No 74 Edition NEWSLETTER Autumn 2017 MOTHOBI SESELI WELCOMED AS A MEMBER BY JACKIE BOOTH (TENNIS MANAGER) AND DANIE APPEL (GENERAL MANAGER) We are very excited about the current upgrade of our tennis facilities made possible by the generous sponsorship from ARGON ASSET MANAGEMENT company. We have to thank our Tennis Manager Jackie Booth who was instrumental in securing this sponsorship for Kelvin Grove. It also helps that Mothobi Seseli, CEO of ARGON ASSET MANAGEMENT is a great tennis enthusiast. The sponsorship enabled us to resurface courts 1-6 and in addition we are installing floodlights on courts 1-3, all to be completed by mid-March. This will be just in time for the prestigious ITF Young Seniors World Championships Tournament (19 March – 1 April) with Kelvin Grove as the main host for this tournament. EDITOR’S NOTE DEAR MEMBERS AND FUTURE MEMBERS Welcome to our 2017 autumn edition - we hope that you all had a wonderful festive season. Kelvin was host to some wonderful events over December and January, which were very successful, well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all. As we look forward to the cooler autumn season in Cape Town, with hot sunny days and warm, balmy nights which many people spend outdoors. The average temperature tends to be around 18 degrees Celsius during the day, you can easily enjoy scorching hot sunny days that are perfect for the beach. There may be some chilly days too of course. The summer winds drop down notably, and with the wet season a while away, this is a pleasantly mild time of year to explore the city and its surrounds. This time of the year is a great time to head to Kirstenbosch or Table Mountain for a relaxed walk or hike. Kirstenbosch showcases the autumn scenery beautifully, and with loads of paths to follow, you can enjoy anything from a gentle stroll to a more challenging hike. Table Mountain’s lower paths, especially on the Signal Hill side, are also fantastic at this time of the year. Other good walking spots include Silvermine Nature Reserve and Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve too (both on the False Bay side). Kelvin has plenty of fantastic events lined up for you over the cooler autumn season, from wine pairings, the Stormers annual dinner, gourmet dinners and new and exciting music evenings in the Terrace restaurant. It is better to book now to avoid any disappointment :). Thank you for all your continued support throughout 2016 and 2017 and may you continue to enjoy your time spent at your Club. Suggestions and comments are always welcome, please send them to [email protected]. Warm regards, KAYLEIGH BASSETT EDITOR WHEN WE TREAT PEOPLE MERELY AS THEY ARE, THEY WILL REMAIN AS THEY ARE. WHEN WE TREAT THEM AS IF THEY WERE WHAT THEY SHOULD BE, THEY WILL BECOME WHAT THEY SHOULD BE. - THOMAS S. MONSON 1 CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN A long hot and dry summer and the imposition of very stringent water restrictions is an unfortunate reality for all of us and whilst our Club is in the fortunate position of having a source of natural water, we can all play a part in conserving water as the collective impact of what may seem individually insignificant actions in our change rooms alone can have a huge effect. Our dams are in a desperate state and whereas the first winter rains have had a tradition of falling around the Easter weekend, unless our winter rains are substantial, stringent water restrictions are likely to prevail. The Club has enjoyed a busy summer season, a time when our facilities are traditionally well supported by members and their guests and, a very busy time for management and staff who do their best to ensure the member experience is seamless. Performance forecasts for the past year are encouraging and we look forward to concluding the Financial Year successfully. Improving the quality of our offerings and the Club experience for existing and new members is an ongoing but at times challenging objective with some diverse projects in the year ahead. Renovations to the ladies swimming pool change rooms have been completed, additions to the gymnasium and Pool Bar were approved at the Extraordinary General Meeting in November and construction will commence during March with minimal disruption to the existing facilities, improvements around the popular braai area and changes to the Terrace Lounge area are under consideration and plans for a minor extension to the Pavilion are at an advanced stage. As members will be aware, the proposal tabled at the last AGM motivating that the swimming pool could be effectively and economically heated was not supported at Extraordinary General Meeting. Annual subscriptions for 2017/2018 are due and members are encouraged to settle those accounts on or before 31 March. While your Committee have been able to limit the subscription increase, membership dues are perhaps an appropriate reminder of Club Rules as they apply to guests. When those rules are infringed, the member concerned is in effect compromising the Club`s value system but perhaps more importantly, grossly unfair to other paid up members when guests are by way of example using tennis courts, the swimming pool or squash courts on a very frequent and free basis. Our Club will be hosting an exciting tennis tournament in March that is likely to include some world class master`s talent from many different countries as well as a croquet tournament the details of which will be published on the Club`s notice boards and Web Page. We host the annual Chris Burger Petro Jackson fund raiser in early March, our monthly gourmet dinners continue to be well supported and on a completely different tack, we are considering a proposal to publish a book on Kelvin Grove`s history and hope that some of our members may have historic material that could be included in such a publication. We look forward enjoying your continued support during 2017. JON EAGAR CLUB CHAIRMAN 2 CLUB VALUES In this edition we are focusing on ‘Appreciation’ - how fitting, since we have just been through the festive season where we were reminded of our blessings and were able to celebrate with loved ones. APPRECIATION IS A WONDERFUL THING: IT MAKES WHAT IS EXCELLENT IN OTHERS BELONG TO US AS WELL. ― VOLTAIRE APPRECIATION We recognise, communicate and reward productivity, quality and effectiveness. IN OUR BEHAVIOUR WE • are courteous, i.e. use “please” and “thank you”, “good morning” when addressing others • tell staff when they do a good job in a sincere manner • demonstrate appreciation for the challenges within various roles 3 CHEF'S CHOICE ROTI RECIPE Members are always complimenting us on the roti we serve in the coffee shop and in the Terrace in winter when we offer our curry menu. There is nothing better than a fresh roti straight out of the pan. Don’t be restricted to serving this with curry, it can be just as good on the side of a summery mezze or antipasti style meal. MAKES 12 TO 15 ROTI • • • • • • • 700 ml flour 10 ml baking powder 5 ml salt 50 ml sunflower oil Water 200 g softened butter 50g extra butter for frying First measure out all of your ingredients. Sift your dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Add the oil and rub into the flour with your hands until you form fine breadcrumbs. Add water gradually while mixing it in, until a dough just forms. Knead the dough for a few minutes then cover and leave in a warm spot for about 15 minutes to rest. Next take pieces of the dough to form balls and roll each one out thinly on a floured surface. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on the discs. Roll them up to form a long sausage. Roll up each end of the sausage to form an s-shaped roll and then fold one side on top of the other. At this stage you can freeze them until you need them if you want to. Roll out each ball again to the desired thickness and fry in butter on moderate heat until golden brown and bubbles form. Be careful not to burn them. Turn over halfway to cook on the other side. If you like butter as much as I do then rub a little extra on after cooking. Serve immediately. 4 GUEST SPEAKERS GUEST SPEAKER: LOIS STRACHAN THURSDAY, 20 APRIL 2017 TIME: 12:00 FOR 12:30 Book Launch: “A Different Way of Seeing” – a blind woman’s journey of living an “ordinary” life in an extraordinary way. When Lois Strachan became blind at the age of 21 as a result of Type 1 (childhood onset) diabetes she realised she had a choice – to go home and give up and be angry, bitter, dependent and depressed for the rest of her life… or she could take back control of her destiny and actively choose to move forward as a blind person in a sighted world. As an inspirational speaker and author Lois is passionate about two things: • Helping people to see their own lives, and their challenges, in a different way • De-mystifying the abilities of those who are blind and low vision to facilitate increased integration into society and the workplace Lois is the author of “A Different Way of Seeing: A Blind Woman’s Journey of Living an ‘Ordinary’ Life in an Extraordinary Way, allowing readers to gain greater understanding of how Lois accomplishes simple, everyday tasks without sight, including personal stories to back up her explanations. She is also the author of the illustrated children’s series “the Adventures of Missy Mouse” which help children understand how blind people lead normal lives. In 2015 Lois was awarded the prestigious Tributes Excellence award, which honours women with disabilities who have excelled in their fields, in the category of education and literature. In the same year she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for Casual Day, South Africa’s largest fund-raiser for persons living with disabilities. Since losing her sight Lois has achieved a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English Literature and Classical Civilisations, and an Honours degree in Classical Civilisations from the University of KwaZulu Natal, a diploma in practitioner Coaching Skills, a Certificate in Human Resource Management from UNISA, and is a Distinguished Toastmaster. She has worked as an office manager in a marine engineering company, has been a singer/songwriter in a rock band, and has served as District Director of Toastmasters International (Southern Africa), a non-profit volunteer organisation focusing on communication and leadership development. During this time, she was also food editor of Die Burger and Femina, and won both the Mondi and Galliova awards for excellence in journalism. Ina had her own regular TV cookery slot and has to date written eight cookery books. She formulated a small range of gourmet dressings, sauces and seasonings on customer demand. The fortunes of the condiment business took a dramatic turn when the Paarman’s youngest son, Graham, joined the business in 1990. He expanded the product range, manufacturing facility and selling infrastructure. Thanks to these efforts, Ina Paarman has become a household name and one of the few living brand names. Ina will always be a teacher at heart and she and her team take great pride in the credible culinary information they provide on their website, www.paarman.co.za, featuring teaching videos, menus and thoroughly tested recipes. She keeps in touch with a monthly newsletter. We were honoured to taste Zandvliet’s first gin made from mandarin oranges – a beautiful product and what a way to start the new season. Zandvliet is known for their excellent shiraz and now, with new owners, produces a full range of wines which were enjoyed by everyone. Their shiraz is still one of the best on the market and the rest of their range is following in that footsteps. In February more than 60 members attended the wine tasting where we tasted the wines from De Grendal wine farm. The farm is one of Cape Town’s oldest farms and Sir David Graaff planted vines on De Grendel in 1999, almost 200 years after the last vines were destroyed. Today this cool climate farm produces top quality wines which we all enjoyed. While more famous for their top sauvignon blancs they also produces excellent red wines and a delicious MCC. 9 South Africa recently played host to the award winning reality TV show Shark Tank, which was aired on prime time on M-Net at 6pm every Sunday. In Shark Tank South Africa, entrepreneurs go up in front of a panel of esteemed successful South African business moguls, known as the “sharks”, who are willing to invest their own money and time in deserving and potentially lucrative business ideas. The trick is in convincing these highly critical and experienced sharks that it will be worth their while to bankroll your business, product or invention. Founder & CEO Chelsea Evans & Jason Newmark of Plan My Wedding, recently pitched their startup business idea on the show. They were successful in securing a R400 000 investment, from Gil Oved (Co-Founder and CEO of the Creative Counsel – South Africa’s largest marketing and advertising company with annual turnovers of R700 million rand and Dawn Nathan Jones - former CEO of Euro Car, leader of one of South Africa’s most successful car rental companies) for a 25% each equity stake in their business. Plan My Wedding is Southern Africa’s first online wedding planning platform, allowing couples to plan their entire wedding here in Southern Africa, from anywhere in the world. Couples will be provided with smart diarised planning, practical guidance and inspiration, budgets, tools, checklists, their own personal dashboards and a wide selection of service providers to choose from. There is a 24 hour support chat line, reminders, appointment books, inspiration boards and a wedding website for couples to design their perfect day. Search engine filters allow the couples to search for the exact supplier/vendor they are looking for within the couple's specific price range and location of their wedding. All these services are free for the couples to use, while there are paid options or extra packages they can also choose. The platform provides flights and honeymoon destination packages to choose from. SOCIAL • Every Sunday from 9:00 - 11:30 social tennis is run by the tennis manager. • Players of all levels mix and match for a morning of fun social doubles. • Numbers have grown and it is wonderful to see the regulars not missing out even when it rains, plus a few new faces every Sunday. • A friendly reminder that social tennis is intended for all levels and therefore stronger players must be prepared to play at least one round with potentially weaker players without making them feel spare. After a few rounds the system sorts out players of a similar level for more evenly matched tennis. • We are also looking into an alternative day or evening to Sunday to include all players wishing to play social so please take a few minutes to provide us some feedback by completing the survey we will send out soon. CLUB CHAMPS • Singles, doubles and mixed doubles events TBA at conclusion of league (April 2017) • Look out for entry details to be sent out soon! SQUASH A very happy new year to all squash players! The summer league has been a great success this year and with only one game to play, as we go to press, the green team captained by Inge Kaul, are marginally in the lead! Thanks to everyone who participated, and also the kind gents who have assisted Andrew Wannenburg with the braai each week. Thanks also to Ath, without whose hard work the tournament would not take place. We have entered 4 masters’, 3 ladies’ and 4 men’s league teams this year. Good luck to all players! Keep enjoying your squash MARGIE HUNT-KEMP 12 BRIDGE If you enjoy playing bridge but shudder at the thought of finding three players, preparing a feast fit for a king, making tea, perhaps offering a glass of wine at the end and the being left with what looks like a disaster area, perhaps social bridge at Kelvin Grove is the answer for you. Social bridge is played on Mondays and Fridays from 13:30 to 17:00 in the Chart Room. On cold winter days there is a cosy fire to keep you warm and in the summer a very efficient air conditioner keeps the temperature at a comfortable level. Added to this, the ever willing Coffee Shop waitresses take orders for refreshments such as fresh fruit juice, minerals, tea, coffee or something “stronger’’ and, of course, delicious eats. You need not bring a partner, nor should you feel obliged to come every week. You may find that you only want to play once or twice a month. Whatever you decide, you are more than welcome. Post mortems and criticism are strongly discouraged and if you are bad tempered, you will certainly not be welcome. Rubber bridge has at least been discontinued and the BODD or BONE scoring system is now used, which is the system favored by millions of bridge players all over the world. The standard of bridge is medium to strong. Unfortunately beginners are not catered for. There is no charge but as the stakes are 10c per 100 points, you will need to bring a few cents with you. Score sheets (but not pens or pencils) are provided. Remember, there is no commitment, so do pay a visit to the social bridge at Kelvin when you are at a loose end on a Monday or Friday afternoon. You may be pleasantly surprised. We look forward to seeing you this year. For more information on bridge, contact Daphne Hawkins on 021 686 7991 or 072 358 4280. DAPHNE HAWKINS GOLF Well Christmas and the New Year festivities have come and gone in rather a blinding flash – and 2017 seems hell bent on doing the same thing – or is it an age thing? I’m pleased to report that everyone appears to have survived the silly season with nothing more serious than self-inflicted AR injuries - and damage to credit cards and cash reserves. From the get-go in early January we have had great support with booking requests exceeding our available reserved times. This is encouraging as it speaks of new blood – Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum!? - meaning growth for the Kelvin Golf Section – great news! If required we shall ask the Club to increase our 4 ball numbers. Clearly new members have read the constitution and realise it is respected and abided with - 1 = Fun … 2 = Fun … 3 = Fun... We had a very fine “Beginning of the Year Party” on Friday 10 February, well-supported and we believe well-enjoyed. The Club came to the party with excellent service, food, attitude and support – even the “GM” had a ball. The evening was “on the house” for regular players - and semi-sponsored for infrequent players and partners. All funded by Fines, Raffles & the Cat. Thank you to all the generous donors for the variety of prizes which found homes through the lucky draw – negotiated by Paul Dukass and big Tom. ...and thanks Paul for your intricate analysis of the year’s results - very interesting. We look forward to more confusing stats in 2017 – and the audit committee is watching out for T-box “exchange rate fixing”!!! Fortunately no politicians or big corporate banks are involved - so the communication will be collusion free… And prizes will be hard earned. Here’s wishing you all a great 2017 on and off the course – Look forward to meeting up with you somewhere on the playing surface. And as always… MAYPD GEOFF CLARK 13 BOWLS MARION ORD TOURNAMENT – 16 DECEMBER 2016 The Marion Ord tournament was a day of good cheer, lots of fun and delightful camaraderie! We introduced a new way of scoring - very interesting and maybe here to stay! Everybody arrived in their best Xmas regalia, which always adds to the atmosphere of fun and cheer. We had good bowls and a splendid lunch and a couple of prizes as well… What more could one wish for at Christmas? Bryan Caldwell, Margaret Fowler and Joyce Dewil were the winning team, followed very closely by Wendy Mitton, Wally Wood and Chris Alston. Nigel Macdonald, Etienne Malan and Daphne Castell took third place. Piers and Penny Steynor were “crowned” as the best dressed and the three very coveted hampers went to: Sandy Bean (see picture below), Carol Henshilwood and Dawn Hillman! THE WINNING MARION ORD TEAM: BRYAN CALDWELL, MARGARET FOWLER AND JOYCE DEWIL MARION ORD TOURNAMENT 2017 2-4-2 COMPETITION As usual the 2-4-2 competition was a huge success and a lot of fun. The ultimate winners of the A section were Geoff DuffelCanham and Ken Kennedy. Shelley and Stuart Park took the honours in the B section. MAD HATTERS ANNUAL DINNER – 24 NOVEMBER 2016 Although we had a couple of grumbles about the “Hat” theme for the Annual Dinner, we were astounded at the effort that went into making the theme work! Our Annual Dinner was, once again, a very enjoyable evening with great food, great service and great company! Thanks to everybody (and partners) who came to enjoy the evening with fellow-bowlers. The evening’s Mad Hatter prizes went to: · The most original/inventive hat - Charmain Lawson · The funniest hat - Paula Bergh · The best overall hats - Carol and David Henshilwood for their “glowing” effort! PERSONAL TRUST INVITATIONAL The Personal Trust Invitational, where KG bowlers get the chance to test their bowling skills against 12 other clubs, was held in glorious Cape Town weather on Sunday 29 January 2017. The best overall team was the team from Durbanville and the best Kelvin team was: Penny Steynor, Mark Lancaster and Steve Berry. OPEN DAY – 8 FEBRUARY 2017 On Wednesday 8 February 2017, we had 9 “guests” turning up to try their hand at bowls! Thanks to everybody who invited friends and family and/or marketed the event! Everybody had lots of fun and we are sure we will be able to persuade some of these “guests” to become permanent KG Bowls members. 14 BOWLS CONT. NITE BOWLS ON 13 FEBRUARY 2017 The first official Bowls Function under the Floodlights took place on 13 February 2017. The event was marketed through posters, the electronic notice board as well as an email to all KG members. Well, we were blown away with the response! All of this happened on Monday 6 February 2017, and by lunchtime we were fully booked for the event with 16 regular bowlers and a whopping 32 “newbies”. We could have filled another rink with the “waiting list”! The evening started off with some complimentary bubbly (sponsored by Personal Trust) followed with a lot of FUN on the Kelvin bowling green. All the “exercise” worked up a serious appetite for all and Kelvin Grove came to the party with their delicious chicken and beef burgers. A fitting end to a stunning evening. Watch this space for more from the Bowls Section. UPCOMING EVENTS ON THE BOWLS CALENDAR FOR 2017 Sunday 26 February 2017 - Personal Trust Trips at 09:00 Monday 13 March 2017 - Nite Bowls under the Floodlights at 18:00 Sunday 2 April 2017 - Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players Fund Bowls Tournament at 08:30 9 April 2017 - KG Friendly against Durbanville Bowling Club 7 May 2017 - KG Friendly against WP Cricket Club. CROQUET With the season now well underway, it is great to report the growth and success of the croquet section of Kelvin Grove. Since our last news clip we have held three extremely well attended internal tournaments with over 40 active members. In November the winners of our handicap doubles were Rob Kruger and Colin Chambers. Runners up Thea Lotz and Anne Impey. The winner of the A section handicap singles was Rob Kruger and the runner up Mike Beamish, while the winner of the B section was Marilyn Bailey, runner up Jill Pitman. In February we held our open doubles championships with a record entry of players. The winners were Neil McHardy and Rob Kruger and the runners up were Margot and Richard Prosser. Congratulations to all our winners and runners up. In our external competitions we have fared well and lie 2nd in the War Tomes league log behind Fish Hoek Croquet Club and equal 1st along with Fish Hoek in the Robinson Cup doubles league. You really went the extra mile to ensure that everything was just perfect. We all enjoyed the delicious snacks prepared by the Waterside chef, washed down with Kelvin’s sparkling Brut! Nothing was too much trouble for you, in fact you epitomised everything that is good about belonging to Kelvin Grove. Very many thanks & kind regards.” - Diana Burns “Dear Sir/Madam On Wednesday evening I hosted three friends for dinner at The Barn. I would like to compliment Nolonwabo Wanga on her excellent service. We all enjoyed our choices from the menu but our evening was made very special by Wanga's cheerfulness, helpfulness and courteousness. She is definitely a complement to The Barn.’’ - Trunell | Dinner Barn Restaurant ‘’Thank you so much for allowing us to use the tables in the Waterside to get out of the cold wind. We really appreciate all your efforts to ensure that we had a good time and the braai was enjoyed by all.’’ - Dawn and Chris Wilson ‘I would like to compliment you on arranging a superb New Year’s Eve function this year. We were under the tent at the poolside and everything went so well. The organisation (arm bands), security, food, music, decor and service were the best I have experienced in the years I have attended the NYE bash. Well done to all!’’ - Peter Versfeld | New Year’s Eve Function ‘’Please convey thanks to the Terrace Team for a wonderful Christmas Eve. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the venue, the meal and attentive service. Starter was brilliant and I would never have thought of serving Norwegian Salmon in that way - absolutely delicious.
