A Prayer for Holy Week
Lord Jesus Christ,
in this sacred and solemn week
when we see again
the depth and mystery of your redeeming love,
help us to follow where you go,
to stop where you stumble,
to listen when you cry,
to hurt as you suffer,
to bow our heads in sorrow as you die,
so that, when you are raised to life again,
we may share in your endless joy. Amen.

Stations of the Cross
On Wednesday the whole school had the opportunity to reflect
on the Stations of the Cross as part of our observance of the
season of Lent.
In preparation for Holy Week and Easter all year groups listened
as students and staff read a reflection for each Station. All the
readings counsel us to use Lent as a reflective time when we
examine our own behaviour and try to improve what we need to.
It was good to see students taking the opportunity to be quiet and
thoughtful.
Thanks to everyone who read.
Lord, may today be a time of renewal and refreshment;
a time to know your gracious mercy and loving
forgiveness, a time to deepen my prayer which draws
me ever closer to you the Father of Mercy, the God of
all comfort.
Rachel would like to thank Fr Dave, Angela, Pete,
Eleanor, Bea, Hannah, Jack, Lewis, Paige, Ruth, Shauna,
Sophie and Theo for spoiling us at The Briars! Year 9

Lent.

Year 9 Briars retreat
Mr Thomson writes:
On the 07 – 09 March our Chaplain
Rachel, Miss McCready, Mr Riley, Mr
Long, Mr Timms and myself led a trip to
the Briars alongside 62 pupils. The theme
of the week was ‘Decisions have
Consequences’.
We arrived after school on the Monday to
an up-beat Briars Team and everyone
was excited to be in a room with their
friends. The pupils engaged in a ‘channel
surfing’ task; enjoyed the Tuck Shop and
evening meal and before we knew it, it
was ‘Night Prayer’ and time for bed
(Thank the Lord!).
On Tuesday the pupils enjoyed a session
based on ‘Social Networking’ and
internet safety/being yourself. They then produced ‘One minute Movies’ and ended the day
with a ‘Prayer Journey’.
By Wednesday, the staff were
delighted to see that the pupils were
getting very tired, which in turn made
them very quiet. The day was spent
carrying out a long walk in the
Derbyshire Dales and ended with a
Reconciliation Service, reminding
everyone of the true meaning of The
Briars residential centre.
On Thursday the pupils carried out a session based on Fairtrade, titled ‘The Factory Game’. This
game made everyone realise
how difficult working conditions
are for some people and was
very thought provoking. The day
ended with Mass, delivered by
Father David Cain; some
delightful acts in the Talent
Show (or lack of talent in some
cases) and a traditional ‘Briars
Disco’.
Before we knew it, Friday was
upon us and the trip came to an
abrupt end. We had our final
liturgy and waved a tearful goodbye to the Briars Team at Crich. The trip was amazing and
hopefully taught the young people a lot about their faith and themselves.

Year 8 Match Report vs Long Eaton
15.03.16
On Tuesday afternoon, the Year 8 boys travelled to Long Eaton School and were
determined to maintain their fantastic record, which has seen them win every
game so far.
Again, the game started very well for Saint John, dominating possession early on
and creating a couple of opportunities. Jorge Kitchen fired over from 25 yards
out but the signs were promising.
James McElwee and Theo Shelton were
proving difficult to handle for Long Eaton with
their direct running and crosses into the box.
And time eventually told. A superb through
ball from Liam Hughes found Theo Shelton on
the left wing who used his pace to beat the
defence and bent the ball past the keeper at
his near post. HT St John 1-0 Long Eaton.
The second half continued in the same fashion
as the first. Jorge Kitchen and Oliver Jasper were winning every battle in the
middle of the park and wouldn’t allow Long Eaton out of their half. At the back,
Oliver Wheeldon, Luke Wilson, Luke Gibbons and Rhys Windridge didn’t give
Long Eaton a sniff of a chance. Their high work rate and pressuring of the ball
meant Long Eaton couldn’t find a rhythm.
With Saint John playing well, it was only a matter of time before they found that
crucial second goal. And it came when James McElwee skilfully flicked the ball
into the path of Nick Bradley who volleyed home in to the top right-hand corner
of the goal. St John 2-0 Long Eaton. Saint John managed to see the game off
with relative ease, which ensured their 100% winning record continued! FT St
John 2-0 Long Eaton.
An amazing performance from the team (and the best of the season so far) who
yet again never fail to impress everybody. Congratulations from Mr Harris go to:
Chris Stratford, Oliver Wheeldon, Luke Gibbons, Alex Leatherland, Rhys
Windridge, Ryan Fee, Luke Wilson, Liam Hughes, Jorge Kitchen, Oliver Jasper,
James McElwee, Theo Shelton and Nick Bradley.

Tiger!
As I stroll through the deep, dark night
My orange and black fur burning bright,
The cold gloomy air is still all around me,
As if time has stopped still.
Tiger!
Tiger, Tiger
Burning bright
Eyes ablaze in the night.
The Tiger is coming
As I stroll through the mysterious night
The sun slowly rising showing some light
I look up to see my prey
Peacefully sleeping, waiting for day.
As it meets the horizon’s gaze,
The birds retreat
Animals escape
The Tiger is coming.
I feel my stomach rumble
Begging me for food
I approach my prey
Smiling, as I make my way.
The leaves crunch with every step
His claws stretched out
As he silently creeps
The Tiger is coming
My heart is thumping
As adrenaline rushes through me
My head starts to spin
As I pounce at my prey…
The antelope tangled in the thorns
Blood dripping from his horns
As his family watch and mourn
The Tiger has come.
