HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Health Effects Acute Swallowed : Harmful if swallowed. May cause gastrointestinal upset. Causes severe burning in mouth and throat, pain in chest and vomiting. May also cause severe irritation to the mouth, oesophagus and stomach after prolonged exposure. Large quantities may cause symptoms similar to inhalation. Possible hepato-renal (liver and kidney) problems and cardiovascular problems may occur. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, perforation with severe abdominal pain and breathing difficulties. Eye : May cause moderate to severe irritation to the eye with a passing sensation of intense burning. Splashes may cause severe irritation and possible eye damage. Skin : Contact with skin may result in irritation. Can be absorbed through the skin with resultant toxic affects. Inhaled : Acts as a relatively potent anaesthetic. May cause nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness and headache. High concentrations can cause central nervous system depression and cardiac arrhythmia. Exposure to higher concentrations may result in confusion, hallucinations, perceptual distortions, delirium, shortness of breath; possibly leading to loss of consciousness and even death. May cause liver injury and blood disorders. Cardiac disorders are aggravated by stress and lack of oxygen. Chronic : Possible risk of irreversible effects. Prolonged inhalation or ingestion may cause liver and kidney disorders, central nervous system problems, gastro-intestinal problems and death. Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure through inhalation and if swallowed. Other information : May cause adverse reproductive effects such as birth defects, miscarriages or infertility based on animal studies. First Aid Swallowed : Rinse mouth thoroughly with water immediately. give plenty of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical assistance. Eye : Immediately irrigate with copious quantity of water for at least 15 minutes. Eyelids to be held open. Seek medical attention. Skin : Wash affected areas with copious quantities of water immediately. Remove ______________________________________________________________________________ /3 Page 3 of 4 MSDS : CHLOROFORM (continued) ________________________________________________________________________________ Skin (continued) : contaminated clothing and wash before re-use. Seek medical advice if affects persist. Inhaled : Remove victim to fresh air. If breathing laboured and patient cyanotic (blue), ensure airways are clear and have qualified person give oxygen through a face mask. If breathing has stopped apply artificial respiration at once. In the event of cardiac arrest, apply external cardiac massage. Seek urgent medical assistance. First Aid Facilities : Maintain eye wash and drench facilities in the work place. Advise to Doctor : Consult Poisons Information Centre Ph : 13 11 26 Do not administer catecholamines due to the cardiac effect caused by the product. Carcinogenicity Carcinogen Category 3 – Substance suspected of having carcinogenic potential – Work Safe Aust. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE Exposure Limits : 10 mg/m3 OES (Long-term, 8 hour TWA) Odour threshold is above TWA. Engineering Controls : Provide sufficient ventilation to ensure that the working environment is below the TWA. Where vapours or mists are generated, particularly in enclosed areas and natural ventilation is adequate, a flame proof exhaust ventilation system is required. Refer to AS 1940 – The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids and AS 2430 – Explosive gas atmospheres for further information concerning ventilation requirements. Personal Protection : Where ventilation is not adequate, respiratory protection may be required. Avoid breathing vapours or mists. Where mists or vapours exceed the exposure standards the use of the following is recommended : Approved respirator with organic vapour and dust/mist filters. Filter capacity and respirator type depends on exposure levels. Flammability : Non flammable. Will burn on prolonged exposure to flame or high temperature. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION Storage and Transport : Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated area and out of direct sunlight. Store away from strong bases, oxidizing agents, metals, ketone solvents and aluminium. Keep containers securely sealed. Dangerous Goods of Class 6 (Toxic and Infectious Substances) are compatible in a placard load with any of the following : Class 1, Class 3, if the Class 3 dangerous goods are nitromethane, Class 8, if the Class 6 dangerous goods are cyanides and the Class 8 dangerous goods are acids; and are incompatible with food packaging in any quantity. Spills and Disposal : Do NOT touch spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Provent entry into waterways, drains and confined areas. Absorb ______________________________________________________________________________ /4 Page 4 of 4 MSDS : CHLOROFORM (continued) ________________________________________________________________________________ with earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to container.
