FROM THE
PRESIDENT’S DESK
Greetings Turners!
It’s hard to believe yet another year has passed. Reflecting
back for a moment in 2012, many goals were achieved. All of
the National documents such as the Informational Brochure,
Festival RuleBook and the Cultural “RedBook” including our
By-Laws, previously referred to as “Principles & Statutes”,
were reviewed and re-written in modern day language. These
will soon be available on our web-site and distributed to each
Society and District.
We’ve opened some new doors through the establishment
of a Youth Membership and a Youth Travel Fund. For those Societies that would like
to host a National Competition but are unable to do so lacking the financial means to
get the ball rolling, are now able to seek some financial assistance from the National
funds. The Executive Officers and National Council Members are committed in
providing the ways and means to perpetuate Turnerism. But we can’t do it alone.
Every Turner member is key to the success of our future.
I mentioned in my previous message that we must re-invent ourselves. And that
we must start “now”. You may ask “How are we to do this?” What do we do first?”
Well, we can all start by communicating with other Turners; whether inside your own
Society or District, start sharing what Turnerism means to you with other Turners.
For example, a ‘walking program’ was recently started by a senior member of my
home Society, Aurora Turners. Three times a week, six ‘Turners’ meet to walk around
our gymnasium. And believe it or not, these Turners had never met one another prior
to this activity. It took a little initiative and the will to coordinate this activity; with
no startup costs and very little expense. Now this may not sound like much, but it’s
some place to start.
Make a commitment to gather, participate in some lite physical exercise or social
activity. And do this regularly. Remember, Turners are an extension of our own family.
And, a family that plays together, stays together. Give it a try. What do you have to
lose?
Your 2nd Vice President, Dave Liptak, has coordinated on-going conference calls
with Society Presidents. This was started late in 2012 with positive feedback. Every
other month this year, conference calls will be made to share in successes, failures
and to brainstorm on how to make our organization stronger. The intent is to create a
bond between one another as Turners that will stand the test of time.
Thanks to your 1st Vice President, Carole Brennan, the National Council has
adopted a new Mission Statement. It simply states: “American Turners, Inc. furthers
the original principles of a Sound Mind in a Sound Body within the network of
individual U.S. Societies by promoting and facilitating Turnerism through education,
advertising, assistance and example.”
We also have adopted a new Vision Statement: “The American Turners vision
is to provide a conduit for growth in areas of physical education as well as technical
and technological advances for continued success. American Turners will guide by
example and lead with compassion.” It is the responsibility of every Turner to believe
in our vision and to carry out our mission.
Our motto of a Sound Mind in a Sound Body has remained steadfast although
will continue to be tested. Turners, draw strength from the courage of those that have
preceded us. And may our deep belief in this cause and the actions of each of us be
the very catalyst that perpetuates Turnerism now and into the future.
Sincerely & Respectfully,
Thomas R Bozonelos
National President - American Turners

Akron Turners
June Ewing of Akron Turners, built a model of the original 1800’s Akron
Turnverein by using a couple of old pictures of the building and memories
from June, Ruth Vera and William Severns probably the only remaining
members who grew up at the grand old building that was demolished in
1975.
Her intent is to preserve for future Turners, the interior rooms and what
they were used for. The project was started in January 2012 from a rough
drawing on a piece of graph paper laying out the various rooms with no
knowledge of scale, drafting or architecture and a lot of trial and error.
The unfinished model was displayed at the National Convention and
is still being worked on. Front steps, lampposts and the Turner Club sign
have been added. Still to come are all of the tables, chairs, pool tables,
kitchen appliances and drapes for the ballroom.
Wouldn’t it be nice if all clubs did this?
Aurora Turners
On Saturday, December 15, 2012 the gymnast from Aurora Turners put on a Holiday show for the public. It was
amazing to see 47 gymnasts of different levels perform a variety of activities on the various gymnastics equipment.
The routines where done to some holiday songs that were familiar such as Joy to the World, All I Want for
Christmas and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Others where done to songs such as Carol of the Bells, The Star,
Joyful Kings, Santa Claus Christmas Through Your Eyes, Run Run Rudolf and Sleigh Ride.
The various routines where done on bars, chairs, beam, 3-man vault, tumbling and the rest where ribbons and
rhythmic. The show lasted about 45 minutes and was attended by about 150 people.
The girls showed great discipline during the show as not one word was yelled by any coach as to where the
groups had to be. Our head Gymnastics Coach Kim Swann along with Asst. Coach Lori Phillip, coach’s Cara
Smoczynski and Jenny Hoch, Junior coach’s Tiffany Thomas and Mandi Stangle where able to have all girls
well prepared for the show. As President of Aurora Turners I was very proud of the actions of the team and the
performance was absolutely great. Congratulations Team.

Kinder Weihnachtsfeier – Children’s Christmas Party
The Los Angeles Turners, partnering with area schools, German immersion language schools and German classes
administered by the German-American School Association, played co-host to the annual German-American League’s
Kinder Weihnachtsfeier in early December. Our facility filled with just over 100 little ones- resembling delightful
Hummel figurines. They were entertained by Turner David Markham – magician extraordinaire and various classes
that sang, recited and danced. There were craft tables and face painting.
Santa spoke with children and presented them with a small gift. A massive hoard of burgers was consumed and
several of the 150 or so parents were flush-of-cheek with Glühwein. What a wonderful way to celebrate the season –
children, the Weihnachtsmann, Stille Nacht and O Tannenbaum.

Toledo Turners
Hello Everyone. It’s been a long time since I’ve written a Toledo article for the Topics. My apologies. Even though I may
have been lax in my writing, the Turners have still been going strong.
Women’s Auxiliary:
The Auxiliary held its Annual Picnic on July 29th. We had 24 ladies attend, many who only see each other at this
function. The ladies prepared a smorgasbord of goodies Chicken Salad Sandwiches, potluck and dessert. Everyone
enjoyed catching up on news. Thanks to all who helped out with this event. Sadly it will be our last.
Several of our Turner Ladies have passed on in the last year. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of Cleo
Gooding, Scootie Lais, Gene Guether and Emily Wiedeman.
Our hard-working ladies also prepared a fine lunch for the many souls who helped set up for the German-American
Festival on August 19. The workers feasted on Ribs, Mashed Potatoes/Gravy, a Squash Medley, Rolls and Dessert.
German-American Festival:
Thanks to all our members who donated of their time to work a shift or two at this year’s fest. I heard it was one of the
best fests yet (I wish I didn’t have to miss it).
Gymnastics:
Our gymnasts had a busy year...starting off in January with their Annual Sock Hop Meet. This is always well-attended
and very well run, thanks to the organizational skills of Deb McGee and her awesome crew. They had 198 participants!
Two of our Boys’ Team members made it to Regionals. They are Nick Thompson and Bryce Cherko. Applause, guys!
Our Gymnasts also participated in several events over the summer. They performed/marched/tumbled their way down
the streets in Whitehouse for the Cherry Fest Parade. They also performed at St. Patrick of Heatherdown’s Festival. Our
level 4 Boys’ Team is competing in the “Y’s For Guys” meet for the first time. Good Luck! Results soon.
Turner Friends:
These gals seem to find time in their busy schedules to still get together for fun times. They’ve gone out to eat at Olive
Garden, Sebastiano’s and even had a cookout at Julie and Ron Tremp’s.
Condolences, Get-Wells and Congratulations:
We lost several dear members in the past year. We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Kathy Hoenig,
Ursula Kretschmer, Barbara Candelore, Jack Anderson, Hans Wandscher and Richard Schmitz.
Get Well wishes go out to several members:
Congratulations are in order for Rita Konecki (birth of her first great-grandchild) and to all of our College and High
School grads.
“Mile High Marathon”:
Sabine Croley received her T-Shirt award for her achievements last year!
In closing, again, my apologies for being out of the loop for so long. Many times I have nothing to report. I promise to
stay in touch!

National Health & Physical Education Report
I hope all of you had a wonderful Holiday season. But don’t let those cookies, candies and wonderful holiday treats get
the better of you. Keep active to shed any extra pounds you may have picked up. There are plenty of things to do on a
daily basis for a little workout. Use the stairs instead of the elevator, ride a stationary bike, go mall walking, park at the far
end of the parking lot, and don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
River City Turners is going to host an Adult Gymnastic Meet in their newly remodeled gym on June 15, 2013. It is
open to anyone over the age of 18. The meet will be held in honor of Larry Larimore. Plan a little trip to Louisville and join
River City Turners at this fun event. Look for more information in this issue of Turner Topics, or contact Dot Steinlage at:
[email protected].
As mentioned in the previous issue of Turner Topics, we now have a Youth Membership and a Youth Transportation
Fund. The rules for the Transportation Fund are as follows:
• Must be an American Turner Youth Member or a child of a card-carrying member, per National Turner rules.
• Societies must enforce: All members participating must be in good standing with the National Office and Societies
must have submitted and have a current statistical report on file in the National Office.
• Each athletic competition or tournament is individual unto itself, and requests for financial assistance must be
submitted on an individual basis, except National Festivals or Tournaments involving more than one day, will be
considered as a single scheduled event.
• Financial requests must be submitted to the National Office within 60 days from the event. NHPEC will confirm that
the member competed at the Turner National athletic event before any payment will be considered.
• Members within a 50-mile radius of the National event will not receive reimbursement.
• Society President and member’s parent must sign financial assistance form. (Form will be available in the revised
Informational Brochure or from NHPEC Chairperson)
• Parent signature not required for a Youth Member that is between 18 and 21 years old that qualifies as a Youth
Member because their local State laws prohibit him/her from being an adult member.
• 1/3 of the amount collected annually in this fund will be used for transportation to annual Turner National events. This amount is to be divided by the number of competitors who submit a request. Total reimbursement will not
exceed $100 to any competitor for a Turner National event.
• 2/3 of the amount collected annually in this fund will be reserved for Festival transportation. (The maximum payment
per competitor is to be determined, based on the amount of funds available)
• Any amount not used in a year will be rolled into the Festival portion of this fund.
Stay active in Turners and continue living our motto of a Sound Mind in a Sound Body.

River City Turner
We are planning an adult gym meet to be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at River City Turners in honor of our late
president Larry Larimore. Our newly remodeled gym would like to host this event that Larry loved and looked forward
to competing in.
We are inviting all adults 18 and over, members and non-members from all societies to come and compete or just
be a spectator. We want to reunite all past and present gymnasts and coaches for a fun and festive gathering. You do
not have to compete but come anyway. This would be a great way to keep in shape and prepare for the next Festival.
For competition you need to pick 3 events from the following: Vaulting - Uneven bars - Parallel Bars - Low Beam High Beam - Floor Ex. - Pommel Horse - High Bar - Rings and Rhythmic Gymnastics: ( Ribbon - Hoop - Clubs - Ball )
note: Gym attire is optional.
For more information and competition rules please contact one of the following:

ETF Report
As we close out the year 2012 on a sad note, due to news from CT, CO and the many other places in our
nation where individuals were intent on destroying human life, it reaffirms my belief in our American Turner
organization as something very worth having and keeping for something strong and good to rely upon when
these negative events test our mental fiber!
Through all the many generations that the American Turners have perpetuated “A Sound Mind In A Sound
Body” it may have lost some meaning to none-believers but remains just as positive today as it was to those
who believed it in the 1840’s and had the courage to use it as the foundation to build upon for what we now
have available to us in 2013 and beyond!
In 1946 seven Turner men had the foresight to organize and charter the Endowment Trust. Sixty-seven
years later those men are only names in our history and in their place another seven Turners carry on their
work and programs, with a few improvements, to hopefully give all Turners a positive foundation to continue
building upon and something solid to rely upon in time of stress and need.
Take strength in knowing your Endowment Trust remains true to its original purpose and cause and join
with me in the pride that comes from being part of this great organization!
We can only hope for a better world in which we can all enjoy peace, prosperity and good health in 2013
and beyond. That is the wish I send to you on behalf the Trustees and Officers of your Endowment Trust!
Have faith and support your local Turn Verein – we are still building for your future!

Clinton Turners
I am honored to be awarded the William Meyer Scholarship for the 2012 –
2013 year. Thank you and your committee for generously providing me with
this award. I am a dedicated Turner member who intends to contribute to our
organization for years to come.
Your award will be beneficial in helping me continue to achieve my
academic and personal goals. I am a full time student who is enrolled in
the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Commissioning (AFROTC) program
at the University of New Hampshire. Starting January 14th, I will be doing
an internship at the Center for the Intrepid at Brooks Army Medical Center
in San Antonio, Texas. Here, I will be doing therapeutic rehabilitation and
community integration with our returning soldiers from Afghanistan and
Iraq that have acquired an amputation or severe burn. My goal is to apply
the knowledge and experience from this internship to start up an adaptive
gymnastics program at Clinton Turners; pending on the direction of my
military career upon commissioning.
Thanks to your generous support, I feel that I am one step closer to
achieving this goal. This award is very meaningful not only financially, but emotionally as well. Thank you so much for
helping this full time student, AFROTC cadet, and devoted member to Turners fulfill my dreams.

ATNY Sandy
Dear Fellow Turners,
I hope everyone is having a wonderful Holiday Season right now. We here in New York are doing more than decking
our halls right now; we’re also trying to repair them. Not everyone is familiar with ATNY, so for those of you who don’t
know, we are a beautiful waterfront club in the Bronx. What you also may not know is that we were right in the eye of
Hurricane Sandy when she hit. We’re fortunate to say that nobody was hurt, but our beautiful waterfront property was
not as fortunate. Our gorgeous pier was completely demolished and our entire seawall was demolished due the strength
of that horrific storm. We also loss a significant part of our roof as well as sustained major damage to our windows. Like
all of you, our club is our home away from home and we’re asking for help from fellow Turners to help keep it that way.
Most of the damage will not be covered by insurance and we are doing all we can to raise funds to keep our club afloat
but the repairs will cost thousands. Believe me, I hate asking people for help but we really need it. Anything you can do
to help us here in New York would be greatly appreciated. Every little bit helps and any donations can be made out to:

2013 National Bowling Tournament & Live Mouse Racing
Kansas City Turners
Kansas City Turners looks forward to hosting the 2013 national bowling tournament and chance to meet/talk with
everyone. For Saturday evening’s dinner & entertainment, we will be offering a $12 BBQ buffet dinner, cocktails and
live mouse racing. If you have never seen a mouse race, it’s a blast. 6 races with 6 mice each. The 6 previous winners
to crown the Champion run the Championship Race. Before each race, you get to view the mice in the paddock, then
pick out your winner, make your $2 bets, they are called to the starting gate and shortly after that you hear “and they’re
off”. We just had a mouse race last month. The mouse I sponsored and named “Mouse-shit on the rail” took off like a
cheetah down the 10’ glass track. My odds were 3 ½ to 1 on my $2 bet and I already had my winnings spent. He was
15 lengths ahead when near the finish line he stopped & turned around. I saw my $7 running the wrong way. I also tried
my luck with the mouse roulette wheel. Don’t ask. Even if you don’t bowl, you should come just for the live mouse races.
After several cocktails and sporting your KCT mouse trap necklace, possible wearing a cheese head, mouse ears & tails,
you’re sure to make it on the front page of the Turner Topics in all your splendor. Come enjoy the night here in KC with
your mouse, maybe be the big cash winner while sharing all this with your fellow Turners. It doesn’t get any better than
that. Go to the Mouse-man’s web site www.casinoparties1.com/ mouse racing for a sneak preview.
We also will be running a bus to and from the clubhouse to the hotels from 5:00 till 12:00 pm since no one needs to
donate to the Belton/Cass County Police Christmas Fund.

OBITUARIES
Chicago NW
Lucille B. Bothfeld
(1915 - 2012)
It is with deep sorrow that we must
announce the passing of a loyal
devoted Turner, Lucille Bothfeld.
Lucille was the third born
of seven children. Raised in the
depression times, all were lucky
to obtain jobs to support the
homestead. Lucille graduated
from Carl Schurz High School on
Chicago’s north side in February
of 1933. She was a graduate with
honors from Northeastern Illinois
University, formerly the Chicago
Teachers College North.
Lucille taught at Brentano
elementary school for 2 ½ years, in
Chicago, then she moved to Bluff
Lake in Antioch, Illinois teaching
fifth grade for five years. In 1969 she
moved back to Chicago and started
teaching fifth grade at Plainfield
school in Des Plaines, Illinois. She
remained there till her retirement in
1980.
In her early years with Turners
she was member of the Forward
Turners in the active ladies class
in 1933. In 1960 she joined the
Chicago Northwest Turners. She
became recording secretary for
the society in 1963 a position she
held for 42 years. She was an active
member of the Glee Club from 1962
until it disbanded in 1985. She
served as secretary for three years
and treasurer for two years. On the
Illinois District she held the offices
of secretary and treasurer for several
different years.
She participated in the following
Turnfest’s in 1936 in Cleveland,
1971 in Milwaukee, 1979 in Moline,
1983 in Indianapolis and 2003 in
Aurora. She was bumbler at the
Stuttgart International Fest in
Germany in 1973 and participated

in the International Fest in Hanover
in 1978. She served as second
Turnwart for one year and 1st
Turnwart for two years.
Lucille was a familiar face
at many District and National
conventions as a delegate,
convention secretary or committee
secretary. It did not matter what
task she performed she did it with
her whole heart and with total
involvement.
When North West Turners turned
to having Bingo to supplement
their finances, Lucille was there, as
Co-Chairman of Bingo. She did the
set-up for the kitchen, shopping for
the kitchen, cooking for the bingos,
setting-up the entry packs for Bingo
and did the financial books for the
bingo.
There was a Memorial
Celebration for Lucille at Illinois
Turner Camp on Sunday, September
16.
Wherever you are today, Lucille,
whatever journeys you have taken,
say “Hello” to all our past Turners
you may meet along the way.

Val Miller
(1943 - 2012)
44-year member of
Ft. Wayne Turners
One of Fort
Wayne Turner’s
finest members passed away on
September 3, 2012. Valerie Miller
died peacefully at home after a
courageous battle with cancer. Born
June 18, 1943, in Niles, Mich., she
was a daughter of the late William
Joseph Callahan who lost his life
serving our country in World War
II and the late Patricia Mae Peters.
After her mother remarried, the late
James R. George raised her.
She was a 1961 graduate of South
Side High School and a1964 nursing
graduate of Lutheran School. She
began her nursing career with
Dr. Kermit Perrin and then with
Dr. Richard Connelly. Later, she
managed Medical Dental Home
Health Care on Lake Avenue for
over 25 years. She enjoyed sewing
clothes for Barbie and American
Doll with her mother to the delight
of many little girls. She was a
volunteer for 10 years at the Fort
Wayne Embassy Theatre, and since
1968, she and her husband, Larry,
have been members of Fort Wayne
Turners.
She participated in almost every
Turner national bowling tournament
since being a member, watched and
cheered many softball games and
tournaments. In 1994, she received
the ‘Vorwarts Award’ which is the
highest distinction for a Fort Wayne
Turner member. In 2000, she had
the honor of being the first female
president of Fort Wayne Turners.
She volunteered countless hours
organizing the annual Turner garage
sale, working at Germanfest selling
tickets or counting money, riding
her bike to collect money for Johnny
Appleseed parking, and organizing
campers, food and events for the
Wing Dings, to name a few.
If any of her Turner friends needed

Hans Wandscher
(1935 - 2012)
Hans Georg Gustav Wandscher, age 77, passed away on
Monday, August 27, 2012. He was born April 22, 1935
in Oldenburg, Germany. Hans held many offices at the
Turners, including President, Entertainment Chair, Editor,
Recording Secretary, Phys. Ed. Chair, District Officer and
Baerstein President. He was an active participant in Fishing, Folk Dancing,
Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Bowling, Turtle Hunting (where he was known
as the “Big Kahuna”), Camping, Volleyball, and many Turnfests. Hans was
named Prinz of Mardi Gras in 1969 with his Prinzessin Geri Yeager.
Hans started his love of the Turners with Turnverein “Glueck Auf” in his
hometown in Germany, where he was also an active member, participating
in Tischtennis, Theater, Camping, Gymnastics and Folk Dancing.
Hans was one of many Turners who helped with the original building
projects at Oak Shade Grove, putting in many hours building the GAF
Hall and helping to plant new trees in the tree nursery in 1993 with his
grandchildren. Hans gave many years as Program Book Distribution Chair,
helping the German Clubs of local high schools raise funds. He gave many
worker hours to the Fest as well.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Regina, along with their children
Sabine Gacek Croley, Susanne (Andy) McCray and Dieter (Marischa)
Wandscher, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, also his siblings
Ingeborg Mueller, Liselotte Wandscher and Herbert Wandscher, along with
many nieces and nephews.
Hans was an avid supporter of our Turner Phys. Ed. program and was
recognized by many of the children. He will be greatly missed.
In closing, I would like to offer a personal thanks for all the kindnesses
bestowed on our family. Thank you all for your love of this great man.
-Sabine Croley (I’ll get my polka in heaven)
