June 2016
"BE NOT AFRAID"
I write that as the news is filled with information
and speculation about the disappearance of
Egyptian Air Flight 804. I am in the very early
planning stages of an international trip and one of
the "stops" under consideration is Cairo. When I
heard the news my heart skipped a beat. "Do I
really want to go there?" I asked myself.
Fear is a good thing. It is protective and warns us
away from danger. Fear is a reasonable response to
danger that is imminent, identifiable, and/or
avoidable. But we live in a world where danger is
not always identifiable. We live In a world where
airplanes disappear, suicide bombers murder
innocent people in public places, when people at
McDonald's or a movie theater or sports event die
of gun violence. The fear these events generates is
a different kind of fear – it is a fear of the unknown,
of not being in control, of being vulnerable.
There is no easy answer here and the factors to be
considered in any given situation are varied and
complex. But letting fear control or dominate our
lives is not healthy. The truth is bad things happen
to good people – always has, always will. Life is
filled with struggle and adversity; injustice and
tragedy.
In truth, we are not in control of our lives and
cannot insulate ourselves or protect ourselves from
bad things, from tragic things. When fear begins to
control our lives we begin to exclude people that
aren't "like us" and we scapegoat others. We
withdraw from others, from anything that is not
familiar and very safe. I, for one, do not wish to live
that way.
I may or may not go to Cairo but I will definitely
make an international trip. I will take every
reasonable precaution but I will not live my life in
fear. I am created to love, and to share, to learn, to
explore, to rejoice in the goodness in the world. I
for one am not willing to give that up.
SUMMERTIME
AND THE
LIVIN’ IS EASY…
Looking ahead to July and August, please mark
your calendars for two extra-special summer
services. We will hold our annual Church Picnic on
Sunday, July 24th at Sue Osgood and Carol
Trudelle’s home, and on Sunday, August 7th we’ll
meet for a relaxed Vespers Service. Details to
follow in the July/August Scroll.
TIME FOR
WHITE
ELEPHANTS
White Elephants! Did you think we forgot?
Elephants never forget! Spring is here so bring us
your stuff! The cupboard (Parish House basement)
is bare so now is the time to bring your treasures to
be sold at the Holiday Bazaar. Small items or a few
boxes, labeled “White Elephants”, can be placed in
the entrance area in the Parish House. Got a car or
truckload? Give Paul Sutherland a call (459-2064)
to arrange a time to meet at the bulkhead to the
basement.
Furniture has been a big part of the sale and we
would love to have donations of small tables,
benches, chairs, dining room sets (we have sold six
dining sets in the last two years!) or any other
furniture items we can refinish/revive. You never
know, you might want to purchase it back after we
perform our “magic”. Call Paul Sutherland if you
will be donating a furniture piece to see if it's
appropriate for our sale and where it should
delivered.
Musical instruments are always welcome and we
will do our best to put them back in “play”. You
know they aren't doing any good in your attic!
So, let's get busy! People have already circled
November 5th on their calendars and we need to be
ready!
UCP
FUNDRAISER
The Union Church is holding a fundraiser. We will
be selling handmade greeting card through
Usborne Books. A box of 30 cards and envelopes is
$30.00. Save time, have a box on hand for that lastminute birthday. A sample box of cards will be
available to view on Sundays in the Parish House.
The Church will receive a handsome profit at no
cost to us. At a dollar a card, it’s a real bargain. See
Nancy Young for the order form. Payment should
be made at time of order. Checks may be made out
to Union Church of Proctor.
There are 4 types of boxes:
 Box 1 contains 30 beautifully embellished cards
with envelopes for all types of occasions.
 Box 2 also contains 30 different beautifully
embellished cards with envelope for all occasions.
 Box 3 contains 30 cards consisting of 11 thank you
cards and 19 blank cards (all with envelopes).
 Box 4 contains happy birthday cards, boxed with 30
handcrafted, printed and novelty cards appropriate
for children to give or receive (with envelopes).
If you have no need to send cards, consider
purchasing a box of cards to donate to the prison
ministry. The men truly appreciate having cards to
send to their families.

THE
CHURCH
MOUSE
I do know that the roof needed repairs, but I am
surely looking forward to the end when the
banging stops. There are times when I try to find a
place as far down in the building as I can just for
the peace and quiet. Of course I can't complain too
much as they don't work at night or when it rains.
There are the regular happenings going on in June.
The Men's Breakfast being the second Saturday,
June 11. Then there will be the Ladies Lunch at the
Rutland Country Club on Tuesday, June 14.
Hopefully nothing will happen to cause a
cancellation.
Of course, this being June it means that the Choir
will be getting ready to stop for the summer. I will
surely miss listening to them rehearse and then
again during the service. I heard someone say that
their last day will be June 12. Then on Father's
Day, June 19, the women of the church will sing to
the men.
The Proctor Free Library will be holding their
Annual Book Sale on Friday June 24 from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. and Saturday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Saturday, June 25 will also be the date for the date
Don't forget to go down to the Proctor Youth
League Fields on Sunday, June 26 for the Third
Annual Proctor Home Run Derby. There is more
information for you to see in the Proctor Pages
Newsletter which is mailed to all residents of
Proctor on a quarterly basis.
The Ladies of the church were here for a potluck
supper on May 18. Everything smelled (and yes
tasted) so good. I do have my ways of sneaking a
taste now and then.
I can't believe it!! I found a note in the Mouse
Trap!! The Marble Town Seniors left a note about
their upcoming summer event . On July 15 there
will be a Luncheon Cruise on Lake George aboard
the Lac du Saint Sacrement, the largest cruise ship
on Lake George. Travel to Lake George will be by
Premier Coach to board the ship at 11:00 a.m. for a
buffet lunch and then at noon enjoy a 2-hour cruise
with live entertainment. Group rate for the cruise
and luncheon is $34.50 plus $10.50 for the bus,
bringing the total cost per person to $45.00.
Departure will be from St Dominic's back parking
lot at 9:15 a.m. and return by 4:00 p.m. A $1 to $2
gratuity for the bus driver will be collected on the
return trip. Count and money due by June 27.
Checks should be made payable to Marble Town
Seniors; please mail them to Marie Smith, 15 Eden
Avenue, Proctor, VT 05765 (802-459-3379). If
using a cane, walker or wheelchair, please let us
know. Please join us and invite a friend. You do
not have to be a senior to come.
God Bless everyone and keep those notes coming!
