Dear Danebo Families,
I hope you enjoyed your two week break and that students are
ready to return to school routines. We have several weeks of
learning opportunities continuing until June and our staff has great
things planned for our students. Danebo Staff are consistently
working to ensure students have the essential skills necessary to
be successful high school graduates, prepared for college or career readiness. Thank you for partnering with our teachers and
ensuring that your child is at school every day so that we can prepare them for their great future!
Thanks to Perry Tendick, Store Director at the Albertsons on
Royal, Danebo has the opportunity to raise awareness of the upcoming plastic bag ban in Eugene (starting May 1st) and earn some
valuable prizes for our school. Here’s how it works: Between
March 18th and April 19th, bring your plastic bags (from any
store) to either Danebo or Albertsons on Royal. Bags will be
weighed weekly and the schools with the highest bag weight at the
end of the contest (April 19th) will win prizes. There is a collection bin in the Danebo office, so thanks for your help with this!
Welcome back to Mrs. Yarbro, who is returning from Infant Care
Leave. She had the chance to spend some amazing time with her
sweet little one (Penelope) and will return to teaching music at
Danebo on Tuesday, April 9th.
Our PTO is gearing up for a spring fundraiser (first aid kits, recyclable shopping bags and flower bulbs) as well as for our Danebo
Celebration (May 17th). If you are able to assist in any way for
either of these events, please contact our office and we’ll get you
in touch with the correct PTO folks.
Thanks for staying in touch with our school. I look forward to
seeing you at our spring events.
Fondly,

BAG COLLECTION
COMPETITION IS ON!!!
Bring in your grocery bags for a
chance to win a prize for our
school—now thru April 16th!
Thank you!
We would like to thank all of our beloved volunteers who serve in so many valuable ways at
Danebo. From classroom to classroom…to our
Danebo PTO events, SMART...to working in
the classroom: VOLUNTEERS MAKE IT HAPPEN!!
We will be honoring all volunteers at a volunteer appreciation lunch/dessert during the
week of April 22nd-26th, to celebrate your contribution to the Danebo community. Invitations and more information will be coming
your way after our Spring Break.
If you volunteer at Danebo, THANK YOU for all
you do for our community!!! You truly do make
a difference for us all.
Does your child have a desire to participate in
KidSports? Danebo has been adopted by an
anonymous donor for the KidSports Adopt-ASchool program. Our school has been given a limited number of vouchers that will reduce the
price of sports registration. If you are facing
financial hardship and are on our free/reduced
lunch program, please contact the front office
to request a voucher. First-time users of vouchers will be considered before repeat requests.
My Staff Interview with Mr. Henningsgaard
By, Alicia DuChateau, 5th grade student reporter
A.D.: What do you do at Danebo? Do you enjoy it?
How many years have you worked here?
Mr. H: I teach the third through fifth grade Extended Resource room. I enjoy it a lot and have
been working here for eight years.
A.D.: What would you do if you didn’t work here?
Mr. H: I would be a D.J.
A.D.: When is your birthday?
Mr. H: My birthday is March 26, 1970. I was
born in St. Paul, MN.
A.D.: Are you married?
Mr. H: No, but I used to be married .
A.D.: Do you have any children? If so, what are their
names?
Mr. H: Yes, one boy named Zach
and he is 19 years old.
A.D.: Do you have any pets?
Mr. H: I have one cat. She is 12
years old and named Nellie.
A.D.: What are your hobbies?
Mr. Henningsgaard
Mr. H: I like playing guitar,
reading, riding my bike, and listening to music.
Chicken Bones!!
WHO??!! The fourth and fifth graders, and guess
what…they did an experiment on chicken bones!
The experiment was to see which solutions will
make the chicken bone rubbery. The solution
could be a liquid such as sodas, pickle juice and
vinegar. Each student brought in their choice of
solution that they soaked a chicken finger, wait…
I mean chicken bone in, for the two weeks over
spring break!
Once every student brought in their solution(s)
we started the experiment. Do you know
why we couldn’t start the experiment at
different times? Well, because we wouldn’t actually have known what made the
bone rubbery if we started at different
times. Our bones had to soak at the same time so
we could know which really worked. All students
were very excited for this event.
At the time of the writing of this article, we didn’t know what solution would make the bone rubbery, but maybe now you can ask your 4th or 5th
grade child which solution worked.
Written by Ashlee Walker, 5th grade
student reporter from Mr. Smith’s
A.D.: What is your favorite book? What book have
you most recently read?
Mr. H: I like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and I
am reading Lobotomy: Surviving the Ramones,
by DeeDee Ramone
A.D.: What is your favorite thing to do in the summer
and winter?
Mr. H: In the summer I like to swim and ride my
bike, and in the winter I like to read.
(Editor’s note: Mr. H frequently shares his great guitarplaying talents with the Danebo family at our VIP assemblies each month. Everyone always loves and appreciates his music. Thanks Mr. H!!!!)
LOST AND FOUND!
Parents, if your student is
missing a clothing item, there’s a
good chance it’s in our lost and
found bin located
at the south
entrance of our
cafeteria. Stop
by the office for a
visitor badge
and check it out.
THANK YOU!
Danebo PTO Meeting

Spring Fundraiser
Sales of spring bulbs, first aid kits and reusable bags.
Sale runs from April 9th through April 23rd and we will provide prizes to all students who participate,
the top 3 sellers and the class with the most participation will receive a pizza party.
School Garden
Peas have been planted (thanks to Mrs. Healey’s class).
Garlic is coming up as are some flowers
Garden club is meeting on Saturdays at 1:00 in the garden
All families are invited to come, please, and all families who help in the garden can take home any produce that comes up.
Joanne was appointed to the Eugene Sustainability Commission (congratulations, Joanne) and will need
some help managing the school garden next school year. More to come on that…
Danebo Celebration, May 17th
Theme is “Around the World”, with quads doing activities from around the world.
Kids would have passports and get a stamp at each activity. Passports could be shown at the end of
the evening for a prize.
Activities in the quads will be free (no tickets) with the exception of the Garden activity and maybe
“Wacky-tacky hair”.
Tickets will be sold for the basket raffles, staff raffle items and food items (popcorn, cookies, snow
cones, cotton candy).
Idea to have the option to purchase tickets for raffles/food with Boxtops for Education.
Staff will need to decide which country their quad is representing as well as what their basket theme
is.
Financial update
Current PTO balance is $6453.99 (with some of that allocated for field trips and assemblies).
Requests: Mago Gilson requested $100 to purchase journals for students in ELD to use for
writing activities (approved).
NEXT PTO MEETING WILL BE HELD ON APRIL 16TH AT 6:30 PM.
Homework passes will be given for your student(s), snacks and childcare provided!
PLEASE JOIN US!

DANEBO SCHOOL GARDEN CLUB
Did you know Danebo
has a garden and
that we could use
your help???
Every Saturday from 1:00-2:00pm the Danebo
school Garden Club will meet in the garden on the
north side of the building. Anyone who is interested can come help tend it. This is a great opportunity for kids and adults to get some handson gardening experience, share their knowledge
and beautify the school. Everyone who volunteers their time in the
garden is welcome to
partake in the fresh,
organic food that is produced there.
The school garden also
serves as an educational
tool for teachers to do hands-on lessons with
their students throughout the year. Kids love to
go outside, and the school garden is a place
where they can learn about bugs, plant some
peas, get inspiration for creative writing, and use
math concepts to plan a garden bed. Without
the help of parent and staff volunteers, however, this great resource will not be available
to the school.
If you would like to come help, please come prepared to work in the dirt. All children need to be
accompanied by an adult, and be warned: the
school is locked up on the weekends, so there is
no restroom access.

OBOB 2013 WRAP-UP
Our team had a great time at the Regional competition
this year. The Return of the Novel Readers gained 51
points in two Battles, it was just not enough to advance to the next round. There were 54 teams that
competed and it was the top 18 teams that moved on.
The team plans to try again next year.
Thanks again to all of the volunteers that helped support OBOB this year. It couldn’t have been done
without you: Janet Bertucci, Jeanne Haslip, Crystal
Strege, Jean Kozlowski, Teresa Ballantyne, Joann
Gross, Kevin Smith, Deanna Flick, and Laurie Aley.
Lastly, thanks to all of our supportive parents for
helping students to participate and encouraging kids
to read, read, read.
Thanks,
Mrs. Gregory
KEEP ON READING!!!!
HEALTH ROOM NEEDS CLOTHING
If you are doing any spring cleaning,
our health room would love to receive
gently-used shoes sizes 1-3 to fit older
kids at Danebo and clothing, including
sweats and shorts, sizes 8-12. Any
contribution is helpful for those
times when spills or “accidents”
happen. We would be grateful to
receive your contribution! Thank
