Thanks to them, we were able to complete a modest building expansion and renovation, adding two new preschool rooms, updating our kitchen, and redesigning an upstairs meeting room. The new preschool rooms, now known as The West Annex, were donated by the families of Sarah M. Hefelfinger, in her honor. Sarah is a past board president of the YWCA (1952 – 53 and 1955 – 56) and the agency has remained very close to her heart. The newly refurbished kitchen is now ‘Ruthie’s Kitchen,’ in memory of Ruth Kruger George, thanks to her family members – Nancy George and Jimmie and Rosalie George. Nancy is an Honoree Trustee and an incredible friend and supporter. And the meeting room upstairs is called ‘Upward Bound,’ thanks to the families of David E. Lutz, in honor of June’s mother, Virginia Burkholder. June is a past member of the Board of Trustees and a generous supporter of Gather the Women. We are better positioned to deliver programs and services because of the efforts of these life-long friends of the YWCA. To be able to accomplish this in today’s economy can certainly be considered a small miracle! Thanks to GALBRAITH/Pre-Design for doing such a fast, efficient job! Last year, YWCA Carlisle joined forces with other YWCAs across the country and offered our first 5K Race Against Racism in April, putting our mission of the elimination of racism front and center. A great team of volunteers worked diligently on this event, and the result exceeded our expectations – 161 people registered to run or walk and most of them showed up! We were especially pleased to see two ‘Go, Girls, Go’ groups participating in the race, one from Lamberton Middle School and one from Mooreland Elementary. Both groups were enrolled in afterschool programs focused on healthy choices and physical activity – the YWCA wrote grants for both to the Carlisle Area Health & Wellness Foundation, who funded the running clubs. While it was another tight year financially, the agency ended the year very, very close to its projected budget – 99.5% of income and 101.8% of expenses. The additional expense was a totally unexpected $5,000 sewer repair. The YWCA’s Finance Committee and Board of Trustees both continue to monitor finances very closely and are very astute in terms of recommendations for continued fiscal health and strength. So, we move into the new year with determination to continue meeting needs in our community and with the ability to deliver services in a fiscally sound manner. Camille Marion Board President Barbara Kohutiak Executive Director Photo credit: The Sentinel 2 program report the ruth k. and nancy j. george award Created in 2001, this award honors a woman in our community who has made a significant contribution to the YWCA and to the community at large through outstanding volunteer work. At 2011’s Annual Meeting, Nancy Ingram was the recipient of the award. She is pictured being welcomed by past George Award Honorees. The YWCA is very fortunate in having extremely loyal followers. At last year’s Annual Meeting, six past presidents attended, and all of them are still involved in the agency. That kind of commitment provides continuity and a wonderful sense of history. Previous George Award recipients welcome Nancy Ingram to their group as the 2011 award winner. L to R: Nancy Ingram, Bea Williams, Nancy George, Frances Del Duca, Darlene Orr, Ruth Hodge and Sarah Hefelfinger hallmark programs YWCA Hallmark programs focus on two core issues – racial justice and the economic advancement of women. Race still matters in our country and in our community. The March 2012 Annual Census from the Southern Poverty Law Center reports that the number of hate and extremist groups in America continues to increase, driven by ‘economic dislocation, a proliferation of demonizing conspiracy theories, and the changing racial makeup of America.’ The YWCA holds a Youth Leadership Conference every year and brings together students from several school districts to dialogue about race and create action plans for their respective schools. Forty-five students attended last year; of those, 93% could articulate an increased understanding of issues of discrimination and 100% reported that they had learned new skills and could name them. An additional 45 elementary students attended the YW’s 2 nd Annual King’s Kamp – of those, 95% reported that they had learned something new and could say what it was. The YW addresses the needs of economically disenfranchised women through Gather the Women, an economic advancement and personal growth program for women with very limited financial resources. This year, the agency added WINGS (Women in Need of Growth and Support), meeting the needs of young women ready to transition out of foster care, a very vulnerable population. Last year, 58% of the economic goals established were completed and 61% of the personal goals were accomplished. Funding provided by: The Lutz Family, The Stabler Foundation, United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County, corporate gifts, and individual donations Young campers celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. 3 Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Martin Luther King, Jr. program report adult services & wellness The YWCA offers support groups, therapy on a sliding fee scale, and a variety of wellness programs. New Shape of Fitness (NSOF) is geared to women who are overweight/obese. Funded by the Carlisle Area Health & Wellness Foundation, NSOF combines physical exercise with the personal support women need to make lasting changes in their health habits. Partners in Wellness provides complementary therapies to people living with cancer. An Annual Women’s Symposium focuses on the areas of particular interest to women and is planned and implemented by the YWCA, the League of Women Voters – Carlisle Branch, and the American Association of University Women. Funding also provided by: Fee for service, United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County, the Harvest Health 5K, individual donations preschool Children who enter school without the basic social, emotional and intellectual skills they need will have a hard time succeeding – those who receive a quality early childhood experience are more likely to do well in school, graduate high school, and achieve higher educational levels and salaries. At the same time, negative behaviors, including substance abuse and crime, are reduced. YW Preschool Programs enrolled 69 children from 2 to pre-kindergarten, helping them develop kindergarten readiness skills and positive social skills. Early Start Community Preschool reaches children from families who would otherwise not be able to afford an early childhood experience. Of the 15 children who attended all year, 93% showed improvement in kindergarten readiness and 100% demonstrated improved social skills. Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Carlisle, all of these children were given three books to take home, part of Kiwanis’ commitment to young children. Funding also provided by: Fee for service, Success by Six Scholarship Organization, United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County, and Carlisle Area Health & Wellness Foundation 4 program report youth Girl Power reached 89 middle and high school girls in a program designed to promote resiliency, connection, and academic achievement. 100% of the girls who returned end of the year surveys indicated that they had gained increased knowledge of issues that can impact their lives. Among the issues addressed were: respect & disrespect, money management (thanks to corporate sponsor Cornerstone Federal Credit Union), racism, healthy relationships, substance abuse, and anger. Of the surveys returned, 97% of the girls reported improvement in their decision making and could articulate how. Grandview and Memorial Park Afterschool Homework Clubs served 36 students last year. 96% of all assigned homework was completed on days the clubs met; 23% of the students made the Honor Roll; 41% had overall good report cards (some A’s, B’s or G’s and S’s). Young Wonders Summer Day Camp serves 40 elementary children per week for 12 weeks in the summer. It includes field trips, swimming at the Carlisle Community Pool, and lots of fun and recreational activities for participants. YWCA Carlisle said a very sad farewell to Youth Director Kristen TroutRoebuck, who did a remarkable job while here, and is now home raising young William. We welcomed new Youth Director Amy Lowther, who served an internship at the YWCA a few years ago and always thought this would be her dream job. Sometimes, dreams do come true! Funding also provided by: Housing Authority of Cumberland County, Kiwanis Club of Carlisle, Progress Education Foundation, Rotary Club of Carlisle, Evening for the Children Gala, United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County, and individual donations. sexual assault/rape crisis services SA/RCS answered 805 Hotline calls last year, provided free and confidential counseling to 485 victims, and presented ageappropriate prevention/education programs to 7,235 students in schools throughout Cumberland County. YWCA Carlisle’s program has been lauded by funders for its fine volunteer corps – 34 people gave significant amounts of time last year to support this program, usually by serving as well-trained Hotline Volunteers. RCS welcomed new staff member Melissa Rosenberger, who established a support group for young male victims of sexual assault for the first time. Thanks to corporate sponsor CenturyLink, the staff presented four sessions of Internet Safety in Carlisle Area School District, helping 20 parents learn strategies for protecting their children. A highlight of the year remains GIRLZ Camp, a week of summer healing and fun for adolescent victims of sexual assault, funded by the ZONTA Club. Staff continued to work with Dickinson College as a member of their Coordinated Community Response Team.
