[email protected] +2348033598541 OMO BIOSPHERE RESERVE Omo Strict Nature Reserve in southwest Nigeria is accorded the status of a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve (USAID, 2008). What are Biosphere Reserves? Biosphere reserves are reported areas of terrestrial and coastal/marine ecosystems or a combination thereof which are internationally recognized within the framework of UNESCO’s Programme on Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Biosphere Reserves are not government structures or entities. They typically include land of which parts are owned and managed by governments, and other parts owned by industry, private citizens and institutions, all of whom have voluntarily cooperated for a common Ecotourism in Biosphere Reserve can be an excellent way of educating people about global change or changes in the local Nature and the environment over time. At the same time extreme care must be taken to ensure that tourism activities do not disrupt the irreplaceable role of Biosphere Reserves as long-term ecological benchmarks and monitors.
