Ever wondered what makes that “popping” sound? The “cracking” or “popping” noise associated with chiropractic adjustments is NOT the sound of bones cracking or breaking. It is the same sound that is made when someone “cracks” their knuckles. It is simply the formation of gas due to negative pressure in the air tight/fluid filled joint when the joint is separated. the joint opens up and the gas is released. When a joint opens up, it’s like pulling apart two surfaces that have been stuck together by a sticky substance – when they release, you may hear a pop. It’s very similar to the release of gas bubbles when you pop the cork from a champagne bottle, and just as enjoyable in it’s after effects! The actual pop is called a cavitation, and it’s the release of gas that makes the popping sound. The joints of the spine are called synovial joints and they produce a fluid called synovial fluid. Synovial fluid lubricates the joint (for movement) and nourishes it. The by-products formed in the production of synovial fluid are gasses – oxygen, nitrogen and CO2. When an adjustment is delivered, A popping joint is not an indicator on whether an adjustment has been successful or not and not all chiropractic adjusting techniques produce this noise. In fact, some adjusting techniques use little force and therefore produce no noise at all. Your Chiropractor is highly trained in many different techniques to allow them the flexibility to select the most appropriate one for you. Healthy Habits of Healthy People Human Interaction Let’s face it - life can get so busy and cluttered that we often forget to make time for play and joy. Everyone needs to feel loved and supported. Conversation, sharing, being in touch with others who have active, involved lives gives our lives purpose. Sharing with friends helps multiply the joys and divide the sorrows. Positive Mental Attitude Healthy people are more optimistic than unhealthy people. They don’t waste time and energy complaining. They know that a positive mental attitude goes a long way toward promoting other healthy behaviours in their lives. Optimal Fuel mood or banishing black circles. Adequate sleep is Whether it’s intuition or a good sense of clean foods versus processed foods, healthy people simply eat healthier. They avoid fad diets and foods labelled as “fat free” or “low fat.” Instead, they enjoy foods that are whole, clean and full of nutrients. Healthy people also ensure they are drinking enough water. Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60% of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. To determine a good general guideline for normal hydration, establish your body weight in kilos, multiply it by 0.033 and drink that many litres of water each day. a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. Regular Exercise The old saying, move it or lose it, holds true when it comes to the health of the human body. Joints seize up when they’re not mobilised, muscles break down when they’re not used and lungs hold less oxygen when they’re not opened up. Healthy people are not sedentary, they’re active. They walk, they bend and they breath deeply. Exercise doesn’t have to be a formal activity, you just have to move! Adequate Sleep Getting a blend of cardiovascular training (for the You might feel “fine” on five hours of sleep, but your body disagrees! If you want to be truly healthy, allowing your body to repair after a long day of breaking down, you need some shut eye. Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your heart and lungs), strength training (for the muscles and bones) and flexibility (for the tendons and joints) will keep your body young, minimise the risk of many lifestyle diseases, boost your self-esteem and pump your body full of energy. Laughter really is great medicine…especially when it comes to managing stress. Laughter decreases the release of stress hormones, while increasing the release of ‘feel-good’ endorphins. Laughter has also been shown to increase our body’s natural killer cells and antibodies that act as a line of defence against foreign substances that might otherwise impact our immune system. Fully Functional Nerve System To be truly healthy your nerve system needs to be free from the interference of vertebral subluxation (spinal misalignments), so that your brain is able to co-ordinate and regulate the function of every cell in your body. Just as your body requires the fabulous building blocks in the form of healthy fuel, optimal movement, a great mind-set and quality sleep, it also requires your brain to be communicating with your body to the best of its ability, which it does via the nervous system. Keep your nerve system free of interference with regular Chiropractic care so you too can enjoy the benefits of true health. 3. The school year has started at great speed as per usual and many parents are already struggling to keep up with the myriad of events that may be on the horizon….school fairs, day trips, sports events, not to mention school camp! There’s a lot to take in as the term gets going and this is even more so for the children. Constant stimulation to allow them to learn and grow is so important…. but what if they’re unable to process the information their system is receiving? How will this affect their learning ability? The role of a healthy spine goes far beyond just bones and simple structure. Recent research is indicating that the spine and nerve system play an important role in learning, concentration and health both in children and adults. When our spines stop moving correctly it sets up negative feedback systems which can affect the function of the motor-cerebellar-vestibular system. This can impact: • The ability to sit still • Concentration span • The ability to integrate new information A recent study, published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research (JVSR), suggests that Chiropractic care may offer significant benefits to children, particularly those suffering from learning disabilities and dyslexia. Learning disorders and dyslexia affect between three and ten percent of schoolaged children in the United Sates. Individuals with these disorders often suffer from low self-esteem, diminished motivation, loss of interest in school and problems in social functioning, as well as academic difficulties. It is a problem that can start early in life and if not recognised, may lead to a lifetime of unnecessary struggle. Learning disorders and dyslexia are now being more commonly recognised as a neurological developmental disorder. Children suffering from those problems have parts of their brain that are either not functioning adequately or are somehow delayed in their development. This affects the ability of the brain to coordinate and integrate the various sensory information, as well as having an impact on the processing speed of the brain. If the daily physical stresses of life cause misalignments in the spine (vertebral subluxations) the brain is not adequately stimulated. This can therefore lead to problems throughout the entire body due to a lack of organisation and decrease in the vital information the body needs to receive. Chiropractic can improve the function of the spine and stimulate nerve pathways to the brain, allowing the necessary brain functions required for learning to take place. By removing the stress to their central nervous system caused by vertebral subluxation your child will be able to reach their full potential. Subluxations are usually easily correctable at a young age and adjusting babies & children is very gentle and safe. Adjustments are made with a very light pressure - in fact, the same amount of pressure as you would use touching your eyeball! All children benefit greatly from having regular chiropractic checks, regardless of whether they have obvious symptoms or not. Reducing nerve interference keeps children healthier as they grow and develop. Remember - as parents the decision is yours, but the benefits are theirs! Tick Tock, Tick Tock 7. Injuries; 8. Synovial. Summer is well and truly here! That is great news but often signals an increase in accidents. Hot temperatures and more time outdoors, perhaps unsupervised, can put kids’ at risk, leading to more injuries at this time of year. Obviously, parents can’t spend the entire summer worrying about the safety of their youngsters. The best defence is a good offense - along with some good, old fashioned common sense as most accidents can be prevented. The most obvious hidden dangers in summer are heat-related and include heat stroke, getting burned on hot playground equipment or barbecues/smokers, and sunburn. Keep kids well-hydrated, take frequent breaks when playing outside, regularly apply sunscreen and never leave a child in a hot car. Many families try to escape the summer heat in a pool or nearby beach or lake. To keep your kids safe around the water be sure to fence your pool with a self-closing/selflatching gate and ALWAYS supervise your kids around water, even if they know how to swim. During the summer months, kids have more time to explore so don’t forget about things like cleaning supplies, garden poisons, sharp objects, stairs, electrical outlets and machinery. Children should never be allowed near an area when lawn mowers are being used. The blades can flick rocks and twigs that can hurt a child several metres away. There are also creatures lurking in the grass - a massive army of flying, crawling, biting, stinging insects out there just waiting for some unsuspecting person to cross their path! Last on the list of summer accidents are those that take place on bikes, skateboards, skates, and playground equipment. The best advice for kids who ride anything is to wear a safety helmet and protective pads on their knees and elbows. While the tips above may be helpful, accidents still happen. Don’t forget that actions taken in the first few minutes following an accident can be critical, and may help avoid complications later. Every home should have a fully equipped First Aid kit and family members should all know the principles of emergency care. Remember...family safety is no accident so this summer have fun, but be safe! answers to crossword Stay Safe this Summer Down: 1. Health; 3. Cavitation; Chiropractic care can help you develop healthy responses to stress and allow you to live a more balanced, healthier lifestyle. In this increasingly busy and stressful world, it is vital to ensure your body is functioning optimally so it can deal with anything life delivers. Make sure you have your spine checked regularly and instead of simply surviving, you’ll be thriving!! 4. Exercise; 5. Stress. The modern world we live in is becoming increasingly complex, and there are numerous demands on our time and attention. We are now often working longer hours, we’re exposed to more challenging situations and often more is expected of us. Our lives are becoming more stressful than ever before as we try to cram more in to every minute of our already busy lives. Because of this, our bodies can become overloaded and eventually struggle to cope, leading to decreased function and poor health. When you add Chiropractic care to your health care routine, you give yourself an amazing opportunity to help your body “re-set” itself, both physically and mentally. When your spine is functioning correctly, the “circuit” is connected which means full communication is being both sent and received by your body allowing you to function at your absolute best. This is a natural way to increase and maintain health, as well as help you cope with the normal stresses of day-to-day life. Across: 2. Interaction; 6. Water; Christmas has been and gone, New Year’s Eve seems like it was just yesterday but already those precious days spent relaxing on the beach are nothing but a distant memory. Your summer holiday is over and you have hit reality with a thud as you venture back to work and routine. Already the first few months of the year are over and as the tension begins to build in your shoulders you wonder how it all seems to be speeding by so quickly. HELLO TO YOU ALL. Well here we are, autumn 2014 I tend to like the even years. They not only tend to produce sensational examples of the Penfolds Grand Hermitage wines but they also seem to be better balanced years. Maybe it’s because they have a numerical evenness about them that the odd years lack. I suppose that is why they call them the “odd” years. However no matter what year it is, it is what we do with the gift of time that is really important. Now some clinic news: Remember that if you are eligible for EPC then the start of the new calendar year also heralds the start of when you can again apply for these 5 complementary treatments. However, you need to see your doctor for this. He will then give you a referral, which you can then bring to us. Also many health funds revert back to full benefits at the beginning of the calendar year. However just double check this as some run from the start to the finish of the financial year, while others tend to run from the time when you joined up. With the start of the school year comes also the problem of properly packed and adjusted school bags. Remember the bag should not weigh more than the child itself! Indeed it should weigh approximately 10% of the child’s weight. The clinics do offer a complementary school bag assessment so feel free to drop in to get your child’s back and backpack checked. I will this year celebrate my 30th year as a chiropractor. It has been an exciting journey and along the way I have been privileged to meet many wonderful and inspiring people. Many things have also changed in this time, with the greatest one being how much better informed people are about their health. I look forward to serving the community for many years to come. So why is it important to get your spine checked? As you have heard me say in the past: “a healthy spine will give you a healthy body.” Getting regular checks will enable the chiropractor to pick up those small problems before they become larger more complicated problems. Don’t wait for the passage of time to cause further deterioration to your bodies, make it a habit to come in for a check up, and make each year a great 1998 Penfolds Grange Hermitage year.
