Year 5 Homework – Autumn Term 2016 Please find below our homework menu for the autumn term. You should aim to complete a Literacy and a Numeracy activity every week and it is best to complete these in the order given to ensure the activity matches what is taught in lessons. Books will be collected once a week, on a Tuesday, marked and returned by Thursday. If you need more help, please ask your teacher to explain the activity further. If you are struggling to complete your homework then sign up for Homework Club, this will be available every Tuesday. Most of the activities can be adapted to make them more or less challenging as appropriate. If there is any feedback, the Home-School Journal is the best way to do this. Literacy (Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo & Churchill & Hitler Biographies) Remember to read for 20 minutes every day Synonyms – Two words are synonyms if they are very similar or the same in meaning. Find 8 examples for each word that form the title of the book we are studying in English at the moment. Friend – Foe - Character study – Write a fact file about what we know already about David or Tucky from Friend or Foe. You could include a picture of what you think they look like and whether you would like to be their friend. Include personality traits, appearance, hobbies, fears and emotions about the war. Morpurgo interview – If you could meet Michael Morpurgo (the author of Friend or Foe) what would you want to ask him about this book? Write down 5 questions you would want to ask, they must be about the story so far that we have been studying in class. Biography – Write a biography about someone in your family, a friend or a celebrity. Include a starting statement to say what this person has achieved and then write in chronological order. Try using subheadings to give details of different parts of their life. Extension: Include quotes from the person you are writing about. Use quotation marks. Direct and Reported speech – Make a list of things someone might say about Churchill. Write 4 sentences that use reported speech and 4 that use direct speech. E.g. Reported: Henry explained that Churchill was an important man during the war. Direct: “Churchill is a heroic figure, he made lots of great speeches,” Abigail remarked. Connectives – Write 6 sentences that use these time connectives about your weekend. Afterwards, later on, after a while, beforehand, after some time, prior to. E.g. Prior to having breakfast, I woke up my brother and told him to get up. Remember to use commas if you need them. Contractions – Write 6 sentences that use a contraction and underline it in each sentence.E.g. My mum promised she’d help me with my homework. Maths Remember to practise your 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12 times tables so that you know them. Writing numbers – write a 7 digit number in your homework book. Underneath, complete these calculations using the number you wrote. E.g. 456,738.5 + 0.1 = 456,738.6 +0.1 +100 +1000 +10,000 + 1,000,000 -0.1 -100 -1000 -10,000 -1,000,000 Extension: Use 8 digits or numbers to 2 decimal places. Number sequences – write a sequence of 6 numbers with these rules. +2000 +25,000 -50 -0.5 X10 Extension: try some of your own rules to challenge yourself Factor Pairs – How many factor pairs can you find for these numbers? Here is an example of a factor pair for 12: 6 and 2 (6x2=12) 50 62 32 77 115 220 Extension: Try some larger numbers of your own. Fractions – Write these decimal numbers as fractions. 2 E.g. 17.2 = 17 10 0.5 0.75 0.1 0.25 0.2 Extension: Can you work out the percentage for each of these? Rounding numbers – Round these numbers to the nearest whole number: 1. 934.1 2. 5661.56 3. 42.6 4. 2488.31 5. 9.09 6. 6.008 Extension: Can you round these numbers to the nearest 10 and 100?
