How To... Map Your Home Drive How to Map your Home Drive to access your work whilst outside college Imperial College London – ICT Help Sheet Mapping Your Home Drive – For Windows XP In order to access you Home directory outside of college you must have the VPN service active. For more information see the How To…Setup a VPN Connection booklet. What is Drive Mapping? This is a letter or name assigned to a disk or tape drive. In a computer file system, the basic drive mappings are A: for the floppy disk and C: for the primary hard disk. When new peripherals are added to the system, additional drive mappings are assigned by the operating system based on the next available letter (D:, E:, etc.). In a network, drive mappings reference remote drives, and you have the option of assigning the letter of your choice. For example, on your local machine, you might use K: to refer to drive C: and a specific directory on a server in the network. Each time K: is referenced on that local machine, the drive and directory on the remote machine is substituted behind the scenes CONFIGURATION Firstly you need to find the location of your home directory. Many departments provide your Home Directory from a departmental file server, which your PC connects to when you log on. By Default your Home Directory would then be available from your H: drive. In this case, your Home Directory server may be known to ICT and the ICT Service Desk may be able to provide this information.
