Summer Reading List

Summer Reading List
Rising 9th Grade
This is required for the honors class, and optional for on-level class.
Directions (read carefully):
1. Choose any two books from the following list of books.
2. Once you have completed each novel, type 5 original guided questions that highlight some important p
oints
in the novels you read- 5 questions for each novel with answers and page numbers for the answers. The
types of questions that I am looking for are questions that start with why, how, what, explain and describeunacceptable questions are questions like "What color is the main character's hair in chapter 5?" I am look
ing
for something deeper, that points out some issue that is important to what is happening in the novel. An
example of a good guided question would be- "Explain why the narrator at the beginning of the novel is u
pset
with his mom? Is the narrator's anger fair?" The 5 questions should come from various points in the story
and
not just questions having to do with the first half or first chapter of the book but the whole book.
3. One discussion question for each novel- a question similar to the guided questions above in its set-up b
ut
that highlights some issue that is important to the novel as a whole with the answer backed up by specifi
c
evidence and page numbers. You essentially want a question that would get the class talking about a big
issue in the novel.
4. Identify the main conflict in the novel in one sentence.
5. This assignment must be typed with an MLA heading and the name of the book as the title.
6. Please remember your plagiarism rules and understand that my expectations are that all work passed in
will
be the original work and ideas of the student.
*DUE DATE = First day of class.
