Cyprus Energy Agency Ecodriving & Eco friendly vehicles Ecodriving Definition ¾ A new driving culture that contributes to reduce the fuel consumption and the gas emissions which pollute the environment, such as CO2 . ¾ Ecodriving improves road safety ¾ Protects the environment and reduces pollution Ecodriving Ecodriving : • Economic driving • Eco Friendly driving • Safe driving Ecodriving What is NOT Ecodriving? Extremely slow driving!! …Can cause traffic congestion!! …Can cause car crashes especially in highways Ecodriving 9How can you be Ecodrivers? By following some car driving and maintenance tips. 9 What is the benefit on fuel reduction and on CO2 emissions? A typical Ecodriver can reduce his fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 15%. E.g. If someone pays 1500 euro annually in fuels, by implementing ecodriving tips he will benefit 225 euro! 1 Tips for Ecodriving First tip to be Ecodrivers is to change habits and believe that through Ecodriving we can: Reduce fuel consumption by approximately 15% and Reduce gas emissions by approximately 15% 2 Tips for Ecodriving Prefer driving with a steady speed Energy consumption with a steady speed is less than with continuous accelerations and braking. 9 Accelerate and brake smoothly Tips for Ecodriving Keep steady speed in highway road Use Cruise Control especially in autocars and save up to 10% fuels. Avoid extremely high speeds which reduce the road safety and increase the car emissions and fuel consumption. 3 Tips for Ecodriving Anticipate Traffic Flow and keep the appropriate distance Especially at: Traffic Lights Pedestrian crossings Highway exits Road works 9Safety 9Fuel saving 9Prevent vehicle damages 4 Tips for Ecodriving Drive at the optimum efficiency point of the engine ¾Engine must operate at the optimum RPM area (maximum torque) ¾Some vehicles indicate on the panel the optimum RPM area which has the optimum fuel efficiency ¾Avoid very high or very low RPM 5 Tips for Ecodriving Switch off the engine at short stops Switch off the vehicle for short stops. With the engine in operation at short stops there is an important fuel consumption and CO2. This consumption is unnecessary and should be avoided e.g. At a visit to ATM Don’t switching off the engine when the stop lasts less than one minute Tips for Ecodriving Start/Stop or Idle‐stop system Shuts down automatically the engine at stops Restarts the engine automatically ¾ Traffic lights ¾ Traffic jams ¾ Stops 9About 4% fuel saving 9CO2 emissions reduction 6 Tips for Ecodriving Don’t warm up your vehicle. This was a necessity for vehicles of older technology. Warm up the engine progressively and save energy and fuels. 7 Tips for Ecodriving Vehicle cooling ¾At low speeds (less than 65km/h) the air resistance is very low and open windows are recommended instead of air conditioning. Using open windows you will save up to 1lt / 100km. ¾ At higher speeds open windows have the same effect as air conditioners because of the increase in the air resistance. So, air conditioners are preferred but the best solution is to use the air vents, without air conditioning. We prefer the recycled air mode of the vehicle which recycles the already cool internal air instead of cooling continually the hot external air. 8 Tips for Ecodriving Keep your vehicle as much cool as you can during summer months At Cyprus inside of an exposed to the sun car, temperatures can reach even more than 50οC !! ¾ In this case, it will be required a lot of energy for the cooling of the interior of the car!! Tips for Ecodriving ¾ Car shading Tips for Ecodriving 9 Tips for Ecodriving Check the tire pressure each month ¾ Vehicle safety ¾ Fuel saving If tire pressure is lower than the appropriate, this increases the fuel consumption while the bracket resistance increases between tire and road. Tips for Ecodriving Fuel consumption Vs tire pressure 10 Tips for Ecodriving Select eco friendly tires ¾These tires have low rolling resistance ¾20%‐30% of the fuel consumption is due on the tires rolling resistance!! Advantages • Less consumption at about 0,2lt per 100 km • Less CO2 emissions(15‐20 gr/km) • Longer life • Less noise levels Tips for Ecodriving Indicative examples 195/65R15 CINTURATO P6 91V ECO Indicative price for delivery : 61 € Indicative price for implementation: 73 € 195/65R15 ENERGY SAVER Indicative price for delivery : 75€ Indicative price for implementation: 84€ (https://www.tyrescy.com) 11 Tips for Ecodriving Remove all the unnecessary weights of the vehicle Extra weight = Extra fuel consumption Remove roof racks and other bicycle, ski or luggage racks. A roof rack increases the air resistance of the vehicle. ¾It can increase the fuel consumption up to 0,5 lt /100km ¾ We don’t use the vehicle as a store 12 Tips for Ecodriving Keep your car well maintained • Prevent damages • Save fuels and money 9Track yours vehicle electronic indicators 9 Frequently oil change. Use of the right oils 9 Replace the worn accessories 9 Regular services 13 Tips for Ecodriving Select the optimum route 9 We find out the most economic route for our transporting 9This selection must be according to the route’s length and its traffic congestion. Routes with high traffic congestion are not recommended!
