MINA
Employed Since 2014 – Birthday December 26th
My name is Mina Jarrahi and I am an Iranian-American, born in Germany and raised in
San Francisco, CA. I attended San Francisco State University for my B.A. in Child and
Adolescent Development as well as for my M.A. in Early Childhood Education. Upon
receiving my master’s degree in 2009, I got married and moved to Syracuse, N.Y. where my
husband was working towards his Ph.D. After he graduated, we moved to North Carolina
for his job at UNC Chapel Hill.
I have seven years of experience volunteering and working as a substitute preschool teacher
at City College of San Francisco's four campus child care centers. I have always loved
working with young children because seeing their young minds develop is very gratifying
work. I feel I have the qualities that are a must to be a great teacher; patience, empathy,
passionate, caring, and the ability to promote feelings of trust and security. I believe that
children learn through play and we as teachers must provide a safe atmosphere that
promotes learning. Play shapes how children make sense of their worlds, how they learn
thinking skills, and how they acquire language.

RACHEL
Employed Since 1997 – Birthday August 29th
Hi! My name is Rachel Fearrington and I’ve been teaching for 28 years. I have been
employed at the University Childcare Center for 18 years. I enjoy working with children
and building partnerships with their families. For the past 5 years, I was able to follow my
class from infants all the way to graduating from preschool. The time with these families
was awesome! We’ve become a family and I have built an unbreakable bond.
My philosophy about working with children is that children learn through play and by
communicating with teachers and classmates. The teachers guide and direct the children
by introducing fun and creative experiences for them to enjoy. The relationship that a
teacher and a child form is very important. The child feels safe, secure and at home when
that bond is met. Teachers and parents have to work together to keep communication open
so that each individual child’s needs are met.
I’m currently working on obtaining my Associate’s Degree in Child Development and will
complete the program by the end of the year. I received my North Carolina Early Childhood
Credential Certificate in 1998, Early Childhood Associate Option in 2000. I also have 40
credit hours from Durham Tech and Mt. Olive College.

years with my two children. We all lived in Algeria before moving to the U.S. In Algeria, I

Education and Pedagogical methods. Here, in the US, I have also taken several more Early
Childhood courses. I would describe the years I have worked in childcare as my best. It is a
wonderful environment and I enjoy being around children and seeing them grow up.
I believe that in order for a child to grow successfully, they must be followed throughout
their growth. They should learn through the encouragement and kindness of those that
surrounded them. I teach children by trying to be an example for them. Also the children
should be given time for fun so that they can have happy memories at the end of the day.

Memorial Nursery School in Rochester, MN.
I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs secure, caring and stimulating
atmosphere, in which she or he can grow and mature physically, emotionally, intellectually
and socially. By providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites
sharing of ideas one can help children meet their fullest potential. It is my desire, as an
educator, to act as a guide, allowing the youngster’s natural curiosity to direct his/hers
learning while promoting respect for other people and all things around. I strongly believe
that learning outdoors, experiencing the wonders, exploring and discovering nature is very
important in a life of a child.
For myself, teaching provides an opportunity for continuous learning and growth. My goal
as an educator is to instill that love of life-long learning in my students along with
stimulating their own desire to experience and explore the utmost beauty of the natural

Hi, I’m Evan Hirasawa. I have a B.F.A. and Art Teaching Certificate from the
Massachusetts College of Art. I studied at the Corcoran School of Art and hold a Masters in
Education Degree with a focus on the Creative Arts in Learning from Lesley College. My
travels to Japan have given me a broader outlook on bringing multiculturalism to the arts.
Working with children is process oriented for me. I especially love watching and inspiring
children to grow creatively. For me, learning occurs when children feel nurtured, have a
natural sense of curiosity and are having fun at the same time.

TOYIA
Employed Since 1998 – Birthday December 22nd
My name is Toyia Compton-Smith. I have been an Early Child Educator for 13 years. My
journey with Victory Village started in 1998. I had the pleasure of being one of the first
teachers to work in the new building. In 2002, I returned to VVDCC. The joy of educating
and nurturing young children prompted me to pursue an education in Early Child Care.
Thus far, I have completed credentials I & II and several credit hours.
My philosophy about working with children is that early child care is the foundation of
learning. Learning should be nurturing and stimulating. Education should be equal for all
children no matter their ethnicity, gender, ability, or financial status. To be able to shape
and mold young minds is a great reward, and I know that there is also a great reward to
come. Our children are our future!

Executive Director
JEANNE
Employed Since 2004 – Birthday October 27th
My name is Jeanne Wakefield. I came to The University Child Care Center as the
Executive Director in December of 2004. Before that, I owned and operated another quality
childcare program for almost 20 years. I have a B.S. in Business Administration,
Management & Organizational Development and a Master’s Degree in Education (Birth –
Kindergarten).
I grew up on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and speak fluent Spanish. I have a special
interest and affection for language and culture. I do trainings in the local child care
community on working with families of diverse cultures, and with Dual Language Learners.
I am also a trainer for the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS) which is
the evaluation tool used statewide to measure child care quality. I am a Mentor
Director/Coach for the Early Childhood Directors Leadership Institute (ECDLI).
I believe that children learn best through exploration and creative, hands-on play in
settings that are rich with learning opportunities. I love children’s books and children’s
art, as well as nature, gardening and science activities for children. I also think that
children learn best in an environment where they feel accepted, valued and loved. This
allows them to feel secure enough to take chances and try new things. I think of child care
as serving a role similar to the extended family. When the children arrive at school each
day, I think it is wonderful that they are greeted lovingly by a community of caregivers who
truly care about them.
Even though our program is very successful, I never stop looking for ways to help make it
better. The field of Early Childhood Education is ever growing, with more and more
research and understanding about how children learn and grow. I expect our program to
be cutting-edge and forward-moving, always striving to provide the very best learning
opportunities for the children in our care and understanding.

DESIREE’
Employed Since 2015 – Birthday April 8th
My name is Desiree Wiley and I reside in Graham, N.C. I knew at an early age that I
wanted to be an educator. I am a 2009 graduate of The University of North Carolina at
Greensboro. There I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a
concentration in Global Studies. I currently hold a North Carolina Teaching License in
grades K-6. I have been working with children and families for 6 years through Orange
County Schools and Orange County Head Start. During my time, I have had the
opportunity to serve as a preschool teacher, Education Coordinator Assistant, mentor, and
trainer to name a few. I continued my education at East Carolina University to add BirthKindergarten to my teaching license in 2011. I am currently enrolled at Alamance
Community College to obtain my Administration credentials for the fall semester.
My philosophy about working with children is a student-centered one. I believe children
should be active participants in their education, which will encourage them to be life-long
learners. Allowing students to follow their interests (learning through play), while guiding
them through the stages of development is essential. This allows students to take
ownership of their education. I also believe everything a child learns can be connected
somehow to their everyday life. Children should be given opportunities to relate their
knowledge and critical thinking skills to life outside of the classroom walls. I believe parents
are a child’s first and most important teacher. My philosophy has been molded by my
experiences and will continue to evolve as I gain more experiences here at Victory Village.

Hi! My name is Kerry Hagner. I have been volunteering at Victory Village for the past six
years. I like coming to help and to play with the children. When I am not volunteering, I
love to go on the internet, watch TV and movies and talk on the phone with my friends.
MICHAEL
My name is Michael Harrison Nager. I come to Victory Village each week to read to the
preschool children. Reading books and writing short stories are my favorite things to do.
Every Sunday I go to the Chapel Hill Public Library. When I save enough money, I buy my
own books. Reading books helps me to create my own stories. Someday I would like to be
an author & write children’s books.
