You will prepare a poster (one poster per student) depicting the special properties of water

Each of the seven categories listed below must be covered and has to include
 Pictures or diagrams to visualize the important points.
 Description of the issue(s) – often more than one.
 Explanations why for each aspect – often more than one.
1) Intermolecular Forces
Intermolecular Forces in Water: Hydrogen bonding (in water and elsewhere)
2) Physical state
High melting and boiling point of water compared to other small molecules
3) Density
Density of water and ice floats
4) Surface tension
Include water drops and examples from this week’s lab
5) Capillarity
Capillarity (include water and mercury in glass tubes)
6) Specific heat
Specific heat of water, how water moderates earth’s climates, and cooling effect of
perspiration
7) Super solvent
See page 450
Time line
After one period class discussion (Wednesday before break) one day bookwork (Thursday)
of the properties of water, you will have one day in the media center for your research, finding
diagrams and typing up information (Period 1,3,9 Monday after break period 7 Tuesday). The
two following days you have class time to put together your poster. Your homework is to
continue to work on this project outside of class, as needed. The poster must be finished and
handed in by the end of that week (Friday April 20th during class).
Presentation and Quiz
Be prepared to present your poster to a small group of students and teachers. Also, a pop quiz
on the unique properties of water is possible anytime on or after Friday April 20th.
