Thisrequirestheuseofscreeningmethodstotestforthepresenceofbiologicalfluidsandallowsthe examinertomakeefficientdecisionsregardingwhatevidenceshouldmoveforwardforDNAtesting.The currentscreeningmethodsforsemenandsalivautilizedbyDFSCaresemi-quantitative,introducing potentialfalsepositivesandnotallowingforacorrelationbetweenbodyfluidpresenceandtheabilityto Meyer obtainaDNAprofile.Inanattempttoreducefalsepositivesandtodeterminethiscorrelation,a quantitativemethodforscreeningbothsemenandsalivawasevaluated.Theserologyinstrumentisan enhancedscreeningtoolthatprovidesquantitativevaluesforbothPSA(semen)andamylase(saliva).Itwas evaluatedinfourphases:testingitssensitivity,specificity,assessingitsabilitytohandlemixedsamples,and determiningthecorrelationbetweenthequantvalueoftheinstrumentandtheabilitytoobtainaDNA profile.Theresultsofthisstudywillbediscussedindetailduringthispresentation. Themajorityofmycourtroomappearancesthroughoutmycareerhavebeenfortheprosecution.However, muchofmyprivatecaseworktodayisattherequestofthedefense.InthispresentationI'llbesharingboth Black goodandbadaspectsofsomedefensecasesI'veworkedoverthelastthreeyears.Mostoftheissues involvedocumentation-orthelackthereof-andwilloffersomeguidancetoensureyourcaseworkwill withstandscrutinyovertime.
