Focusing on mental health! New
Dr. Sandy Magnuson, Licensed Professional Counselor
The notion of mental health
receives extensive attention in
popular literature, film, news, and
even legislation. Yet, the content
of the information associated
with mental health is often about
mental illness – the absence of
mental health. Nonetheless, the
presence of mental health can
be acquired and experienced
by people of all ages; though it
manifests differently at various life
stages. Men and women who are in
the later decades of life experience
multiple challenges that can erode
mental health. At the same time,
they have resources, experience,
perspective, and maturity that may
not be available to their younger
counterparts.
Mental health encompasses wellbeing in several life dimensions,
including
emotional,
social,
spiritual, and physical. Mentally
healthy individuals have meaning
and purpose. Their faith is strong;
their behavior is consistent with
their spiritual beliefs. They have
close friends and relationships with
family members.
That does not mean that people
with mental health escape life’s
challenges. Quite the opposite.
They encounter stressors and
adversity. They feel sad. Sometimes
they
worry.
They
become
discouraged.
Nor
does
mental
health
preclude loss, which becomes a
constant companion to seniors.
Friends and loved ones pass away
or move. Agility and strength
diminish. Physical health declines.
Dependence on others increases.
Those are times when mentally
healthy seniors draw on their
resources to manage stress and
solve problems. They endure pain,
sadness, and loneliness. They
grieve, and achieve resolution
– finding new ways to achieve
contentment, companionship, and
peace.
How do they do that?
• They maintain physical health –
to the extent possible – with rest,
diet, exercise, and medical care.
• They generously give and accept
compliments.
• The spend time with friends.
• They give and accept support.
• They find ways to assure their
lives have meaning and purpose
– regardless of their age and
circumstances.
• The rely on their faith and their
faith communities.
• They focus on what they can do
despite their limitations.
• They laugh. They cry.
They smile.
• They grow older with courage
and grace.
• They provide wonderful
examples!
