Key Note Speech by Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau
Research Universities: Leveraging Global Talent
In recent years there has been a significant rise in the global mobility of students, faculty, and
researchers. Today, more than any other time in history, top talent is internationally-minded and
entrepreneurial in spirit. At the same time, great research universities are evolving into global
universities by diversifying their student bodies and faculty, and creating more opportunities for
international engagement and collaboration. These forces for change lead to increased global
competition for top talent. As a result, research universities must adapt their strategies for the
recruitment and development of students, faculty, and university leadership.
In his talk, Dr. Chameau will reflect on his experiences in attracting and nurturing top talent while in
leadership at Georgia Tech, Caltech, and now King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in
Saudi Arabia. Dr. Chameau will share ideas for universities seeking to leverage the opportunities
presented by an increasingly international pool of talent. He will also offer his perspective on the role
of strategic recruitment in creating an academic ecosystem that has both local and global impact.
