There were 50 students who nominated for leadership and the quality of their speeches was excellent. The 2017 team will be: Pastoral Leaders: Jorja Ireland, Jordin Grant Clare Family Team Leaders: Abbey Lalor, Jack Rasmussen Rufino Family Team Leaders: Tess Flori, Jake Reus Agnes Family Team Leaders: Mia James, Aydn Singh Francis family Team Leaders: Ella Dwyer, Cooper Greenwood Congratulations to these students and, as I mentioned to the Year 6s, we expect all the Year 6s to be leaders in their precinct. Lions Youth of the Year Six of our senior students have been competing in the National Lions Youth of the Year competition. This competition looks at student’s leadership, cultural, sporting and public speaking skills. It is a very prestigious competition that has been running for over 25 years on the Gold Coast. Our students have been working hard since last year with Speech Coach Marie Roberts and we are seeing some outstanding results. Our students have been entered in 4 competitions and have won 3 Public Speaking awards and 1 overall award. Our participants have been: Ashmore conference: Carrara conference: Helensvale conference: Runaway Bay conference: Dylan Foxe Somha Sleeth (Public Speaking Award). Cameron Grant, Jasmine Rasmussen (Public Speaking and Overall Award). Stephanie Barber, Georgia Lambert (Public Speaking Award). These are outstanding results from our students in a quality public speaking/leadership competition. Well done to each of our competitors. Ash Wednesday Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday which signals the start of the season of Lent. Lent is a time of reflection and sacrifice for Catholics. During this season, we usually look to make a sacrifice and “give up” some pleasure, excess or habit in order to prepare ourselves for Easter. I would encourage all families to look at ways they, as a family, can prepare for the Easter season. Next Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, our students will be able to purchase pancakes which is the custom on the day before the beginning of Lent. Our Ash Wednesday liturgies will begin at 9.15 for Years 4-12 and the Prep-3 liturgy will commence at 12 midday. Swimming Carnivals It was very rewarding to see the level of participation at our swimming carnivals. A great feature of our carnivals is that students have the opportunity to swim at a competitive level or at a social, team participation focussed level. Many records were broken at the two carnivals. The points from the Yr 3-6 carnival and the MY/SY carnival were added together and the overall swimming champions were RUFINO!! Details of the carnival and subsequent District Swimming Squad are in the newsletter. page 2 Camps The Year 6 and 7 Camps were held last week and I have received very positive reports from the staff involved in regards to the student’s participation, attitude and behaviour on the camps. Thank you to all the staff who gave up time with their families to attend these camps. We have a generous and dedicated staff at Assisi who are aware of the importance of strong and respectful relationships in College life. Special thanks to Paula Dougherty for her organisation of the Year 7 Camp and to Ben Torenbeek and the Grade 6 teachers for their co-ordination of the Grade 6 camp. Borobi’s Visit On Monday BOROBI, the Commonwealth Games mascot, visited Assisi. Our EY/JY students were taught a dance by Borobi and he was certainly a big hit with the students. Assisi has been assigned Fiji as our partner competing nation for the Games. We are expecting to have further contact with Borobi and the Fiji team before the Games in 2018. March 3 One of our major community events for the year occurs next Friday. The afternoon is a chance for community members, new and existing, to enter the College and mix socially whilst their children enjoy the activities organised by the College. The afternoon begins with a Show and Share in the Early and Junior Years and when school concludes we begin the discos. EY- 3.45- 4.45pm: JY- 5.00pm- 6.00pm and MY/ SY – 6.30pm- 8.45pm. Family Team activities for EY/JY students will be available whilst the other students are at their disco. The P&F kindly operate a BBQ in Perugia for parents and staff and it is a good opportunity for new members of our community to meet other parents and staff. I would encourage all parents to attend the afternoon and mix socially with our welcoming community. Wakakirri Wakakirri will occur again this year and students interested in participating this year are invited, with their parents, to an information evening on Tuesday 28 February in Perugia. Pax et Bonum, Michael Laidler, on behalf of the Leadership Team page 3 Business Manager Car Park and Street Parking We often receive complaints from neighbours indicating parents are parking in streets around the school and blocking driveways or access to their homes. In addition we hear stories of people parking in our disabled and reserved car spots preventing legitimate pass holders from accessing these spots. We ask that all members of our community be vigilant and respectful to each other in ensuring the safe passage of students entering and leaving the school. English for Middle Years Middle Years Tutoring Middle Years English Tutoring English tutoring for middle years students takes place every Thursday morning before school in Cortona from 8.15 to 8.45 am. Debating Many students have indicated an interest in participating in the 2017 Debating season and we are currently in the process of forming and registering teams. Students will be attending the debating Summer School at Bond University on Saturday. Sue Waddingham English Co-ordinator page 4 Bumper Stickers Bumper Stickers for New Families Assisi bumper stickers are issued to all families. We ask all students and parents to proudly display this sticker on their family car. Each week our “Sticker Spotter” will pick four cars with stickers and announce these car’s registration numbers in our weekly newsletter. There will be a prize for these families when they notify Rachael Crotty in our office. Each student in the family will receive a tuckshop voucher for $5.00 from La Verna. New families to Assisi in 2017 can pick up your free sticker from Rachael from the beginning of Week 4 (Monday 13 February). If you would like a second sticker for your family or friends these are available for purchase from the Uniform Shop for $2 each. Good luck! page 6 Chiara iCentre ‘more than just a library - a learning centre of information, instruction, immersion, inquiry and innovation’ Chiara Crew 2017 “Chiara Crew” is a group of Yr 12 Leaders who dedicate some of their Big Break time EVERY WEEK to help make our library the wonderful place that it is. These students nominate themselves during term 4 of Yr 11 and then at the start of Yr 12 we have our final group. Chiara Crew also promote reading by speaking at assemblies, helping out at the Book Fairs and organising Book Week and Assisi Nova activities. These students were acknowledged for their fantastic commitment at the College Assembly last Friday by being presented with their badges from Mr Laidler and Ms Ball. We have a smaller group than usual this year – but it’s definitely quality over quantity. We applaud and thank these leaders for the service they provide to our school community. Tobias Alcott Jack Wright Hannah Baker Samantha Dee Georgia Schampers Georgia Lambert Book Fair –“Bookaneer” – Where Books Are The Treasure The Term 1 Scholastic Book Fair was held this week in the library. Thank you to all the families who supported it by purchasing a book. A reminder that we hold these fairs in Terms 1 and 4. During Terms 2 and 3, we run an online Book Club for students to buy books. A percentage of the sales goes into buying books for our own school library. This motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day is celebrated by millions of people in more than 100 countries. Assisi celebrated World Read Aloud Day by speaking to our students about reading aloud at home and by Ms Ball visiting some Middle Years classes to read some short stories to students.
