LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES, GREETING and NOTICES
GOSPEL LESSON
Luke 19:28-40 (Common English Bible)
28
After Jesus said this, he continued on ahead, going up to
Jerusalem. 29 As Jesus came to Bethphage and Bethany on the
Mount of Olives, he gave two disciples a task. 30 He said, “Go
into the village over there. When you enter it, you will find tied
up there a colt that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it
here. 31 If someone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘Its
master needs it.’” 32 Those who had been sent found it exactly as
he had said. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to
them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They replied, “Its
master needs it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their clothes
on the colt, and lifted Jesus onto it. 36 As Jesus rode along, they
spread their clothes on the road.
37
As Jesus approached the road leading down from the Mount of
Olives, the whole throng of his disciples began rejoicing. They
praised God with a loud voice because of all the mighty things
they had seen. 38 They said, “Blessings on the king who comes in
the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest
heavens.” 39 Some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Jesus,
“Teacher, scold your disciples! Tell them to stop!” 40 He
answered, “I tell you, if they were silent, the stones would shout.”
The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.
LENTEN JOURNEY FROM LIGHT TO DARKNESS
Rev. Martin
We have gathered here, week after week, sharing a common quest
for a deeper faith and a deeper experience of the divine. I invite
you now to close your eyes and let go of the things that distract
and concern you. Listen! The time is drawing near. Jesus is
entering Jerusalem. How will we greet him? Will we follow him
all the way to the Cross?
The power of Jesus is that he lived what he taught, even when it led to his death.
He lived with an abiding awareness of God, radiating the light of God in all he said
and did. But that light was too much for the world. There are forces today, as there
were in ancient Judea, that conspire to put it out. Where are we in this drama? What
are we willing to risk to follow Jesus?
[Silent Time]
As we extinguish this light, we acknowledge the darkness and pain of illness and
disease in the world.
[A candle is extinguished.]
Let us pray.
Loving God, there are so many choices before us every day. Choices offered by
our friends, our families, our culture, our own past. Some of them encourage the
well-being of the earth, ourselves and our neighbors; others are destructive.
Help us to distinguish between them. May we learn from the choices of Jesus
and embody compassion, justice, and inclusion in all we say and do. Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL SUNG RESPONSE I Love to Tell the Story
I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glory,
to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

*CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively)
Joy is ours; the exultant crowds welcome Jesus.
Sorrow is ours; we know the crowds will cry out, “Crucify him!”
Joy is ours; the disciples are caught up with enthusiasm for their leader.
Sorrow is ours; the disciples will desert their leader at his moment of need.
Joy is ours; we sense the power of evil on the run.
Sorrow is ours; we realize the huge cost, which is symbolized by the cross.

OFFERTORY PRAYER (In Unison)
The pain of one falsely accused, the loss of one whose friends let him down, the

crucified; in the church, in our troubled world, and within our family circles.
Amen.

REMEMBER, it’s FRIENDS + PRAYERS + FELLOWSHIP at First UMC Hampton!
Did you notice something new in the sanctuary last Sunday? Were you
extra comfortable sitting in the pew? That’s right! We now have brand
new pew cushions gracing our beautiful sanctuary. In the coming weeks,
you will hear more about the evolution of this project and how you can be
a part of it.
For now, I would like to recognize those groups and individuals who played a part in making
the dream a reality from researching the production company to selecting the style, fabric,
and color to helping with disposal and installation: The Worship Committee, The Church
Trustees, The Church Council, Lynn Chandler, Ann Gordon Evans, Linda Marushi,
Carolyn Slye, Richard Slye, Mary Stern, Bill Diggs, Ray Waldon, Ron Rumsey, Jim
Holt, Ed Boyce, Ron Minetree, and staff members Laura Harris and Sondre McCuller.
