There have been a number of publications in the newspaper recently discussing New Zealand's declining global ranking in student achievement. New Zealand has been on quite a journey and with mixed results. What can be agreed on is that schools cannot flourish in competition and isolation. We need to work together as a community to share what works best for our students and their pathway from kindergarten (or preschool) through to high school. Lynfield Community of Learners is such a community. This week, Mrs Stephenson and myself attended a collaborative impact conference along with researchers, education leaders and members of the ministry of education. To hear and share educational practice that make a difference and how we can implement these in our schools. The clear message from Dr Russell Bishop were for schools to actively grow a culture that promotes the following: Anti-Deficit thinking (kaua e whakaiti) Caring for the children (Manaakitanga) Having high expectations (tumanako teitei) Managing learning effectively (tiakitanga) Knowing what needs to be learnt (mohiotanga) Donation Reminder to parents who haven't paid their school donation. Please help us to continue to provide better opportunities for our students. Watch out for Kids All children crossing Bolton street must cross at the school crossing. Not at the shops! Knowing thy learner and knowing thy impact means we need to know (assess) the whole student. Not just tests (although they are important to establish a baseline for academic learning). We also assess what makes our students laugh, what they believe in, their family, their culture and how best they learn. We also get to know what challenges they face and how to use our strengths to meet and overcome these challenges. By better understanding, we can ensure we don't leave any student behind. We want all our students and our community to join us in becoming Assessment Literate. Students Students will be able to use and understand assessment literacy. Students are clear about what they are learning and why. Students will be clear about how they will achieve their learning. Students will be clear about what the learning might look like. Students will be clear about how well the learning has been achieved (self assessment). Students will self evaluate and self-regulate their learning by reflecting on their current achievement and progress to determine their next learning goals. Parents Parents are able to understand assessment terminology and access assessment data on their child. Parents are able to ask questions and have dialogue in relation to their child’s learning. Parents are able to support their child’s next learning steps. Parents are in communication with their child’s teacher and the school regarding their progress, achievement and school-wide assessment information. BHBI is building a cohesive model of teaching and learning within our school. All things align to our Strategic goals, our values, our students and their learning needs. Teachers professional Inquiries focus on Visible Learning for our children and their families. Mr Iosia leads School Wide Positive Behaviour for Learning, making sure our BHBI Values drive our culture of Maanakitanga. Mrs Stephenson drives the Assessment for Learning in the school, ensuring every child develops their learner pathway alongside their teacher and you. Supporting teachers to develop strategies, environments and relationships to accelerate advancement. Mrs Wikitera supports Mrs Stephenson while running the day to day logistics of ensuring our operation runs smoothly. These talented and inspiring Associate and Deputies are supported by passionate leaders and teachers. Student Led Conferences We hold our student led conferences next Thursday and we want to see all of you. In fact you have to be there. You deserve to hear your child’s triumphs and tribulations. See where they learn and see their work in class. They will take you on their pathway this year and share their challenges and then they will tell you how you can help. What you hear may surprise you. But you will never never know if you never go. I had my sons interviews at MAGS on Tuesday. That was an hour. We ask for 15 minutes, please book on line. parentinterviews.co.nz code VMNNG. Mobiles are off while at school from Monday We have had a number of unfortunate incidents with students’ mobiles of late and are in the process of deciding how best to manage students and their phones at school. We understand phones are essential for working families and busy kids who need to organise their lives. However we want our students to engage with each other and not their phones while on school property. We ask that all phones are turned off at the gate and turned on as they leave. Phones are locked up while at school and contact is made via the office. Nothing really changes we are just making sure that phones are not out and about when our kids are unsupervised and when incidents can occur. This will come into effect from Monday and students will be reminded at assembly. Students playing on their phones, filming others or listening to music on the school grounds will have their phones locked away in the class until the end of the day. Safer communities together. Kohia te kai rangatira, ruia te taitea. Gather the good food, cast away the rubbish. (Adopt what is good and shun what is bad). Thank you for your understanding, we look forward to seeing you next week.
