DSTS announced in Spring
2014 that it was updating
weather cancellations for Fall
2014. In an effort to better
address inclement weather
cancellations,
DSTS
has
introduced weather zones.
DSTS encourages you to
review the new zones on our
website at www.dsts.on.ca.
The four zones are as follows:
Zone 1 - Brock Area
Zone 2 - Uxbridge Area
Zone 3 - Scugog Area
Zone 4 - South Durham Region
Area
The website indicates the
schools that are in each zone.
We would encourage all
families to ensure that they
have confirmed which zone
applies to their school and
area.
CARTWRIGHT
CENTRAL
IS IN ZONE 3
IMPORTANT REMINDER:
When busses are cancelled in
the morning, they do not run
in the afternoon.
If busses are cancelled on a hot
lunch day, hot lunch is
cancelled as well. Orders will
be filled on the following
Tuesday.

Book
Club
is
in
full
swing.
We have a large
group of grades 4-8 students
meeting weekly to read
together. It is the quietest
club
around!
If
you
happened by during our
meeting, you would see students engaged in
reading books they have chosen. As books are
finished they are being added to our growing list
of good reads.
Mrs. Collins-Barkey and
Mrs. Lalonde have been excited to see so many
enthusiastic students committed to reading for the
love of it. Keep those pages turning!

We are looking for supply lunch
supervisors! Consider being a crucial
part of the Cartwright Central Public
School experience! If you are available
on an ‘on-call’, part time basis; we would love to
have you on our lunch supervisor supply list! This is
a paid position. If you have a flexible schedule, and
you are interested in supporting the amazing
students here at CCPS, give Mr.Wragg a call at
905-986-4227, or email at [email protected].
Better yet - stop in and let me know if you are
interested! Hope to see you soon!
Mr.Wragg
Arriving on time maximizes learning time
and increases student success.
Cartwright Central PS entry times
are as follows:
7:50 a.m. Duty starts
8:00 a.m. Entry Bell
8:05 a.m. 1st Period Bell
In the morning, duty starts at 7:50 a.m.. If
you are dropping off your child at school,
please drop him/her at the west end of
the school, at the bike racks, and he/she
will walk around the school to get to their
assigned door. Our entry bell rings at
8:00 a.m. All students are expected to be
at the rear doors ready to enter for
8:00 a.m. and then in class ready to learn
for the 8:05 a.m. 1st period bell. Anyone
arriving after 8:00 a.m., is considered
late, needs to enter the front doors, and
must go to the office for a late slip.
Punctuality
is
important,
learning
happens from the first minutes of the day.
Thank you for helping us to make sure
the learning day gets off to a good start.

Today’s Math Classroom
Students used to spend almost all their time working at their desks, with the teacher at the blackboard and with little discussion. Math classes today look, sound, and feel quite different.
How and Why it’s Different
If you peeked inside your child’s math class, here are some things you would notice.

students working on their own, in pairs, in small groups, independently and
with teacher direction

students engaged in a wide variety of tasks — practising skills, solving
problems about real-life situations, playing games, and applying math concepts
to design challenges

students using a variety of physical and digital learning tools as they explore
math ideas and solve problems

students using a variety of tools, including paper and pencil, chart paper and
markers, and digital devices, to write and record their math thinking

students talking about connections they have made personally or exploring
new math concepts and skills

students sharing their strategies for solving a problem
Learning math involves understanding concepts and procedures, acquiring skills, and applying
math processes. Each of these aspects of learning requires different learning and teaching strategies. As well,
individual students learn differently. It’s important for students to have opportunities to learn in a variety of
ways.
Myths & Facts
Myth: Children learn math best when the teacher simply shows them how to do it.
Fact: Students learn best when they are active participants in the learning process. They learn by participating in conversations, asking questions and being curious and skeptical.
Mindfulness supports a growth mindset and helps with self-regulation!

Some Dates of Significance for February…
February is Black History Month
This observance was first launched in 1926 in the
United States by Carter G. Woodson during the second
week in February as Negro History Week. It evolved
over time and became Black History Month in 1976. In
December of 1995, the Parliament of Canada officially
recognized February as Black History Month in Canada.
During February, the significant achievements and
contributions in the areas of medicine, human rights,
art, culture, politics, and public service made by people
of African and Caribbean descent throughout history, as
well as their struggles to overcome colonialism and
racism, are officially recognized and celebrated.
February 3rd – Setsubun-sai (Shinto)
February 14th –Saint Valentine’s Day
February 15th
February 15 was declared National Flag of
Canada Day in 1996. It marks the day in
1965 when our red and white maple leaf
flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in
Ottawa,
and
indeed,
hundreds
of
communities across Canada. Red and white
were designated as Canada's official colours
in 1921 by His Majesty King George V.
February 20 – Family Day (Ontario)
February 20th - World Day of Social Justice (UN)
February 21st – International Mother Language Day (UNESCO)
February 22th –
On February 22, students and staff are encouraged to wear a pink article of
clothing to send the powerful message that discrimination related to
homophobia, transphobia, and sexism will be challenged. This Anti-Bullying
Day grew from a student protest against an incident of homophobic, sexist
bullying in a Nova Scotia high school. This positive social action was initiated
by David Shepherd and Travis Price, who bought and distributed over 50 pink
shirts to raise awareness in response to the incident, where a male student
was called a homosexual for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school.
February 28th – Shrove Tuesday

At C.C.P.S. we are focusing on the Character Traits
of Kindness and Respect for January and February.
We are spreading kindness and showing respect
throughout the school and on the yard. In order to
extend our campaign to the greater community, we
are collecting items such as toiletries, socks, hats
and mittens to help a local agency serving
homeless youth. The items will be donated to help
those in need in Durham Region.
All staff
and students are invited to show kindness to
someone in need by making a donation. Thank you
for supporting this social action project!
