A day in the life of a teenage model
Nineteen-year-old Martin
Maguire is doing a two-year
photography course at college.
He wants to be a fashion
photographer. In his free time,
he works on the other side of
the camera — he’s a model.
Our reporter, Gina, is talking
to Martin in a studio in London
this morning.
Gina: Martin, it’s eight o’clock on
Saturday morning. Do you always
start work very early?
Martin: Yes, sometimes I do. I’m
modelling ten outfits today so
I’m working all day. People think
I just put on different clothes
and the photographer takes my
picture, but it takes a long time
to prepare for each photo.
Gina: Really? What happens?
Martin: First, I look at the clothes
with the stylist. We discuss what
she wants me to do and how she
wants me to look in each photo.
Then, I do my hair and make-up.
Gina: Do you always do it
yourself?
Martin: No, I don’t. I usually have
a hairdresser and make-up artist
to do it for me. I hate wearing
make-up, but you look better
in the photos! After that, I put
on the outfit and go to the set.
That’s where the photographer
takes the photos. The stylist is
there, too. She makes sure I’m
sitting or standing exactly as she
wants and then the photographer
starts taking photos. They both
shout instructions so you have to
listen all the time.
Gina: Why do you like being a
model?
Martin: The work is never the
same. Indoors or outdoors, in a
studio in London or on a beach
in Brighton, casual clothes or
sportswear, it’s different every
time! I love working in different
places. It’s a very interesting job.
Gina: What qualities is it
important to have?
Martin: It’s important to like
working with people because
you work with different models,
stylists and photographers on
each job. You have to be patient,

too. You spend a lot of time

Gina: You want to be a

help you?
Martin: Yes, it does. It teaches
me how to give instructions to
the models when I’m taking their
photos.
Gina: Well, thank you for talking
to me, Martin, and good luck with
