SHERIFF’S MESSAGE
If you choose to keep a gun in your home, the safety of your
children and the children that visit your home is your
responsibility and only yours. Guns and your children is a
subject you cannot avoid or postpone. If dealing with the
issues of guns and children is not one you can take seriously
and take the steps necessary to protect them, then do not have
a gun in your home. The safe storage and use of guns and the
safety of your children must be your top priority.
As always, if you have a question or concern, please contact
our office.

March - Firearms
MARCH 2017

1.4 million homes have firearms stored in a way that
makes them most accessible to about 2.6 million children
Many firearms are bought with home protection in
mind. In the right circumstances, a gun can be your
first and most effective line of defense against
intruders and criminals.

Guns kept in the home are more likely to be involved
in a fatal or nonfatal unintentional shooting, criminal
assault or suicide attempt than to be used to injure or
kill in self-defense. That is, a gun is more likely to be
used to kill or injure an innocent person in the home
than a threatening intruder.

Should I own a gun or not? There is no "right"
answer. Whether or not a gun is the best choice for
your home protection needs is a very personal
decision. You are the best person to realistically assess
the tradeoff between the risks and rewards of gun
ownership and decide what the best course of action is
for your family.


Use a gun locking device that renders the
firearm inoperable when not in use. A gun lock
should be used as an additional safety
precaution and not as a substitute for secure
storage.
Make sure young people in your home are
aware of and understand the safety guidelines
concerning firearms. Remind them that if they
find an unattended firearm in their home or a
neighbor’s to not touch it, and tell an adult.
Always unload, clean and place your firearms
in their secure storage location immediately
after returning from a hunting trip or a day at
the range.
Educate everyone in your family about
firearms safety.
Nearly all firearm accidents in the home can
be prevented when gun owners take simple
precautions, and proper storage is the
number one way to help prevent accidents.






Always keep the firearm’s muzzle pointed in a
safe direction. A “safe direction” means that
the gun is pointed so that even if an accidental
discharge occurred, it would not result in
injury.
Always keep your finger off the trigger until
you actually intend to shoot. When handling a
gun, rest your finger outside the trigger guard
or along the side of the gun. Don’t touch the
trigger until you are actually ready to fire.
Firearms should be unloaded when not actually
in use. Whenever you pick up a gun, such as
when removing it from or returning it to
storage, remember to point it in a safe direction
and make sure it is unloaded.
Be sure you know how your firearm operates.
Read the manual on your firearm, know how to
safely open and close the action of the firearm
and know how to safely remove any
ammunition from the firearm and its magazine.
Store your firearms in a locked cabinet, safe,
gun vault or storage case when not in use,
ensuring they are in a location inaccessible by
children and cannot be handled by anyone
without your permission.
Store your ammunition in a locked location
separate from firearms.
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Oscar Wilde said, "Consistency is the last refuge of the
unimaginative." So stop getting up at 6:05 and get up at
5:06. Walk a mile at dawn. Find a new way to drive to
work. Switch chores with your spouse this weekend. Buy a
wok or study wildflowers. Stay up alone all night. Read to
the blind. Start counting brown-eyed blondes. Subscribe to
an out-of-town paper. Canoe at midnight. Don't write to
your Congressman; take a whole scout troop to see him.
Learn to speak Italian. Teach some kid the thing you do
best. Listen to two hours of uninterrupted Mozart. Take up
aerobic dancing. Leap out of that rut. Savor life!
Remember, we pass this way only once (source Unknown).
We should not be identified by our addictions. The Bible
clearly states “where the Spirit of the Lord is there is
freedom” (2 Cor. 3:17). We can be free from our
addictions, free from our past, free to live out our future.
Don’t be held down by your own self imposed chains. Life
is meant to be lived! Practice freedom.
