Newsletter 3 - St Joseph`s School Nelson

26th August 2015 Newsletter 3, Term 3 Dear Parents, Students & Friends th
MUFTI DAY This Friday the 28 August 2015, there will be a mufti day for all students. $2 per child, payable to class teacher Friday morning. All proceeds will go towards the St Joseph’s Quiz Night Room 6 recently had the pleasure of visiting River Kitchen cafe. We had a fantastic time, and learnt a lot about what happens in a professional kitchen. Thanks so much to Aaron, Katy and the team! HEADLICE: These are rearing their ugly heads in a couple of classes. Please check your children’s hair this evening and treat any nits you find. Google will give you many ways of treating these. Some require multiple treatments (wash / combing) and some pharmacies in Nelson have a one-‐off treatment. NEW STUDENTS: We welcome the following students and their families to our school and parish communities: Oscar Cogger, Petra Cogger and Thiara Kularathna. TOOTH DECAY IS A PREVENTABLE DISEASE. Decay or ‘holes in our teeth’ are caused by acid attacking our teeth after we eat or drink sugar. Plaque is the furry film that builds up on our teeth everyday and the bacteria in plaque reacts with the sugar in our drinks and food and turns it into acid. Encouraging your children to drink milk and water is a great start to reducing those ‘acid attacks’. Regular Updates From The Nelson Marlborough Community Oral Health Service: Nelson: 539 5324; Stoke: 539 5321; Richmond: 539 5320. ROOM 11 GOOD SAMARITANS: These good Samaritans spent their lunchtime picking up the litter around the school. In Room 11 we have been learning about powerful speeches and how to create a movement that could change lives. We recently watched a clip called “the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes” and this prompted these good Samaritans to make small changes to the environment we work in daily. Well done, guys! As part of our Syndicate Occupations Topic George Molnar recently came to talk to Room 7 about the skills he needs having his own award winning joinery business. We found out that you need to be good with your hands and get along with people! George brought wood for us to try sanding -‐ it took a long time and we learned about perseverance and customer satisfaction! As part of our Occupations Unit all Room 7 students and 6 parents were lucky enough to have a helicopter ride last week thanks to Cameron’s Dad, Keith Mullett. The view was incredible and the children had the experience of a lifetime! Save The Date -‐ please come and join us! On Thursday 17th September, the Intermediate will be taking part in a cultural day. This will include: harakeke (flax) weaving, poi, rakau, taiaha, karakia and waiata. At 1:45, we will have a pōwhiri. During the pōwhiri, all students will be welcomed and those students, who identify as Māori at our school, will be formally welcomed. If there is anyone in our community who is willing and able to assist us on the day or speak on behalf of the manuhiri, please could you contact Chris Gladstone (Room 13).
