Once Upon a
Mattress
Dear supporters of the performing arts,
We’ve had one incredible season at the new high school, and we’re excited to raise the bar on
quality even more this year, expanding our focus from family to community. Last year, students learned
ways to improve their family dynamic onstage and off, and now they will turn their attention to serving the
community. We will again be joining forces with Cortez Middle School by offering opportunities for
patrons and sponsors to support both program with our ULTIMATE packages. CMS will be performing
two shows, the musical comedy “Adventures of a Comic Book Artist” in the fall and “Hoodie,” a play that
explores being a middle-schooler, in the spring, both under the direction of Angela Gabardi. M-CHS will
have three shows.
Our first show of the season will be our ever popular Haunted House, entitled “Darkness.” Your
imagination will be your worst enemy when you are given only a glow-stick and turned loose into a maze
of complete darkness, where your every sense will turn on you. In November, join us for a production of
Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” as you’ve never experienced it before, in the style of a Science Fiction Bmovie. Robots, aliens, space ships, and magic will take you on a journey beyond this world, as we pay
homage to the Sci-fi classics of the 1950s and 1960s. Our final production will be the spring musical,
“Once Upon a Mattress,” the story of the Princess and the Pea. Join a colorful cast of characters in a fairy
tale that turns the genre upside down. Prince Dauntless can only marry a true princess who can pass every
impossible test his overbearing mother, the queen, throws at her. All hope seems lost until the wild Princess Winnifred takes on the challenge. The classic musical made Carol Burnett a star and is sure to entertain all ages.
We will continue to fine tune our systems this year, from our website to online ticket purchasing to
bring you a quality theatre experience. We hope you will join us on our journey this season, and as always,
thank you for your support of the M-CHS Theatre!

Our Shows This Season
“Darkness”
Haunted House
“The Tempest”
“Once Upon a Mattress”
Grab a glow-stick and venture
into a maze of darkness with
mysteries and scares around
every corner. In the dark, your
senses will play tricks on you,
as you try and find your way
out. This year, we plan to bring
our haunted house home to
M-CHS, so stay tuned for updates.
This Shakespearean adventure, fantasy will be presented in the style of
a 1950s Sci-fi B-movie. We will pay
homage to classis like “The Day the
Earth Stood Still,” “Forbidden Planet,” and “Them”, as we explore what
is believed to be Shakespeare’s final
play. A band of explorers crash land
on a mysterious planet ruled by the
mysterious Prospero and his alien
minions.
The story of the Princess and the Pea
is turned upside down in this classic
fairy-tale musical. Queen Aggravain
will only accept a true princess for her
son, Prince Dauntless, but that means
that her tests are nearly impossible.
When Princess Winnifred comes from
her marshland kingdom, the Queen is
given a worthy adversary, and the
audience is given a rollicking good
time.

Become a Patron — Save Money and Support the Arts!
Q: What is a patron?
A: A patron is a supporter of our troupe, who purchases “season tickets” for our shows.
Q: Why should I become a patron?
A: You get discounted tickets, priority seating for the shows, your name or the name of your business listed in
the programs for each show, AND the undying gratitude of the CMS & M-CHS Drama students.
Q: How much does it cost to be a patron?
A: Cortez Middle School and Montezuma-Cortez High School Drama Departments are working to collaborate
even more this year, so we have a few options available:
 If you are only interested in the 2 shows at CMS, the cost of a patron is $25 for 2 tickets to each show.
 If you are only interested in the 3 shows at M-CHS, the cost of a patron is $35 for 2 tickets to each show.
 If you’d like to see all 5 shows and support both CMS and M-CHS,
you can become an Ultimate Patron for only $55 and receive 2 tickets to each show!

Q: What does my patron money help pay for?
A: Theater is expensive. Royalties have to be paid (the average musical costs $2000-$3000 for rental materials,
fees, and royalties), sets must be built, costumes created and maintained—the list goes on and on. The more financial support we get from the community, the higher the quality of productions we can do in the future.
Q: Can I help MCHS Theater in other ways?
A: Definitely. If you’re interested in advertising, we have sponsorship options available. Just look on the back
of this form for more information and sign up!
