9:00 am – 4:00 pm Educating Community College Librarians Nora Bird & Mike Crumpton
Community colleges have a renewed emphasis in recent years because of the stormy economy as well as presidential attention directed toward community colleges as part of the solution for retraining the workforce. The research looks at diverse and unique competencies needed of the community college librarians and staff. The workshop will address many of the elements identified as skills needed but not always taught, for working in a community college. Participants will come away with a broader view of the multiple skills needed and some resources on how to achieve greater efficiency. Thanks to NCLA Conference Exhibitors

This program uses a study undertaken in Wake County to better understand the funding streams necessary to maintain and enhance collection sizes. Results include examination of funding changes, book loss rates, deselection, and shelving capacity. Initiated in 2007, "the book study" has become a vital tool in planning Capital Improvement Projects and in understanding the long term effects of budget reduction. It is a model in use to calculate the necessary materials budget to maintain the collection for the upcoming 7 years.
