2011 Annual Report

Supporting people through
all aspects of their life
2011 Annual Report to the Community
President’s Message
As I look back on the past year I am proud to say that at Ability Beyond Disability, we continue to
lead the way in helping people with disabilities to live life to the fullest. For that, I am grateful to our
dedicated employees, volunteers, donors and partners.
With the support of the community, we are growing. We are helping more people and offering
more services each and every day. As we grow, we remain true to our founding beliefs that every
person deserves a place in our community. Whether it’s helping a teenager who is aging out of the
school system to build a life of their own, helping an adult return to work after an injury or helping
someone age with dignity in an environment that is caring and warm - Ability Beyond Disability is
committed to supporting people with disabilities throughout every stage of their lives.
At Ability Beyond Disability we are forging ahead in our commitment to provide the highest
quality of services to the growing number of people with disabilities who need our help. With our
assistance they can and will achieve their hopes and dreams. The people we serve will have a safe
place to call home, the opportunity to earn a paycheck and will age with dignity in the community.
Together, with each one of you, we will continue to grow and thrive so that we can meet the needs
of all those who look to Ability Beyond Disability for a brighter future.
The reason we began is still what guides us. As we grow and evolve we continue our focus on
the individual and ensure that each person has the opportunity to live, work and be a part
of our community.
Warm Regards,
Thomas H. Fanning

Support When They
Needed it Most
For Cathleen Sulli’s son Brian, Ability Beyond Disability has made a world of difference. Brian receives
In-Home services from Ability Beyond Disability to work on life skills and behavioral supports.
Brian is 15 years old and is in his first year of high school. But Brian is not your average teenager. Brian has
Down syndrome and is also a survivor of cancer. At three years old, he was diagnosed with leukemia.
As a result, Brian has gone through chemotherapy and over twenty-five surgeries. Due to Brian’s
developmental disability and having such a challenging childhood, he needs a lot of help with life skills,
social skills, and his overall behavior.

Often times, families are in need of help to support

The In-Home staff who work with Brian engage him in recreational activities in the community. They

with the person and their family to create
personalized goals that support them in reaching
their maximum level of independence. The type
and intensity of services varies depending on each
person’s needs and goals. There are a wide variety of
supports available including but not limited to: care
coordination, menu planning, cooking, grocery
shopping, personal hygiene assistance, laundry,
recreation, social skills, family training and
household chores.
In-Home services are available for people at all
stages in their lives. For Ability Beyond Disability,
these services have a great potential for growth
in the coming years.

“Discover, Learn, Work has so many things that can help kids with getting a job and keeping
a job.
The thing I like most is that the Staff are very helpful in the way that they teach to make things
seem less difficult.
I have learned how to use the internet to get job information off the internet. I have since applied
for many jobs at local stores and restaurants and have learned what to say in an interview.
We have also done some graphic designs that we would do for Ability Beyond Disability projects
and have learned programs such as Photoshop.
The only other thing I can say is that ever since I have been at DLW I have learned that once
you get a job you need to listen to your supervisor and co-workers. You will go far if you work
well with them.”

In fiscal year 2011 we held our 3rd Annual Disability Mentoring Day
Celebration. The event provided job exploration to over 100 local students

schools and help prepare youth and adolescents with disabilities for the
adult world.

Courtney age 24
Like every 24 year old, Courtney dreamed of having her own apartment. She wanted her own
place where she could feel completely independent and have more freedom. Until recently,
Courtney was living with her grandmother but had been working with staff at Ability Beyond
Disability for over a year to find an apartment through the Supported Independent Living (SIL)
program. We worked with Courtney to find funding sources and locate an apartment that would
suit her needs.
A Place of Her Own
Today, Courtney has her own apartment in Danbury, close to many stores and landmarks in the
city. Courtney is excited to cook for herself, invite friends over, and become an adult in the
community. Courtney says she was most excited about being able to decorate her home how
she likes. She bought lamps, posters, furniture and everything necessary to make it her own.

for as long and as often as needed, with the flexibility

Our transportation services help to make that
happen. In fiscal year 2011 we helped over 200

Special Olympics Program. In fiscal year 2011, the
number of athletes grew to over 200 and each
athlete had 13 sports to choose from year-round.

Samantha age 22
Samantha is a 22 year old woman who, although nervous, moved into an apartment in Yonkers, NY
this past year. This was Samantha’s first time away from her parents. “At first I was scared and wanted
to go home a lot,” Samantha says. “But now everyone here is like a family and I love all
the staff.” Samantha says she loves coming home and being able to just talk and hang out with
her roommates.
Samantha attends a Day Program where she strengthens her ties in the community through
recreational activities and volunteer work. She also develops skills necessary for transitioning into
adulthood, such as job readiness skills. Samantha has even started her first paid job. “I sort and clip
coupons for Chinese restaurants throughout New York a few hours a day. It’s really fun, I love it,”
she says.
Samantha can continue her skills development at home, too. Since Samantha has lived in her own
apartment, she has begun taking care of her own responsibilities. “Before, I didn’t do many chores
and now it feels good to do the things I can do on my own,” she says. The staff has taught her daily
living skills such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry. In addition, she has developed skills that are
important for a successful life such as money management and socialization skills.
Samantha describes certain tasks as being difficult because she is in a wheelchair but that she is
looking past these difficulties. She says the staff helps her with the things she cannot do and that
they encourage her to do the best at what she can. Samantha’s plan for the future is to live with her
boyfriend when she graduates from the Yonkers program.
The Start of
a New Life
Residential Supports for Young Adults
Every young adult wants the opportunity to have
their own home, job, and place in the community.
We have found that with life skills instruction,
employment training, and an individualized but
structured residential program, these three things
are possible for young adults with developmental
disabilities.
In December, 2010 we expanded our young
adult residential program by opening a young
adult home in Yonkers, New York.
This new program serves six young men and
women in their early to mid twenties. For the
individuals living there, it is their first time away
from their families.
The program provides 24-hour support for the first
18 months. In that time, the residents will participate
in a training program and obtain the skills needed
to graduate to lower levels of support. The young
adults served by this program participate in a life
skills program where they learn cooking, hygiene,
money management, and all necessary daily
living skills.
Many of the residents attend day or vocational
programs designed specifically for young adults.
They have the opportunity to explore career
opportunities, learn job readiness skills, or
participate in volunteer work.

Hard Work Pays Off
Employment Services
Having a job and earning a paycheck is essential
to independence for any person. Through Ability
Beyond Disability’s employment services, we help
train people to work and then help them secure
and maintain a job.
In fiscal year 2011 our employment services grew
exponentially. Ability Beyond Disability now provides
employment services in the Greater Danbury,
Waterbury, Norwalk, Stamford and Guilford areas
of Connecticut and the Mt. Kisco area of New York.
Ability Beyond Disability supported nearly 900
people through its employment services and helped
secure close to 150 new jobs in the community.
The people receiving employment services from
Ability Beyond Disability have very diverse skills
so they also have very diverse jobs! Some of the
individuals we serve work at local supermarkets
while others work in office type settings. In fiscal
year 2011 we helped someone get a job as a high
school math teacher and someone else as an
accountant. With our employment services,
the possibilities are endless.
14
While the national employment
rate for people with disabilities
remains only at 35%, Ability
Beyond Disability consistently
helps more people with disabilities
find jobs each year. In fact, this
past year, we placed 150 people
into new jobs in the community!
It took 25-year-old Leon over a year of applications, resumes, and interviews but finally he found a job he
loves. Leon is a Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA) at Candlewood Valley Rehab in New Milford, CT. Leon has
worked there for a little over a year now.
When Leon came to Ability Beyond Disability for Employment Services in 2008, he knew that he wanted
to be a CNA and worked with an Employment Specialist on resume building and interviewing skills. After
nearly seven months of classes, Leon received his CNA certification from Med Care Training. “The final
exam was hard,” Leon says. “But I studied a lot.”
Leon wanted to become a CNA because he loves helping people. “My favorite part of the job is helping
patients with their care,” says Leon. Leon has a caseload of 6-10 patients each shift. Many of the patients
Leon cares for have Alzheimer’s disease and he finds working with them to be a very rewarding experience.
Recently, Leon was even awarded Candlewood Valley Rehab’s Employee of The Month!
Leon is a great example of persistence and determination. Before Leon’s success at his current job, he
received a lot of “no’s” from employers and had a job experience that didn’t work out. Leon says that this
never discouraged him. “I just kept trying,” he said.

Aging with Dignity
Aging Supports
At Ability Beyond Disability we are committed
to supporting people through the end of their lives.
People with disabilities deserve the opportunity
to age in place; continuing to live in a familiar
environment, surrounded by people who care
about them and are attuned to their unique needs.
In the 1950’s the average life span of someone
with a disability was just 18 years, but today people
with disabilities are living well into their seventies.
Recognizing that many existing environments do
not sustain individuals as they age, Ability Beyond
Disability has spent 10 years researching the design
of homes for people with special needs. In fiscal year
2011, a best practice resource guide was developed
within the organization.
Staff presented their findings at the 2011 Aging
in America Conference, the largest conference on
aging in America as well as the YAI 2011 International
Conference on Developmental and Learning
Disabilities. Ability Beyond Disability also had
work published on the American Society on Aging,
Housing, Accessibility, and Technology website.
We have also been approved by the state of New York
to create a model aging facility. The first of its kind,
this facility will provide a community-based home for
those who are aging and have intense medical needs.
We have purchased land in Dutchess County, NY and
plans for building are underway.
As we move forward, we will incorporate best
practices in designing fully accessible homes
18
inclusive of smart home technology that will
enable individuals to maintain the highest level
of independence possible while aging in place.
Glenn was just a kid when one unexpected moment changed his life forever. Glenn fell off the back of a
lawn mower. His father performed CPR, which saved his life. His parents knew; however, that as a result
of the brain injury he sustained, their lives would never be the same.
Glenn has lived at an Ability Beyond Disability group home for almost 22 years. Here, he has been able to
build a full life amidst the challenges he faces as a result of his injury.
All you have to do is spend a few minutes with Glenn to learn that he is quite the character! He truly is a
unique individual. Glenn loves to impersonate voices of actors and cartoon characters; he loves to draw
and his favorite activity is swimming.
Glenn’s parents live in Rhode Island, so over the years his housemates and staff have become his second
family. As both Glenn and his parents get older, everyone can rest easy knowing that he will always be
safe and well cared for; surrounded by friends in an environment that will continue to help him lead
a full life.

I chose to build my career with Ability Beyond Disability because of the opportunity to work as a part of, and also

Each year Ability Beyond Disability relies
on philanthropic support to fill the gap
between the cost to provide services
and the funding we receive.
We are proud to say that 91cents of every
dollar we receive goes directly to funding
our programs and services. We recognize
that we could not have grown so significantly over the past 58 years without the
philanthropic support of many individuals
in the communities where we provide
services – and beyond.
Expenditures

Aging - supports to individuals who are aging $1,089,004

Our second annual Hoops for Hope wheelchair
basketball event was held at Danbury High School,
raising awareness of our mission and employment
opportunities for people with disabilities. It was
held during Disability Mentoring Week, recognizing our employment partners and raising
approximately $27,000.
We partnered with Mercedes-Benz of Danbury
to host the very first Ability Beyond Disability,
Mercedes-Benz Dealer Championship Golf
Tournament at Ridgewood Country Club in
Danbury. Over 100 golfers participated and
approximately $100,000 was raised to support
our programs and services.
Employment Training - includes supported $5,266,575

We will focus on the following initiatives:
A Place to Call Home – we will build new homes and renovate our existing homes to ensure that the
people we serve now, and those who will need us in the future, can live in an environment that is best
suited to meet their individual needs.
Aging with Dignity – we will pioneer innovations in care for the aging population so that people with
disabilities can be treated with dignity and respect in an environment that is best suited for their unique
needs, through the end of their lives.
Through these initiatives we are committed to:
• Growing the number of people served by continuing to
expand our services in both Connecticut and New York
• Increasing our highly qualified workforce
• Providing a lifetime of support to the growing population
of people with disabilities at all stages of their lives
As highlighted in this report, Ability Beyond Disability continues to lead the way in providing the highest
quality of services to those who need us. As we grow and evolve we remain focused on the individual;
ensuring that every person has the opportunity to live, work and be a part of our community.
