Simple Sentence Notes
 Every simple sentence has only one subject and predicate that form a complete thought.
Example Sentence: My room smells like fish.
 Complete Subject- part of the sentence that tells us who or what the sentence is about.
The above sentence’s subject is “my room”
 Complete Predicate- part of the sentence that tells you something about the subject. (such as:
what the subject is, what it’s like, what it does, what it has, and many others)
The above sentence’s predicate is “smells like fish”
 Simple Subject- a noun or a pronoun.
In the example sentence it is “room” not “my room”
 Simple Predicate- the verb in the sentence.
In the example sentence it is “smells” not “smells like fish”
Example Sentence: Moby fishes in the neighbor’s pond.
Simple Subject: Moby
Simple Predicate: fishes

Compound sentence- A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by:

a comma and then a coordinating conjunction OR

a semicolon (;)
Coordinating Conjunctions- an easy way to remember the coordinating conjunctions is:
F.A.N.B.O.Y.S.
F or- to show cause and effect
A nd- to add information
N or- to show 2 statements that are negative
B ut- to show a contrast of information
O r- to show 2 alternatives, one is true
Y et- to show a contrast of information
S o- to show a consequence
EXAMPLES:
FANBOYS- She did not do well on the test , for she did not study last night.
SEMICOLON- She did not do well on the test ; she did not study last night.
FANBOYS- Missy wants vanilla cake for her birthday , and she wants to have sprinkles on top.
SEMICOLON- Missy wants vanilla cake for her birthday ; she wants to have sprinkles on top.
FANBOYS- Kyle hates pickles , nor does he like tomatoes.
SEMICOLON- Kyle hates pickles ; does he like tomatoes.
FANBOYS- I really enjoyed playing soccer , but lately I like to play basketball.
SEMICOLON- I really enjoyed playing soccer ; lately I like to play basketball.
FANBOYS- I can go to the zoo , or I can go to Six Flags this weekend.
