Ausley Awarded Coveted Spot on New Academia-Industry UAS Team
New partnership aims to enhance and grow commercial unmanned technologies
Ausley Associates, Inc. recently joined more than a dozen of the top Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) universities throughout the world and over 100 government and industry partners selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate the Center of Excellence for UAS (COE UAS) .
Ausley is the only industry partner from St. Mary’s County, MD to be selected as a teammate on the Alliance for
System Safety of UAS through Research Excellence (ASSURE), the team that will operate the COE. ASSURE’s mission is to “provide the FAA with the research they need to quickly, safely and efficiently integrate unmanned aerial
systems into our National Airspace System with minimal changes to our current system.”
“We are extremely proud that the reputation of our skilled workforce led to Ausley’s selection for this significant
effort,” said Ausley President Paul Ausley. “We are a team of innovators helping to shape the future of unmanned
systems development.”
According to the FAA, “The COE will focus on research, education and training in areas critical to safe and
successful integration of UAS into the nation's airspace. The COE research areas are expected to evolve over time,
but initially will include: detect and avoid technology; low-altitude operations safety; control and communications;
spectrum management; human factors; compatibility with air traffic control operations; and training and certification
of UAS pilots and other crewmembers, in addition to other areas.”
“This world-class, public-private partnership will help us focus on the challenges and opportunities of this cuttingedge technology,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in the FAA’s release about the announcement. “We
expect this team will help us to educate and train a cadre of unmanned aircraft professionals well into the future.”
The COE is expected to begin research in September 2015 and to be fully operational and engaged in a robust
research agenda by January 2016. Congress appropriated $5 million for the five-year agreement with the COE, which
will be matched one-for-one by the team members.

St. Mary’s County Library Director Announces Retirement
Kathleen Reif will retire on September 4 after serving as
St. Mary’s County Library Director since 2003.
The St. Mary’s County Board of Library Trustees has begun a search for a new
Director as Kathleen Reif has announced her plans to retire. Ms. Reif will remain
through September 4, 2015 to ensure a smooth and successful transition for her
successor. The Board of Library Trustees has hired Bradbury Associates/Gossage
Sager Associates to conduct the search for a new Director. The consultants will visit
the St. Mary’s County library branches to meet with the library staff and other key
stakeholders, meet with the Board and Search Committee, tour the library, and tour
the community in mid-June.
Joan Springer, President of the Board of Library Trustees stated “It is going to
be a tremendous job finding someone who will qualify for the Directors position. The
St. Mary' County library system has been a front runner in library services throughout
Maryland and this is due to Kathleen's contribution to the growth and advancement
of library services.”
Ms. Reif joined the St. Mary’s County Library as Director in 2003. Prior to taking the helm at St. Mary’s County Library, Ms. Reif was the Director of the Wicomico
County Free Library from 1995 to 2003, the Marketing and Program Coordinator at
the Baltimore County Public Library from 1986 to 1995, and a Children’s Librarian and
Branch Manager at Harford County Library from 1975 to 1985. Ms. Reif earned her Master of Library Science in 1975
from the University of Maryland and a Master of Administrative Science from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.
In 2013, the American Library Association awarded her with the Sullivan Award for Public Library Administrators
Supporting Services to Children.
Ms. Reif said “I have enjoyed a 40-year career of providing public library services in four different Maryland
counties, and I can say without a doubt that the St. Mary’s County Library staff are some of the most professional
and committed I have ever had the pleasure to work with. It is because of them that our libraries are so dynamic and
busy. The next Library Director will be very fortunate to have them by her/his side!”
Ms. Springer continued “Kathleen's skill and efficiency in
managing the complete operation of the library, its staff and
its budgeted resources, have been apparent throughout the
years she has been Director. She empowers the staff to make
decisions and she has accomplished many innovative aspects
including the new technical innovations of library service.
Kathleen's favorite quote is: The world is moved along not
only by mighty shoves of its heros but also by the aggregate
of tiny pushes by each honest worker.”

MetCom Reports Strong Financial and Debt Profile
The first Debt Capacity Study of MetCom since 1999 was released at the April 21, 2015 meeting of the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County. The study by Davenport Public Finance, a firm which provides financial and underwriting services to the public as well as for not for profit issuers in the Mid-Atlantic region, including St. Mary’s County,
gave MetCom a positive report.
The Davenport study compared MetCom customer costs favorably against similarly sized peers across the United
States. The details examined in the financial and debt profile of MetCom costs were based these key points: outstanding
long term debt per customer, annual combined customer bill versus median household income, operating margins,
debt service coverage, and cash liquidity. MetCom scored well in each of these areas and Davenport commented that
MetCom’s debt profile was strong, in part due to its “strong operations and management.”
Further strengthening the findings demonstrating MetCom’s solid debt profile, is that its customer base is smaller
than comparable peer utilities resulting in lower customer costs even though those total costs are distributed among
fewer rate payers.
Davenport concluded that MetCom operates “at a level consistent with a solid AA rated Utility Enterprise Operation.” Further, due to MetCom’s “strong financial, management and debt track record,” the utility has the capability
to explore potentially more efficient and flexible financing mechanisms as well as possibly issuing standalone bonds
to finance projects.
The Executive Summary for MetCom begins on page four of the study, which can be accessed at http://www.

Art Blooms: Fabulous Floral Fantasies
Weekend Exhibit Featuring More Than 25 Floral Designers
Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons is excited to announce the Art Blooms: Fabulous Floral
Fantasies exhibit that will be open for just two days, July 18th and 19th from 10am to 5pm each day. Admission to
the exhibit is FREE.
Art Blooms is a weekend exhibit held in the Dennis Murray Arts Building, featuring the work of more than 25
floral designers from across the region. Each floral designer is assigned a work of art currently in the Main and Mezzanine Galleries and is invited to create a floral arrangement inspired by that work of art. The designers are asked to
draw inspiration from two exhibits this year. The first exhibit, Cosmos: Imagining the Universe, captures how artists render the work of scientists, authors, explorers, astronomers, cartoonists, Trekkies, LARPers, astrologers, and
philosophers. This exhibit embraces not only what science has revealed about space, but what humans have imagined
about the cosmos. The second exhibit,
Heroes & Villains: Exploring Archetypes
Through Art, celebrates the complexities and nuances of heroes and villains
that populate history, literature, popular
culture, folklore, mythology, psychology,
and other realms of human experience
and expression. The resulting floral arrangement beautiful, and provocative and

Rome Goes Vaudeville at Newtowne Players “Forum”
Vaudeville goes to Rome when The Newtowne Players present A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum, weekends from July 10 to August 2 at Three Notch Theatre.
Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for
seniors, military and students and $13 for children 12 and under (the show is not recommended for young children
as it is bawdy but never vulgar). On Thursdays, all tickets are $13. For tickets, visit www.newtowneplayers.org or call
(301) 737-5447. Three Notch Theatre is located at 21744 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park, Md.
Broadway’s greatest musical farce, which was highly successful on Broadway in 1962 and again in 1996, is light,
fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest shows ever written. It takes comedy back to its roots, combining
situations from the time-tested 2,000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of
classic vaudeville set to a score by famed composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim.
The story by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart centers on Pseudolus (Zeke Poiro) who will do anything to win
his freedom – including prying the young courtesan Philia (Lauren Drewello) from “buyer and seller of the flesh of
beautiful women” Marcus Lycus (Dawn Weber) and the great warrior Miles Gloriosus (Mike Cahall) to whom she is
promised. Why? Because his young master Hero (Jacob Lejeune) has fallen in love with Philia on first sight and has
promised Pseudolus his freedom if he can succeed in the task.
And Pseudolus is off on his mission in a forest of schemes, plots, lies and bargains that involve a nervous slave
(J.R. Cook as Hysterium), Hero’s father (Steve Fogle as Senex) and mother (Jean Louise as Domina), a nearly-blind
old man (Joe Bowes as Erronius), five courtesans (Jessany Fogle, Chris Joyce, Stacey Mulrooney, Vicki Powalisz and
Kathleen Weber) and three Proteans (Tim Joyce, Maddie Oosterink and Sean Scriber) who fill various roles “doing
the work of 30.”
Director Michelle Ebert Freire “couldn’t be more pleased with this cast. They range in age from 17 to almost 80,
and they are a bunch of clowns. This is a high-energy show, and we certainly have the right group of actors to pull it
off.”
They are, in one case, unconventional in that “Marcus Lycus” is played by a woman. “I chose in advance to cast
a female in the role of Lycus,” said Freire. “There are so many awesome male roles in Forum and only two principal
female roles. I thought Lycus, the courtesan seller, would work great as a ‘madam,’ adding some maternal sexiness
to the play.”
She continued, “The performers in this show get a real workout. In addition to the songs, dances and riotous
chase scene, folks are walking on their hands, doing flips and cartwheels, jumping into each other’s arms, leaping
from balconies and spinning themselves silly. We have a lot of sweaty actors at the end of rehearsal.”
Filling out the show’s creative team are Jenny Carnahan (producer) Diane Trautman (musical director), Krystal
McCoy (choreographer) and Kristen Kaiser and Lauren Woehrer (stage managers).

“Music’s Beat is at Summerseat,” July 18th
Please join us at Summerseat Farm on July 18th for the Music’s Beat is at Summerseat, a family music event.
The day promises to be full of fun for everyone. Our musical day consists of the hugely popular band, Franklin Square
Band, and then David Norris and The Long Time Friends Band. Gates open at 2:00 pm with music starting at 4:00 pm
till 8:00 pm. There will be Corn Hole games, popcorn, drinks (sodas, beer, wine and water) and food to go along with
this musical afternoon. The grounds of this lovely, historic estate are perfect for walking and picture taking. Bring your
blanket or lawn chairs to place on the rolling hillside looking down over the music pavilion. Franklin Square Band is
a group of DC firefighters who are burning up the music world with their eclectic repertoire of music, such as Top 40,
Rock and Roll, Country, plus other surprises (did someone say bagpipes?). They have been making appearances in
MD, PA, and VA and steadily gaining in popularity. You don’t want to miss them. David Norris is a local, well-known
singer and songwriter. He can sing anything from The Eagles to Arlo Guthrie. He is also a local historian, as some of
his songs will reveal. He has even done a popular CD for children. He and the band were on the lineup last year with
Charlie Daniels Band and they wowed the audience. Everyone has wanted to see them again, so here’s your chance.
Tickets are $20 per person, $10 for age 12 and under. Visit our website www.summerseat.org and click on the link
Brown Paper Tickets to order your tickets. Tickets at the gate for $25. No coolers allowed. Summerseat Farm, Inc. is

MD. (Rt. 235). Don’t miss it.
