Monroe Doctrine, 1823
The President of the United States, James Monroe, warned European
nations not to interfere in the Western Hemisphere.
The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, 1904
Eighty-one years later, the 26th president of the United States,
Theodore Roosevelt, extended the Monroe Doctrine with a corollary.
It stated:
1. It is the right of the United States to intervene in the economic
affairs of any nation in the Americas that cannot manage them.
2. It is the right of the United States to exercise international police
power.
3. Advocates “Big Stick Policy”.
