our Religious and Moral Education leaflet

While our theology-related degrees are led by Highland
Theological College UHI, students can also access the degrees
from our new base in Glasgow, or from one of our other campuses.
Our library is one of the foremost theological libraries in
Scotland housing collections including the Rutherford
House library, William Temple collection from the Rylands
library, and Migne’s Patrologia from Fort Augustus Abbey
library.

Students benefit from being taught by our research-active staff
who are producing work that has international as well as UK-wide
reach and significance. The team is actively engaged in research
across the whole spectrum of theological disciplines – from
biblical studies to church history to systematic and philosophical
theology – and regularly present their findings internationally.
Religious and
Moral Education
The college boasts an extensive library of more than 60,000
theological titles, some of which are globally important archives,
and attracts research students from around the world. At present,
students from New Zealand, South Korea and America are
conducting their doctoral research alongside students from across
the UK.
The university specialises in providing opportunities
to study the Christian faith in an evangelical, reformed,
non-denominational context at Highland Theological
College UHI in Dingwall. As a small specialist college,
our staff and students get to know each other well,
contributing to the family atmosphere and supportive
learning environment.
Theological Studies
BA (Hons)
This honours degree gives students a broad
knowledge and understanding of the main
disciplines of Christian theology, and the
personal and professional capabilities
required for a variety of ministries or general
employment. Students read a wide range of
theology across all main traditions and have
access to special collections in the college’s
impressive library. A work placement enables
students to relate their acquired theoretical
knowledge to real-life situations. Visiting
speakers give students a flavour of the different
areas of service that may be of interest for
future employment or volunteering, for
example: churches; seminaries; hospital
chaplaincy; army chaplaincy; and mission
agencies in the UK and abroad.
Scottish History/
History and Theology
BA (Hons)
These joint honours degrees are led by
expert staff at Highland Theological College
UHI and the university’s Centre for History,
both of which possess recognised expertise
in their respective fields. The history
element provides a thorough examination
of Scotland’s place in history in relation to
Britain, Europe and the wider world. The
theology element provides for the study of
all the main traditions. Students benefit from
access to recognised experts on the academic
staff of both disciplines, whose own research
interests are reflected in the modules they
teach. These joint honours degrees provide
students with a distinctive study opportunity
combining two different but complementary
subjects.

BA (Hons)
This interdisciplinary honours degree is aimed
at developing the leaders of the future, giving
students the opportunity to study the three
most influential realities impacting people’s
lives. The aim of the course is to encourage
debate, discussion and critical thinking about
issues in life and society. Students explore
and gain an understanding of the key themes
within each of the three fields: how markets
behave and interact; how politics shapes our
lives; and how philosophical ideas influence
society. Graduates will have the skills to
pursue a wide range of careers including local
government, civil and diplomatic services,

Profiles
Beth Fraser is in her second year of the
BA History and Theology at our Highland
Theological College UHI campus.
“ I enjoy the style of teaching.
Often a significant part of
seminars is discussion based
and it’s fantastic to hear other
students’ take on a question.
They’ve often read a different
article from you, or analyse the
same information, but have a
totally different conclusion. I
really enjoy that, you learn a
lot from other people. I love
my subjects. I always found
history interesting but that
interest has grown and grown
into real enjoyment. Theology
was attractive to me both as a
Christian and as someone who
likes history – understanding
the Bible and the Church is key
to gaining a clearer insight into
the last 2000 years of world
history. ”
Sean Carnochan, from Edinburgh, is in his fourth year
of the BA (Hons) Theological Studies at our Highland
Theological College UHI, Dingwall campus.
“ I applied to other universities but
Highland Theological College UHI’s
reputation made it my first choice. The
ease of communication with lecturers
was my favourite aspects of the course.
In a larger university, this kind of
communication with lecturers probably
would have been impossible. ”
Len Cazaly is a lecturer at Highland Theological College UHI. He is a graduate of our BA (Hons)
Theological Studies degree and of our Masters in Theology, so is well placed to help students
through their studies. Len is an active researcher, as well as being involved in church life as an
elder, and holds the office of Reader in the Church of Scotland.
Profile
Viktoria Hricova, from Slovakia, is in her second year of the BA (Hons)
Philosophy, Politics and Economics based at our Perth College UHI campus.
“ The course is very diverse and allows me to study three
influential disciplines that are applicable worldwide. It allows
me to think critically about important issues in our society
and further my understanding in the three disciplines. With
this degree there are many options and careers to get into
from journalism to diplomacy as well as various jobs in
politics and economics. The options are endless. If you are
interested in the three disciplines, this course is definitely
the right choice for you. ”
Talking about the BA (Hons) Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), Dr Innes Visagie,
Programme Leader, says:
“ The Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree is an inter - and multidisciplinary programme and is significant for pursuing a career in fields
such as economics, business, and public services; including the civil
and diplomatic services and local government. The degree is also useful
for those intending further studies in law, journalism, social work and
education with the aim of pursuing a career in any of the related fields. “
