2013 ANNUAL REPORT Where people with disabilities thrive Dear Friends, It has been nearly 30 years since North Coast Community Homes was founded to respond to the urgent need for high-quality community-based housing for people with disabilities. As we approach that milestone anniversary in November, 2014, we deeply appreciate how much we have been able to do together with your support over all these years. TOGETHER thriving together North Coast Community Homes develops and maintains safe, comfortable and affordable housing of high quality where individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illness and other disabilities can thrive. We have been able to develop more than 200 homes where nearly 1,000 people with disabilities live. We have provided safe, comfortable and affordable homes that are the foundation our residents need to begin to thrive. We share the challenges and accomplishments of providing for the most vulnerable and needy people in our community. We will continue to respond to new opportunities and to find creative solutions for people who have disabilities, and for their families, friends, neighbors and communities. That word community is also very important to us. After all, it’s in our name. As members of the Northeast Ohio community, we deeply value the relationships we have built together over the years. Through your support, be it a gift of your time, talent or treasure, you have become an essential part of the lives of the people who have found a home with us. They are grateful, and so are we. That’s why we’re confident we can all keep thriving together. Patrick FinleyStephen McPeake Board Chair President and CEO 2 3 our stories AT NCCH, WE HELP HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE FIND THEIR PLACE TO THRIVE. THRIVING AND GRATEFUL Joey Case and his mother, Betty, have been members of the North Coast Community Homes family for more than 20 years. During that time, Joey has found a place to thrive — a Westlake home that “provides him with opportunities to do many things with his peers he may not otherwise have experienced,” says Betty, who is grateful that NCCH has always responded to her requests to work together to enhance her son’s life. SHARING AND STORYTELLING While reading is an activity most people can “Widening driveways and installing pocket doors, shower disabilities simply don’t have the ability to do so. improvements I can attest to,” she says of the work That’s where NCCH resident Jamie Abner, who NCCH has done for Joey. has a disability herself, fills a great need. And although Joey, 37, has developmental disabilities On a regular basis, Jamie shares her passion and is non-verbal, he loves music and can be heard “singing” along with his CDs most evenings while jamming on his guitar. He attends dances and parties regularly, bowls in a league and has been on assorted road trips. “North Coast is a fantastic organization,” Betty affirms. “As an aging single parent, it is assuring that when I pass away, Joey will continue to have a lovely home and proper care.” 4 easily enjoy every day, many individuals with handrails, and wheelchair ramps are just a few of the for books by reading aloud to her peers. “I love reading to people who can’t do it themselves,” she says. In addition, Jamie also takes her talents to a Stark County preschool, where she reads stories to children. Jamie’s passion for storytelling is so strong, she has actually authored several children’s books, most of them using her life experiences as “I love reading to people who can’t do it themselves.” enlightening and inspirational lessons. 5 ANNUAL REPORT FINANCIALS “I enjoy hanging out in my room and listening to my favorite music!” ATHLETIC AND ACTIVE You would think the idea of careening down a hill on skis in blustery weather, or swimming length after length in a pool, would be completely unimaginable for someone with a significant physical disability. And those who have come to know this NCCH resident have discovered he is a motivated entrepreneur, a music lover, an artist and a writer. Recently, Ty, who works from his wheelchair, opened his own business, Tyrone’s Art & Design, to sell his original artwork. Business is already booming! When he’s not building his business, you’ll find Ty working hard on his computer and writing Every snowy Saturday morning during winter, you’ll find Mike, who lives in an NCCH home in Westlake, carving out the slopes at the Boston Mills/ 191,362 Brandywine Ski Resort. Our biennial gala, Home Sweet Homes IV, would not have been the success it was without the volunteers of Alpha Delta Pi at the University of Akron, who cheerfully took on all kinds of tasks for what they call “a worthy cause and wonderful organization.” Members of the Cleveland Young Professional Senate also volunteered enthusiastically, as did the City Beautiful organization. In Akron, students from Hoban High School spent many volunteer hours landscaping and planting gardens alongside our mental health residents. In Stark County, a group of volunteers from The Timken Company did a similar job. If you or your group is interested in volunteering, we’d love to hear from you. Just give us a call or visit our website! 8 9 “There are some amazing stories here.” - a volunteer OUR DONORS PARTNERS ($25,000 & above) Deaconess Community Foundation Dworken & Bernstein Co., LPA Ann & Barry Klein The Burton D.
