New Student Checklist for Fall 2016

New Student Checklist for Fall 2016
☐ Activate your UR Self-Service account. Go to www.uregina.ca and click UR Self-Service at the top of the
page. Your USER ID is your U of R student number and your PIN is your birthdate in DDMMYY format. You
will be prompted to change your pin and add a security question. Problems? Call the IT Help Desk at
306.585.4685.
☐ Set-up your Email Account. All U of R email communication will be sent to your @uregina.ca email
address assigned when you are admitted. Go to www.uregina.ca and click Webmail at the top of the page.
Select the Quick Link for Find Your Username and Password and then complete your login. Remember to
check this account regularly or even better, forward it to your personal email account.
☐ Meet with your Luther Academic Advisor. We can help you choose the courses that best meet your
program requirements. If you aren’t sure what degree or program to follow, we’ll help you with that too. We
recommend that you meet with your Luther advisor at least once each year.
☐ Register for courses at your advising appointment, or online at UR Self-Service on your assigned day to
register. You may also leave your registration plan with Luther’s Academic Office to be processed on your
registration day.
☐ Register for ARTS 099 if in Luther Arts or MAP 001 if in Luther Media, Art, and Performance. These are
required courses for first semester students and include online components. ARTS 099 must be completed and
passed before you may register for your second semester courses.
☐ Apply online for Luther Scholarships by May 15 at www.luthercollege.edu/awards. We’ll share our
decision by July 1.
☐ Did you take IB or AP courses? Discuss the possibility of transfer credit with your Luther advisor.
Arrange for official transcripts to be sent to the U of R Admissions Office.
☐ Apply to Luther Residence online at www.luthercollege.edu/residence. Call 306.585.5333 or
1.800.LUTHERU for details or to arrange a tour. Check other campus residences at
www.uregina.ca/student/residence/.
☐ Apply for Student Loans. Saskatchewan residents should contact Saskatchewan Learning at
http://www.saskatchewan.ca/residents/education-and-learning/student-loans for details or call 306.787.5620
(Toll-Free: 1.800.597.8278). Apply online after June 1. If you are from another province, contact your provincial
student loans office for details. Remember, if you add or drop a course during the semester, your loan could be
affected.
☐ Register at the Centre for Student Accessibility. This office serves students with special needs (learning
disabilities, medical conditions, etc.). To register with the CSA, call 306.585.4631 or go to Riddell Centre 251 to
book an appointment. Check www.uregina.ca/student/accessibility/ for more details.
☐ Get your Student ID Card at the U of R Registrar’s Office, Ad-Hum 210 (Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. – 4:15
p.m.) after you have registered for classes. Bring one piece of valid government-issued photo I.D. A student ID
card is required to borrow library materials, use the fitness centre, receive student discounts, write exams,
and gain access to some campus events.
☐ Register for Orientation.
-Luther University Preparation Program (UPrep) is Luther’s four-day (Sept 1-4) introduction to university
skill-building academic activities and social events. Register at www.luthercollege.edu/uprep. Seats are limited
so register by June 30 to qualify for the early bird prize draw!
-The U of R Orientation is September 6 and is a shorter introduction to Luther and other campus supports.
www.uregina.ca/orientation/index.html
☐ Arrange for transportation. The University automatically adds a related fee to your account for a U-Pass.
The U-Pass is a new bus transportation service that offers students unlimited transit use for $87.60 per
semester. Students who live outside city limits or within one kilometer of the main campus may opt out.
http://ursu.ca/. If you are bringing a car on campus, please purchase your student parking pass early as they
sell out quickly.
☐ Buy your textbooks. Texts are available for purchase mid-August. View your list online at UR Self-Service.
Buy texts at the U of R Bookstore in College West or at the Student Union’s used bookstore in late August.
☐ Know important university dates. Semester dates, deadlines for adding and dropping courses, and fee
payment are found in the University Calendar (p. 3), on UR Self Service under My Refund Schedule, and at
www.uregina.ca/student/registrar/registration/academic-schedule.html. It is your responsibility to know these
dates.
☐ Pay your fees by October 4. You can pay in person at Luther’s Student Services Office (LC 110), through
internet banking, or on UR Self-Service with a credit card. For questions related to your tuition payments, call
our Financial and Residence Services Office at 306.585.5333.
☐ Setting Up Financial Proxy Payments: The University will not disclose your personal information. If you
wish to authorize a third party to access your financial information and make payments on your account, you
can set this up in UR Self Service. Go to Student Records, View Account or Make a Payment, then Authorized
Users to set up your proxy.
☐ Online Courses. If you take an online course, you can access the course materials on UR Courses at
urcourses.uregina.ca. UR Courses is an online learning environment. Login using uregina.ca username and
password, the same credentials used to access your uregina.ca e-mail. Access to your course begins on the first
day of the semester. If the semester has already begun when you register, the course will be available to you 24
hours after enrolment.
☐ Dropping Courses. Not attending isn’t enough! If you have registered in classes and later decide not to
attend, you must formally withdraw from your courses prior to the drop deadlines to avoid financial charges
and possible failing grades. Check the deadlines beforehand at “My Refund Schedule” in UR Self-Service.
☐ Health and Dental Plan. All U of R students registered in 9 credits for Fall are automatically registered for
this coverage. The cost is approximately $200 and is added to your Fall fees. If you are covered under another
plan you must opt out between September 9 - October 6, 2016. Contact the Member Services Centre to chat
online, visit ihaveaplan.ca, or call 1.866.358.4432.
General Academic Information
GPA: Grade point average. The University calculates several types of GPA:
TGPA: Term GPA – average of your grades in a semester
PGPA: Program GPA – average of grades for all courses in a degree program (usually 40 courses).
UGPA: Undergraduate GPA – average of all courses taken at U of R
Major or minor GPA: average of all courses comprising the major or minor.
Graduation Requirements: Know the GPA needed for your degree, major and minor (optional). Check the
relevant section of the undergraduate calendar:
Arts programs: Section 9.6.2.2. (p. 75)
Science programs: Section 16.6 (p. 234)
Media, Art, and Performance programs: Section 14.6.2 (p. 198)
Pre-professional programs: Section 20 (p. 296)
Degree Requirements: You will normally follow the degree requirements in effect the year you begin your
degree, as outlined in that year’s undergraduate calendar. If degree requirements change you can continue
with your original program, or move to the new program. If you change faculties, you must use the degree
requirements in effect when you transfer.
Dean’s Honour Roll: Students with a term GPA of 85% or higher are recognized for their excellent
achievements with a notation on the transcript. Luther also holds a special reception for you.
Repeating Courses: You may repeat a course once, and may repeat English 100 twice. If you repeat a course
the second grade is used to calculate your GPA. Grades are never deleted from your transcript.
Academic Probation: If your GPA is lower than 60% after completing 9 hours (3 courses), you will be placed
on academic probation. You may continue but you must work with an academic advisor and take fewer
courses each semester, and must improve grades within a specified time. (p. 41)
Compassionate or Medical Withdrawal: In the event of serious medical or other issue, you can request a
withdrawal from one or more courses. Please contact the Luther Academic Office to arrange a meeting with
the Assistant Dean.
Deferral: In the event of serious medical or other issue, you can request a deferral of a final exam or term
work. Please contact the Luther Academic Office to arrange a meeting with the Assistant Dean.
