About the Convention
The Institution of Engineers (India), the largest professional body of Engineers in the
country, organises National Conventions for each Engineering Division every year,
as its core technical activity. This year Kerala State Centre of IEI has been entrusted
with organising the prestigious 28th National Convention of Electrical Engineers with
theme “Electricity for all - Vision for a brighter India” during 6-7 October 2012.
This Convention will be highlighting the activities of the Division Board through
discussions and mutual interactions. The Convention also aims at establishing liaison
between the Institution, its members and policy makers with maximum involvement
of general public.
About The Institution of Engineers (India)
IEI is a premier professional body of Engineers and technologists with a network of
27 State Centres, 76 Local Centres spread over the whole country and 5 overseas
Chapters. IEI is a multidisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 Engineering
disciplines and gives Engineers a global platform to share professional views and
aspirations.
Established in 1920, with its headquarters in Calcutta, IEI has served the engineering
fraternity for over nine decades. In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and
remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour.
IEI provides continous provides professional development through regular programmes
in India and abroad and opportunity to participate in national and international
seminars. IEI provides Chartered Engineer’s Certificate for all its members which
helps them to practice in any engineering field.
IEI offers a non-formal engineering course (AMIE), the successful completion of which
is officially recognized as equivalent to a degree in engineering.
Kerala State Centre
The Institution of Engineers (India), Trivandrum Centre was established at
Thiruvananthapuram in 1947 with Shri. K.P.P. Menon as founder Chairman. With the
formation of the Kerala State in 1956, the activities of the Institution extended to
the erstwhile Cochin and Malabar regions and the Centre was named as Kerala State
Centre. The IEI Kerala State Centre started functioning in its present premises from
1957 onwards.
There are 5 Local Centres of IEI Kerala State Centre at Kochi, Trichur, Palakkad,
Kozhikode, and Kollam.
IEI Kerala State Centre also offers non-formal engineering course (AMIE Section-A)
and GATE Guidance Classes for M.Tech. admission on no loss no profit basis.
Theme : Electricity for all - Vision for a brighter India
India is the seventh largest country in the world in area and the second largest in
population. It is the fifth largest energy consumer and the fourth largest economy
in terms of purchasing power parity. In the coming years India’s energy demand will
increase tremendously and for a brighter India, it is most essential that long term
initiatives are taken.
For meeting the development targets of India our power generating capacity has
to increase to 400,000 MW by 2030 from the present 130,000 MW. This has to
be achieved through conventional-hydel, thermal (coal, gas, nuclear) and non
conventional - wind, solar, biomass sources of energy.
Access to electricity in India is quite uneven. On the whole only 64.5% of the
population have access. And those who have access suffer from shortages and
quality of supply. Unscheduled outages, load shedding, fluctuating voltage and erratic
frequency are common. Of the total population about 400 million people do not
have electricity. The country is facing overall power shortage of nearly 10% and
peaking power shortage of nearly 15%.
The energy policy of our government adopts an energy road map, identifying
multiple energy challenges like continous supply, mitigating climate change, providing
renewable energy and enhancing safety standards.
With the above vision, The Institution of Engineers (India) expects the 28th National
Convention of Electrical Engineers will ensure Electricity for all and a brighter India.
