Merging Academic & Moccasined Pathways: Supporting Native Students in Non-Indigenous Institutions of Higher Education A Native student affairs symposium sponsored by South Dakota State University’s American Indian Education & Cultural Center, Office of Diversity, Equity and Community, Department of Counseling and Human Development and in collaboration with NASPA’s Indigenous Peoples Knowledge Community This one-day conference welcomes all student affairs practitioners, students in higher education programs, faculty and professional staff, cultural diversity coordinators, tribal education leaders and professionals, and counselors to network with fellow colleagues and gain new insights from experienced Native American researchers, professionals, and practitioners. The conference theme, “Merging Academic and Moccasined Pathways: Supporting Native Students in Non-Indigenous Institutions of Higher Education,” challenges us to reflect on the cultural autonomy and political sovereignty of Native students, as it relates to their positionality as bicultural beings. Attendees will hear perspectives from practitioner-scholars who have confronted and examined critical questions such as: How do Native student affairs professionals understand their work as “bridging”? What are the implications when concepts of leadership, research and scholarship intersect with an embodied tribal epistemology? In what manner do Indigenous learning modalities work to inform a politic of diversity, inclusion and intercultural relations? By what means are processes of recovery, reclamation, and restoration critical to Native student development?
