Irving, TX 75062 PHONE 888.887.BIGS FAX 972.421.1770 [email protected] WEB www.bbbstx.org Big News is published, edited and designed by Sara Balough, Jamie Bearden, Kristin Carter, and Dan Stuchal. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a donorsupported volunteer organization that places caring adults in the lives of children in one-to-one mentoring relationships. Through the positive impact of those friendships, children with a Big Brother or Big Sister are more likely to graduate from high school and less likely to begin using drugs, begin using alcohol or engage in negative conflict. Contact us at 888.887.BIGS or visit us on the web at www.bbbstx.org. Sacrifices have been made this past year by our staff, by our board and by all of our constituents who support our mission. Collectively, we have sacrificed so that services to our volunteers, families and children would not have to. The fact that we supported 9,023 children through mentoring relationships despite a 12% decrease in budgeted expenses is a testament to the dedication and determination of our staff and boards. While the economy is improving, times are still difficult. More children need our services and we must find ways to provide for them. New innovations and initiatives are on the horizon that will help us successfully navigate the unreliable economy. While investing resources in these new practices will be challenging, their promise of increasing our program’s impact on children, our schools and our communities justifies the effort. As always, the overarching first priority for the agency is the continued safety of the children in our program. Our top priority for 2010 is continued program quality to insure sustainable and impactful service. In the effort to enhance quality, steps will be taken to support longer and stronger matches and increased parental/guardian involvement will be expected from the families involved in our program. New initiatives will be explored that include targeted mentoring efforts to children expressing early indicators of potential juvenile delinquency. Finally, we will be launching a new program that will enable us to more fully engage corporate partnerships to better impact the children we serve. Challenging times breed innovation. Because the need for positive, caring role models in the lives of children has not changed, we have become more intuitive, more creative and more focused on how we continue to successfully mentor children. Through persistent hard work together, we are changing the way children grow up in America. As always, thank you for your support. Sincerely, T. Boone Pickens Mentoring Hall of Fame In front of more than 300 attendees on January 12, 2010, T. Boone Pickens recognized Don Carty as the first official inductee into the T. Boone Pickens Mentoring Hall of Fame. The former chairman and chief executive officer of AMR Corp. and American Airlines, Mr. Carty exemplifies the mission and values of the Hall of Fame through his personal life and professional mentoring of others. Located in the North Texas headquarters of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the T. Boone Pickens Mentoring Hall of Fame celebrates the life-changing power of mentoring. It depicts real stories of mentoring and honors people who have invested their time, care and guidance into the lives of others. As a long-time volunteer and supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Carty is one of the finest advocates for mentoring. “This is a cause like no other. We know that we are having a significant impact on a child’s life and are part of a movement that will change hundreds of thousands of lives in the future.” During his career, Carty has exemplified the mentoring skills the T. Boone Pickens Hall of Fame champions. He is part of a broad-based group of mentors whose legacy will live for generations to come. They are each living examples of the motto: “Mentoring one transforms many.” After retiring from American Airlines, Carty served as vice chairman and chief financial officer of Dell Inc., and remains on its board of directors. Prior to American Airlines, Carty spent seven years in various leadership positions with Celanese Canada Ltd., Air Canada, and the Canadian Pacific Railway Carty also serves on the Boards of Directors, Barrick Gold Corp., Hawaiian Holdings Inc., and Gluskin Sheff & Associates Inc. He is also chairman of Virgin America Airlines Inc. and Porter Airlines Inc., and serves on the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Southern Methodist University and the SMU Cox School of Business Executive Board. In September of 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Carty to the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, where he served until the summer of 2005. In January 2003, he was named an officer of The Order of Canada. We salute and congratulate Mr. Don Carty on his honor and thank him for a life example of mentoring others. The T. Boone Pickens Mentoring Hall of Fame is located at 450 E John Carpenter Freeway in Irving, Texas. For more information, visit www.mentoringhof.org. T. Veteran’s Day Event At 9:38 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, Little Brother Raul stepped off a plane at the Abilene Regional Airport sporting a favorite T-shirt and a smile after an adventure of “firsts.” The 16-year-old Little Brother’s adventure began on Tuesday morning at 8:30 with his first plane ride. Upon landing, he began his first trip to Washington, D.C. and did some sight seeing. He concluded his two-day voyage by giving a speech about Big Brother Big Sisters in the presence of First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden and Alma Powell. And, best of all, he shared the adventure with his Big Brother, AFB Staff Sgt. Francisco “Cisco” Hernandez. Hernandez also said that he was impressed with his Little’s speaking abilities. “It took a lot of courage to get up there and speak in front of that many people and Raul did great,” said Hernandez. While in Washington, the two friends spent their free time exploring, admiring the kerosene lamps, historical museums and enjoyed a meal at the Hard Rock Café. “Every moment after arriving in Washington there was always something to do,” said Raul. Before their journey ended, Hernandez and Raul left with a few mementos. One picture with MTV’s Sway Calloway, a tooth pick from Hard Rock Café and an incredible amount of “first” stories to tell friends and family. The Big and Little match was selected from a national pool of Big Brothers Big Sisters military matches to speak at the Veteran’s Day event. The event promoted the launch of Mission Serve which partners civilian and military service organizations involved in community service opportunities throughout the nation. Cisco has been matched with Raul since December 2002. In those seven years, they have stayed in touch throughout Cisco’s multiple over-seas deployments. They still meet at least twice a month. “I’ve been living in the Abilene community and have been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters for a while now and it feels great to give back,” said Hernandez. EMERGING MARKETS UP D A T E Waco & Stephenville STEPHENVILLE Leadership Stephenville wanted to bring Big Brothers Big Sisters to Stephenville. As a result, community leaders embraced the idea and raised the funds needed to cover the first year’s expenses for the emerging non-profit agency. Boards were established, organizational goals were set and marketing efforts began. A centrally located office was established through a generous donation by Parks & Associates Ameriprise Financial. Other donations include $10,000 from a local business man and his wife, $10,000 from Stephenville resident and music artist Jewel and $25,000 from Dan Schecter and Carpenter Company, one of Jewel’s sponsors. Additional funds were raised through the hard work of the newly established board of directors, advisory board and community supporters. 8 big news • spring 2010 Matches have already been made and lives are being changed. Thank you, Stephenville, for bringing us to the community. WACO Big Brothers Big Sisters Waco began in 1993 as a result of the passion one former Big Brother had for the program. He knew first hand what Big Brothers Big Sisters could bring to a child’s life and wanted to share that with as many kids and volunteers as possible. His commitment resulted in hundreds of friendships made between Bigs and Littles in Waco. In the fall of 2009, a group of devoted Big Brothers Big Sisters supporters began to search out options to help the agency grow in Waco. With the help of the same Big Brother who started the program 16 years ago, an affiliation was formed with Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas. The road to this partnership has been carefully thought out. While current matches in Waco are being maintained, Big Brothers Big Sisters of McLennan County is re-structuring for growth. The Board is building financial and community support that will enable success for years to come. The need of the community is great, but so is the passion this group has for helping children be all they can be. It is with great confidence and optimism that Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas teams with McLennan County and it is with equal determination that Waco community leadership will work to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Grooming Men of the Future One Shop at a Time The Natural Edges Salon in Dallas is a rowdy barbershop where black men gather to loudly talk smack, politics and sports. But on one wintry November morning last year, the men suddenly stopped talking. Someone turned the radio off, and the barbers’ clippers stopped humming. A man had just challenged the customers’ manhood. The man was President-elect Obama. He was giving a televised speech challenging men to get involved in their communities. {CNN.com: Is Obama Inspiring Black Men to Step Up? By John Blake}. For barber Michael Johnson, who grew up without a father but was mentored by Big Brother Dale Long, the challenge was on! “I can do this today instead of tomorrow,” Johnson said. “Tomorrow may be too late. I can save a young man’s life today.” to serve more African-American little boys and young men in positive, one-to-one mentoring relationships,” Brownlow said. In 2005, the challenge targeted three barbershops in Dallas-Fort Worth and produced ten African-American male mentors. In 2009, seven area barbershops recruited 58 African-American men to become mentors. Now, Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates in Austin, Houston, Miami, Lexington KY, Portland OR, and St. Louis are replicating the successful male recruitment initiative. Next year’s Grooming Men of the Future event in North Texas is expanding to ten shops and incorporating new national partners Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The 2010 event hopes to recruit 100 mentors. *This year’s participants included Choppa City Barbershop in Fort Worth, L.A. Elite Cuts in Dallas, Ray’s Barber & Beauty Salon in Lewisville, Tye’s Barber & Beauty Salon in Plano, Natural Edges Barbershop in Lewisville, Platinum Cuts in Arlington, and Kut it Up Barbershop & Beauty Salon in Arlington. This year, Natural Edges, along with six other metroplex barbershops*, joined forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to collectively answer President Obama’s call to service. Fraternity members – many of whom are Big Brothers – converged upon partnering barbershops and signed up black men as Big Brothers while waiting to get their hair cut. Established in 2005, the Gooming Men of the Future event was created to recruit African-American male role models. According to Kristy Brownlow, director of mentor recruitment for Big Brothers Big Sisters, it’s working. “Since the inception of this initiative, recruitment of African-American male mentors has increased by more than 10 percent which has allowed Big Brothers Big Sisters spring 2010 • big news 9 Partners Spotlight: Reliant Energy Reliant Energy – Finding New Ways to Help Reliant Energy recently became one of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ newest corporate partners by helping to support our current mentoring relationships and helping create new ones. “We are committed to investing in our local communities and believe in the transforming power mentoring has in the life of at-risk youth”, said Ms Tracy Carmen-Jones, Vice President of Community Affairs for Reliant Energy. For the last 2 years, CoAFCU bowlers have raised more money than any other team at the event. In 2009, CoAFCU took home the coveted “traveling trophy” for the most money raised at Banker’s Bowl. Judy Keppel, president and CEO of CoAFCU said “We became involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters through Banker’s Bowl and we just really enjoyed being there. Over half of our employees bowled. We felt like it was a worthy cause, and that really set the tone for wanting to do more.” As a result, CoAFCU recently enabled their members to free up some cash for holidays while supporting mentoring at the same time. CoAFCU partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters in the first ever “Skip-a-Loan Payment” program. CoAFCU members were given an option of skipping a loan payment by making a $10 donation. Through these efforts in November and December, CoAFCU members donated more than $10,700. This generosity was matched by the credit union, which made a matching gift, making the final contribution $21,420.00! The check was presented to Tim Yandell, Big Brothers Big Sisters Regional Executive Director, on January 12 at the Mr. Gatti’s National Mentoring Month Celebration. Many CoAFCU employees were present, as well as local Abilene matches. “It’s just such a great feeling to contribute to an organization that does so much for our young people,” said Keppel. “The members were extremely receptive to supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters, and we raised so much more than we expected.” What a wonderful way to begin the year and celebrate National Mentoring Month. CoAFCU is an outstanding corporate partner with a shared vision for helping Abilene children. The 2009 Autobahn Limited Edition Raffle raised over $300,000. The grand prize, a 2009 BMW Z4, went to Hieu Nguyen of Arlington. Charlie Gantt, also of Arlington, walked away with the Caribbean Cruise provided by Wyndham Jade. Legacy Giving Using Life Insurance You can become a Legacy donor by making a donation through a life insurance policy! The premiums you make on a life insurance policy owned by Big Brothers Big Sisters could result in your charitable gift becoming more valuable than an annual cash gift in the same amount. By using cash value life insurance, Big Brothers Big Sisters has access to cash value during your life, and receives the death benefit creating a legacy at your death. Or, if you have an existing policy which is no longer needed to protect your estate you may receive valuable gift and tax benefits by donating the policy to Big Brothers Big Sisters. No matter your age, a gift of a life insurance policy can, and in most cases, exceeds your ability to make a cash donation. Some simple plans exist for helping Big Brothers Big Sisters such as designating Big Brothers Big Sisters as a charitable beneficiary of life insurance or annuities; gifting a new or existing life insurance policy to Big Brothers Big Sisters; or establishing a charitable gift annuity. Designating Big Brothers Big Sisters as beneficiary does allow you some flexibility if you remain owner with the ability to change the amount going to Big Brothers Big Sisters but it does limit your income tax deductions during your lifetime. But you can provide a potentially larger gift to Big Brothers Big Sisters by leaving a legacy at the time of your death. The Duncan Society Members Build Legacy for Big Brothers Big Sisters Duncan Society membership is open to anyone who has made provisions in their estate to include Big Brothers Big Sisters . Charitable Gift Annuities If you own CD’s and the interest earned in the 1 to 3% range, then you should explore a charitable gift annuity when your CD is maturing. A CGA provides life income yields at higher rates that are guarantied, you receive life income, and Big Brothers Big Sisters is the recipient of a generous gift at the time of your death. Also, charitable gift annuities can be two life agreements, so a spouse or partner can receive benefits until their death.
