Then, for the first time in eight years, you can climb the 354 narrow steps to the top of the Statue of Liberty in New York City. Before you read: ☺ What´s the most famous statue in your country? Describe it. It´s the most famous statue in the world. Until 2001, you could climb inside the Statue of Liberty up a very narrow spiral staircase. It was a long, hot climb. At the top, you were inside the crown. September 11, 2001 But in 2001, New York changed forever. Terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center. The authorities were afraid there would be more attacks on New York´s high buildings and tourist attractions. So they closed the statue´s staircase and crown. July 4, 2009 On American Independence Day 2009,they reopened the crown. But now only 30 visitors per hour can climb up to the crown and back down again and you have to book tickets in advance. If you´re lucky enough to get a ticket, you can enjoy the famous view of the New York City skyline – it´s breath-taking!
