Spending the winter in Buffalo made me miss the North Carolina climate. I’m looking forward to spending the spring with everyone here at Camp Lake James! Maggie West Hey, my name is Maggie West. I am originally from Durham, North Carolina, and just recently graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Recreation Management and Business. I enjoy the outdoors whether it’s wakeboarding, surfing or snowboarding. I am very excited to be a new member of the Camp Lake David Brandner I graduated from NC State in 2005 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering before beginning my outdoor adventure. After school I traveled around the country teaching outdoor education and recreation. I’ve instructed hang gliding, skiing, rafting, snorkeling, fishing and surfing. I look forward to sharing my love of the great outdoors with everyone over the coming season. A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that is created when the Sun shines on droplets of moisture in the Earth’s atmosphere. They take the form of a multi-colored arc, with red on the outer part of the arch and violet on the inner section of the arch. A popular way to help remember all the colors of a rainbow in order is ROY G. BIV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet). A rainbow does not actually exist at a particular location in the sky. Its position in the sky depends on the observer’s location and the position of the sun. All raindrops refract and reflect sunlight in the same way, but only the light from some raindrops reaches the observer’s eye. This light is what makes the rainbow appear. March is the perfect month to spot a rainbow and don’t forget to look for the pot of gold! NATURE NOTES Rainbows 828-391-6866 | CampLakeJames.com
