Reconstructed in 1996, the Band Stand echoes the look
and feel of the original two-story structure. Construction
was made possible by donations and the hard work of the
Clifton Springs Rotary Club. It was dedicated in honor of

Foster Cottage, built by Henry Foster in 1854 is now the home
of the Clifton Springs Museum and Historical Society.
First built for Foster’s mother, the residence would become
the home of Foster and his wife Mary in 1872. Several later
superintendents of the Sanitarium would also call Foster
Cottage their home. In 1979, the cottage was placed on the
National Register of Historic Places.N 42.57.684 W 077.08.259

On July 6, 1877, the YMCA of Clifton Springs was
organized. At that time, it was the smallest community in
the US to have a chapter of the YMCA. In 1879, Dr. Foster
had the current two-story brick building erected adjacent
to the Foster Block. The ground floor housed the Peirce
Free Library, a parlor, and rooms for games. The upstairs
featured a meeting hall for 300 people. Today, the Clifton
Springs YMCA offers athletic and social programming to
children and adults. N 42.57.710 W 077.08.296

Known in its heyday as The San, The Sanitarium
Building was completed in 1896. Motivated by
advances in medical practices and growth in patient
volume, Dr. Foster commissioned this ‘fireproof’ building in 1892. During the early twentieth century it would
grow to become a full-service hospital. In 1972, upon the
completion of the Hospital & Clinic we know today, The
San was converted into The Spa Apartments.

Comfort Tiffany, the son of Charles Lewis
3A Louis
Tiffany who founded Tiffany’s jewelry studios in
Manhattan, is responsible for the “favrile” glass mosaic
that hangs in the chapel of the Sanitarium Building,
otherwise known as The Spa Apartments. Favrile glass
is an iridescent glass with rich colors from deep blue to
purple and from green to yellow-gold which resembles
the colors in a peacock or the wing-covers of some
beetles. Leonardo Da Vinci did the original painting of
the Last Supper, but the rendition in the Spa Apartments
Chapel is a copy of the painting done by the American
Artist, Frederic Wilson, which is a more gentle, quiet
version of Christ and his disciples.

John Brown Park, named after a local Rotarian,
school teacher, and visionary for the Clifton Springs
park system is home to the Peirce Pavilion II. Constructed
in 1991, this pavilion was built to recall the 1880 structure
built by Andrew Peirce as a Thank You to Dr. Foster for his
care of Peirce’s wife, Mary. The original pavilion, across
Main Street from the Sanitarium, served as a village center
and a place for visitors to taste the famous sulphur springs
water. N 42.57.805 W 077.08.119
The United Methodist Church was built in 1868 and

expanded in 1882 to include kitchen facilities and

much of the help to build the church came from Dr. Foster.
A daycare center was added to the property in 2003.

founding in 1850 by Dr.

The United Methodist Church was built in 1868 and
13
expanded in 1882 to include kitchen facilities and
classroom space. As is the case with most local churches,
much of the help to build the church came from Dr. Foster.
A daycare center was added to the property in 2003.

Building the
present Clifton Springs
Hospital & Clinic was
built in 1972. It is a testament to the vision of its
founding in 1850 by Dr.
Henry Foster. His personal
belief in holistic medicine
has grown over the years
into the present modern
hospital and specialty
medical center. Services include the Springs Integrative
Medicine Center where visitors can receive mineral
baths, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy,
herbal and other naturopathic services in addition to
conventional medical care. N 42.57.600 W 077.08.229

Clifton Springs began thriving in the midnineteenth century sparked by Dr. Henry
Foster's dedication to the "Water Cure" and the
community. Thankfully, our village is thriving in
the twenty-first century as well. Experience an
enchanting mix of innovation and preservation
spanning three centuries. Shop, dine, stroll, and
explore in every season.
