Nokia has gone and done it again. The phone company has recently
launched a range of affordable smartphones into the ‘X’ family tree.
We take a look at the colourful Nokia XL model to see if this new device
can hold its own in the fast-growing and competitive mobile market…
INTRODUCTION
Nokia is undoubtedly one of the forefathers of the
modern phone industry, renowned for the sturdy build
quality of its devices, yet it seems that the Finnish
firm wasn’t quite prepared when the colossal wave
of smartphones hit the market and demand for such
devices surged to an all-time high. Thankfully, Nokia
has married with Microsoft and the Windows Phone to
launch not one, but three Android devices into the ‘X’
family, and the Nokia XL is the daddy of them all.
DESIGN & DISPLAY
Consistently recognised for its handset quality and
design, the Nokia XL follows suit with a fresh, tilebased user interface inspired by the Lumia family. You
might, however, expect a phone of phablet proportions
(especially when it’s called the XL), but even though
this is the largest version of the Nokia X line, it sports
a 5-inch display – reasonable by today’s standards –
measuring slightly wider than its family members, the
Nokia X and X+. It’s almost comfortable to operate in

it’s the turn of the new product ranges

There is something for every

begin to make your

the home, but something we can often
neglect in our furniture and decor choices.
Pottery Barn have brought socialising
back to the forefront with long tables
that allow you to have extra dinner guests
and alfresco-inspired dining utensils
that make it seem only natural to host
a full house! As well as being beautiful,
all the furniture is refreshing. It’s taken
inspiration from traditional pieces from
around the world – meaning you won’t
see any chrome on black which can make
homes look cold.
Instead you’re filling your nest with
warmth, not only due to the brown
and tan colour choices, but also with
the woodwork that is so prominent
throughout the new lines of furniture something that we’re glad to see.
The level of craftsmanship is clearly
high too, something that Pottery Barn
pride themselves on, with thick wooden
bed frames and Spanish themed tables.
It’s a world apart from clean-cut Ikea
furniture that graces most modern homes,
and that’s why we adore the collections they’re homely, cosy and built to last.
If you’re a fan of entertaining,
traditional furniture with a stylish twist,
and comfort to the fullest, then Pottery
Barn ticks all the right boxes to prepare
your home for the perfect super snug
autumn evenings.

Swedish Chef Bengt has been in Bahrain
about a year, since the pre-opening phase
and start up phase of the hotel. Trained in
classic French food, he has worked around
Europe and Dubai. His sommelier training
helped him a lot to understand flavours
and how they all work together (it was no
wonder that we were feeling extremely
privileged and excited about the whole
tasting!)
The restaurant itself, located on the 34th
floor, overlooks the open sea and provides a
magnificent view of the entire city.
We began with tasting two starters
(lucky us) – the first was a vegetarian starter,
a take on the classic French salad (normally
a quiche or a pie with onions). This however,
had a puff pastry base, topped with marinated
red onions, frisse, shaved goats cheese, semidried tomatoes, olives and different herbs. It
was extremely fresh and light – a perfect blend
of savoury and sweet flavours.
“We find dried or sundried tomatoes
are too hard, so we do it ourselves,” Chef
Bengt explains.
The second starter was pan seared
scallops on fennel and citrus salad. The
scallops were cooked to perfection and we
couldn’t get enough of the beurre blanc and
lemon foam that went with the dish.
“We try and use a lot of citrus this
time of year since it’s in season and it breaks
nicely with the other components of the
dish,” he tells us.
“To me the philosophy around food
is the less the chefs do the better, so you
need a very good product to start with. We
import most of the vegetables from Spain,
seafood from France, and let the flavours
talk for themselves.”
Next up on the menu was the main
course of rack of lamb, herb crusted with
herbes de Provence mixture (rosemary,
thyme, tarragon, parsley and a touch of
Dijon mustard), served over finely cut
ratatouille (courgette, aubergine, bell peppers
and tomato sauce). The meat was so tender
it melted in your mouth. It came with a tian
of potatoes (thinly sliced potatoes) baked in
butter and stock (to die for), with tomatoes
and rosemary jus to go with it.
We were then treated to one of the
most delicate desserts - citrus mosaic served
with mandarin sorbet and vanilla quenelle. It
was the perfect finish to a great meal (even
for some of us who don’t have a sweet tooth)
as it cleansed the palate beautifully.
The restaurant niches itself as serving
food from south of France, which is a little
bit lighter than the traditional French fayre.
“I enjoy working with seafood and
vegetables because you need to be very
precise and it’s a way for the chef to show
off his skills. I also enjoy eating this food.
Coming to Bahrain has been very nice as
the seafood, especially the local prawns, is
amazing,” he says.
The restaurants experiment with
cooking techniques and are kitted out with
the latest technologies and fancy machines
and everything is done in-house (slow
cooking, water baths etc).
“We implement molecular gastronomy
in our day to day cooking. We don’t do it
to showcase where it’s applicable, we do it
to enhance the flavours. We don’t want to
show off; we want to use the advantages it
gives us.
“It’s how you eat in France - it’s not just
the food; it’s your friends, the occasion, the
experience of the whole meal itself.”
This philosophy and Chef Bengt’s
passion for true French cuisine has us
convinced that we will definitely be coming
back for more!

Naturally artistic by nature, Zahra Ali’s talents go far and beyond the normal helm of
sketching, painting and poetry. One of the few self taught local artists, her sand drawings
will have you mesmerised from the very first few strokes. It beggars belief to see the
transformation of sand from 2D portraits to 3D scenes. FACT caught up with this
young artist to find out more about her and her unique art.

hen we first met Zahra, we were pleasantly
surprised to see a sweet down to earth girl,
who is also exceptionally talented. You
will be stunned (just as much as we were)
to know that Zahra started sand painting,
when she was in Jordan studying aircraft
engineering (aviation, communication and
instruments!)
“I liked this art and in my part time I
would draw pictures by sand on the floor,”
she says. “I’m self-taught and have had no
professional training. I’ve been doing it for
a year and a half. When I was studying, I
didn’t have a lot of time to draw (maybe
an hour), but now that I have finished my
studies and while I’m looking for a job, I’m
doing this part time. I want to do something
professional, but this will always be my
hobby.”
Zahra’s style of drawing varies from
portraits to sceneries.
Talking about where she got her
inspiration from, she says “I liked the work
of a sand artist from Ukraine – Kseniya
Simonova (winner of Ukraine’s Got
Talent). I learnt this by watching her videos
Get your five-a-day now as the Bahraini
Farmers Market is back for those looking
to boost their health, save some dinars,
and support the local economy…
“ I was searching for sand
animation and how to draw it, but
there were no lessons available.
So, I watched the videos and
learnt by following her hand
movements.”
She speaks enthusiastically about her
aspirations for the future. “I want to use this
art in my profession. I want to tell a story
with sand painting and make advertising
videos about aircrafts, and the correct way
to use aircrafts. I want to make a safety
video by sand painting and to show the
importance of airplanes by drawing.”
With great vision in mind, Zahra is
optimistic about her future. We haven’t seen
the end of her; on the contrary, it’s just the
beginning for this bright young lady. We
wish her all the very best for the future and
to keep the sand flowing!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away - so
the saying goes! But, we all know that in
most of Bahrain’s major supermarkets,
fruit and vegetable is quite overpriced
(BD3 for Iceberg lettuce – what?!).
Whether it’s because the big supermarkets
charge a premium, as many like to do
their shopping in one place rather than
roam the island for one item at a time, or
because of the import charges – the further
oranges (and any other food for that
matter!) travels, the more expensive it gets.
So, we hear you ask, how do you keep
stocked up on fresh fruit and veg for that
all-important healthy lifestyle? Simple.
The Bahraini Farmers Market! It’s a great
on YouTube. I was searching for sand

Zahra uses a special sand to create all
her drawings. She explains why the sand
used is so important. “I get the sand from
Saudi Arabia. It’s soft and doesn’t clump up
when wet. The desert sand is not the same.
There are different qualities - some artists
use sea sand, but I don’t like it because the
sand particles are big, and the one that I use
is very fine.”
It is amazing to see that a painting
takes Zahra only about 15 minutes to make
and some as less as two to five minutes.
Some of Zahra’s work has been
exhibited on Bahrain TV, Hala Bahrain
Show, at National Day in Budaiya, in the
UAE and in Jordan (where she drew the
logo of her college).
She is also an avid sketcher. “My
favourite paintings are my charcoal and
