30.09.2011 EDITORIAL We all want a city that’s less polluted, with less noise and less smells. Autolib’ is an opportunity to change the city with 100% electric cars that do not generate any CO2 emissions, nor noise. For thirty years now our group has been the world’s leading producer of components for capacitors used to stock electricity. From this starting point, we have managed to develop the technology of solid-state battery. The LMP battery (Lithium Metal Polymer) is the only one that provides outstanding safety and autonomy and give cars and buses optimal capacity. This battery can store five times more energy than a traditional battery and will meet the challenges of energy in the future. Our duty, as industrials, is to break new grounds, which is why I wished to dedicate our know-how to a vast social programme: autolib’. Faced with many renowned competitors, we were lucky to won the bid of La Ville de Paris and its 45 neighbouring communes. 44 communes in the Paris metropolitan area voted unanimously for our car. The inhabitants of Paris and its region, as well as tourists visiting Paris will be able to use the BlueCar, the new generation of electric cars. It’s a new way of considering the city and the means of transport for millions of people. This electric car regroups every quality that each user would want: it’s quiet, odourless, very confortable and very accessible in terms of practicality as well as economically. We placed the human element at the centre of this new technology. (...) press kit | 2 | (...) To accompany the Franciliens nearly 1,500 people will answer questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the phone or on the field. I am especially moved by its first entry into service to the general public. From now on, we must work together so this gamble on the future is successful; for a quieter city, a city less polluted, more liveable for all. The project Autolib will have ecologic and economic repercussions all over the Ile de France region. In some way, we each have in our hands a key to the success of the project. We all have the opportunity to change our city and to preserve the environment. All of us have better things to do than to worry about the future. We have to invent it, to create it, to prepare it for future generations. The desire to move on for the well being of all people starts when a man asks himself « what can I do? » instead of wondering « what will happen? » . Vincent BOLLORÉ Chairman of the Bolloré Group press kit | 3 | WITH AUTOLIB’ Residents of Paris and the 45 surrounding towns are looking for a new lease on life and more fluid traffic to give the region around Paris a breath of fresh air and make it a more pleasant place to live and work. This all adds up not only to less pollution but also less congestion, less stress for all. Autolib, a big idea that can change urban living. press kit | 5 | Autolib’ is the first public service for shared electric cars to be developed on the scale of a major European city. A transport transformation will change the way we look at cities. AUTOLIB’ A SERVICE UNIQUE IN THE WORLD and a real global first. > the bluecar : The Bluecar, which is 100 % electric, runs on a 100 % recyclable lmp (Lithium Metal Polymer) battery with a life expectancy of 200,000 kilometres or 5 times the circumference of the Earth. Composed of non-polluting materials it stores five times more energy than a traditional battery of the same weight. Highly resistant to variations in temperature, it is very reliable and requires no maintenance. The Bluecar is also a real 4-person car, a clever combination of elegance and technology conceived by the Bolloré group, designed by Pininfarina and produced on an industrial scale by Cecomp. Powerful yet lightweight, its charm lies in its reactivity, the fact that it is a pleasure to drive, its spacious, luminous interior and the onboard PC which is constantly connected to the Operations Centre. The Bluecar also means the best of technology: thanks to the onboard PC and GPS, users will have access to all the information they need (range and directions) and can be directed and interact with an operator if necessary. But it is also, above all, the very core of the autolib’ project, which has seen the light of day thanks to the Bolloré group. As the leading global producer of complete electric components for condensers the group has enormous knowhow in the field of electricity storage. This has helped in developing other means of electricity storage, such as ultracapacitators and batteries, with a technology that is truly unique in the world, Lithium Metal Polymer, more reliable than lithium-ion which can overheat and also deteriorate in the cold. For the same weight, this battery stores five times more energy than a traditional battery. It recharges in just a few hours and needs no maintenance. Made exclusively of non-polluting materials, it poses no risk for the environment. At the end of its lifecycle it is removed and all the components are recycled or reused. Just one of many reasons why the Bolloré group decided to exploit its expertise at a time when the issues of storing electricity and sustainable development have become major challenges for governments and municipalities. So the group set about the developing of electric cars and buses as well as battery production to store electricity for private individuals and institutions. The Bluecar was born. press kit | 16 | THE AMBITION OF A GREAT CITY We all know about the success of the Vélib’ (shared network of bicycles in Paris), which met users’ demands of flexible transportation, available at all times of day, in addition to existing public transportation. The success of the Vélib’ programme encouraged the Mayor of Paris to propose an innovative and complementary service aimed at reducing the use of fossil fuelled private vehicles. The project, unique in regards to its scope, was offered to 46 pioneering and ambitious towns, which have already joined the Autolib’ Joint Initiative. The objective of this specially created entity is to encourage large scale mobility for all and promote transportation services that complement public transportation and are beneficial for the environment. press kit | 17 | what is the difference between autolib’ and normal car sharing? Q&A Normal car sharing does not allow users to return the vehicle to a station different than the rental station, whereas Autolib’ does. The further the autolib’ network is rolled out, the more the users will be able to choose and return their Bluecar wherever they want. what is the difference between an autolib’ station and an autolib’ centre? There are no employees and no facilities at autolib’ stations. They allow subscribers to pick up or return a vehicle 24 hours a day and 7 days a week (4 to 6 roadside spaces and 10 to 20 spaces in the car park) and, for some users, to recharge non-autolib’ electric vehicles. Autolib’ centres are similar to stations, but there is also a shelter and a terminal for subscriptions and staff members are on site from 8am to 8pm to welcome and inform users and assist them with subscriptions and picking up or returning their vehicle. The centre is open to all Autolib’ users 24 hours a day and 7 days a week so that they can use the terminal for subscriptions. can a privately owned vehicle be parked in an autolib’ space? Autolib’ spaces are reserved only for Bluecars. Only private Recharge customers can park in Autolib’ spaces for the purpose of recharging their vehicle. Any other vehicles will be reported and a request made to the impound. press kit | 18 | Q&A how far the Bluecar be driven? How does one know when leaving the authorised area? The Bluecar is only authorised to be driven within the administrative limits of the Paris Ile de France Region. If a Bluecar is taken out of that area the call centre will contact the car to inform the driver and the vehicle must turn back and re-enter the authorised area. If the vehicle is driven outside the autolib’ area the driver is liable to a surcharge of € 2 per half hour spent outside the area. when is the call centre open? The call centre is open from 7am to 10pm 7 days a week. what if there are no free spaces to return the Bluecar? The driver is invited to consult the touch screen in the car, which will indicate the nearest free parking space. If none can be found then the driver can contact the call centre and they will propose a space in one of the closest stations. If the call centre cannot find a space they will inform the driver to go to one of the 8 closest stations where the Bluecar will be handed over to an Ambassador.
