispanic families have more than five persons living in the household. The County percentage is 15 %. Households include families, people living alone, roommates, and those not living with relatives. Non-family households have fewer children, so Median Household Income typically exceeds Median Family Income. In Broward County’s Hispanic community, Median Family Income is lower than Median Household Income and lower than the County average. This reflects the difference in character between Hispanic and non-Hispanic families in Broward. Hispanics families are typically larger, with more nonworking members, including children and extended family adults that do not contribute to the family income. $60,000 100,000 $40,000 50,000 $20,000 0 1990 2000 Cuban Puerto Rican Mexican Other Hispanic $0 Median Household Income Median Family Income His panic Broward-by-the-Numbers is a publication from Office of Urban Planning and Redevelopment Planning Services Division 115 South Andrews Ave., Room 329K Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 phone: (954) 357-6612 email: [email protected] www.broward.org/psd.htm Per Capita Income Total Population Broward County Board of County Commissioners Josephus Eggelletion, Jr. Ben Graber Sue Gunzburger Kristin D.
