Where are the Millennials? A Study of Population Ages 20-34 in Metro Areas June 2016 Graduation time has arrived once again and as we watch our college and high school graduates move into the next chapter of their lives, we may ponder how this generation will help shape the future of our economy. There are many reports on how the workplace is changing and how the Millennials are different from those who have entered the workforce before them. This report will focus on the geographical part of the story - where are the Millennials? Cyndi Dancy | email [email protected] | web www.garnereconomics.com The Millennial generation, as defined by the Pew Research Center, are those born from 1981 through 1996 and were aged 18 through 33 in 2014. This was the last year of detailed data for all metropolitan statistical areas from the US Census. This article explores millennial aged population in metro areas using data from the US Census American Community Survey using the closest match of age groups – 20 years through 34 years old. Source: Pew Research Center On a broader level, this age group is heavily concentrated in metro areas where 88 percent of those ages 2034 live within cities and counties designated as Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). This aligns with the national ratio of metro and non-metro population distribution with 86 percent of the total population living within MSAs. The areas with the highest percentage of population ages 20-34 in 2014 tended to be smaller MSAs ranging from 82,700 to just under 240,000 in total population. These areas have a large college or military presence within the metro areas which account for the population swell of this age group. Listed below are the top ten metro areas with the highest percent of this younger age group compared to the total population along with a map of this data. To illustrate this, the following table contains the top ten metro areas in terms of percentage of population ages 20-34 years along with a university or military base. The table also contains a high-level view of the combined enrollment and active military personnel derived from those institutions and installations as compared to the total population. Below is a table with metro areas of population ages 20-34 years of one million or more. As a percentage of the total population, these areas are within a few percentage points of the United States (20.6 percent of the population), but collectively, these eleven MSAs contain about 30 percent of the Millennial age group. Most of the larger metro areas have the infrastructure to attract and retain this population group with a sense of place built-in. The youngest Millennials – age 18 in 2014 – are now entering the workforce, enrolling in community college, colleges and universities. They are now the largest living generation and will be the majority of the labor force and entrepreneurial activity fueling our economic future.
