Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to write numbers in expanded form.
Here is your chance to help your child practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

EXPANDED FORM
Parent Pointer —
Writing numbers in expanded form helps your child understand the
value of each digit in the number. This skill will help your child better
understand the magnitude of numbers as he or she works with larger
ones as he or she continues through school.
Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read through the How to Expand reference sheet with
your parent or guardian. Study the steps needed to write a number in
expanded form. Then, use these same strategies to complete the Let’s
Expand! activity page.
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show
what you know.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (

How to Expand
Expanded form is taking a number apart and showing it using
the place value of each digit. Look at the place-value chart
below.
Hundreds
5
Tens
8
Ones
2
This means that there are 5 hundreds, 8
tens, and 2 ones, or the number 582.
5 hundreds = 500
8 tens = 80
2 ones = 2
So, the expanded form for 582 is 500 + 80 + 2.
What is the expanded form of 46? If you said 40 + 6, you
are correct!!! If not, look back at the place-value chart and see where the
digits in 46 belong. Then try it again.
What happens if there is a zero in the tens place? What
would the expanded form look like?

Let’s Expand!
Directions: With the help of your parent or guardian, cut out the cards
from the next page. Use the cards to show your parent or guardian how
the numbers on this page look when placed in expanded form. Make sure
you choose the correct place value and use addition signs in between
each place value. You may want to cross out each number as you do it in
order to keep track of the ones you’ve done.
Here’s an example for 527.
