The University of Iowa Venture School, a nationally
recognized program for entrepreneurs developed by the University
of Iowa’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC), held its
closing workshop and business pitch event on May 11 in Looft Hall
at Iowa Western Community College. Three teams pitched their
business idea as part of the Launch & Grow event.
“We couldn’t make this program happen without our sponsor,
the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce, our partners Iowa
Western Community College and the Small Business Development
Center, and our volunteer mentors,” said Elizabeth Hallgren, UI
JPEC faculty member and Council Bluffs based lead instructor for
Venture School.
As part of the intensive six-week program with a streamlined
curriculum developed by the National Science Foundation at
Stanford University and the University of California Berkeley,
teams were partnered with mentors who shared their experiences
in starting their own successful companies.
“I love how the teams came into Venture School full of
passion but without a clear vision of how they will turn their dream
into a real business. But by the 3rd or 4th week, all the pieces
started to fit together, and you could see the companies actually
coming together right before your eyes.” said Venture School
instructor Gregg Barcus.
The Council Bluffs Venture School cohort was sponsored by
the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce and is a partnership with

As we finished up our
successful membership event
in early May and look forward
to the Chamber Total Resource
Campaign in the fall, I began to
look at all the programs we do
and recognized the tremendous
reliance we have on volunteers.
Bob Mundt
In everything we do, from these
President/CEO of the
campaigns to Board service to
Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce
committees and task forces,
people give their time and expertise…for FREE.
Volunteer is a word used a lot in the Chamber world. But with
all due respect, I question whether it’s the right word for the work
being done. These programs and tasks are vital to the success of
the community, and it takes special people with special skills to
accomplish them. Let me explain.
When I hear the word volunteer, I think of a person selling
raffle tickets or running the register at a bake sale. Volunteers
give their time freely to swing a hammer for Habitat or feel
obligated when it’s their turn to work the booster club concessions
or chaperone a school dance. While personally enriched, they
expect no personal gain. When we ask business leaders for their
involvement, I don’t think we’re tapping their altruistic instincts.
I don’t believe business people serve on a government affairs
committee because it’s the right thing to do. I believe they serve
because they feel their knowledge and leadership skills can make a
difference and their company can benefit from their collective voice.
Every time we ask a member to spend time with us, I hope we
are appealing primarily to their company’s success, not their sense
of charity or duty.
Most business people instinctively quantify the value of a
vibrant community on the health and well-being of their company,
and indirectly, themselves. Some enjoy it so much it becomes a
passion and thus, we see many of the same people in different
capacities. They may never even think of financial gain.
I call these people leaders. To them, being a community or
Chamber partner is more valuable than being an interest group.
Going forward, when I ask a member to contribute time, I
may ask them to lead, not volunteer. To get engaged and make a
difference. Thank you for your support of the Chamber.

Total Resource Campaign Starts September 2016!
The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce will kick-off
its 8th Annual Total Resource Campaign (TRC) in September 2016.
The TRC format was adopted to organize the Chamber’s wide array
of sponsorship opportunities into a
“catalog” that will help Chamber
members plan their marketing in an
organized eight-week, all-volunteer
campaign.
The campaign also helps the
Chamber to complete its fundraising
for the upcoming year. Money
raised will help fund the Chamber’s
numerous programs, events, and
publications throughout the year.
The campaign will officially
Kristine Plunkett
end on October 28, 2016. When the
Vice President of Operations,
campaign ends, so does fundraising Membership & Small Business
Development
for the Chamber’s 2017 year.
Neither volunteers nor staff will be calling on members who have
committed during the campaign for sponsorship support until the
next TRC in summer/fall of 2017.
bring it!
The Chamber is currently recruiting volunteers to help market
the campaign. Do you want to learn more about the Chamber? Do
you want to meet new people? Call Kristine Plunkett (712) 3251000 or email [email protected]. In-depth training
is provided.
Interested in promoting your business in a creative, low-cost
manner? Want to help promote and sustain the local business
community? Chamber members can select the sponsorship
opportunities from $100 to $5,000 to best suit to their needs. If
you do not hear from someone and want to participate, please call
Kristine Plunkett at (712) 325-1000.
“The TRC is a great way for volunteers to meet our areas top
community leaders and business owners while working directly
with some of the Chamber’s most dedicated leadership,” says
Kristine Plunkett, Vice President of Operations, Membership &
Small Business Development.

CB Chamber Recruits 117
New Members!
The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its 2016
Membership Event on May 3-5, 2016. For two-and-a-half days,
90 volunteers worked against the clock and against each other
to sign up new Chamber members and create greater community
awareness of the important role and impact of the Chamber.
“We are so fortunate to
have such a wonderful group
of volunteers. With their help
and support, this event was
a huge success!” Kim Buthe,
Membership & Engagement
Specialist for the Chamber.
The Chamber organized
this volunteer-driven event
that took place at The Venue in
Harrah’s Casino & Hotel. The
Godfather John Jerkovich
Chamber worked with Jimmy
Cusano and a group called Your
Chamber Connection, an organization that specializes in highenergy membership campaigns that allow volunteers to build the
Chamber’s membership base, and have fun while doing it.
Chairs for the 2016 event teams were:
Deb Petersen- Petersen Law
Terry Oldenburg- Beacon Vacations
Tom Schmitt- The Daily Nonpareil
Doug Goodman- Clear Title & Abstract
Barry Cleaveland- SilverStone Group
Ric Killion- American National Bank
Greg Jacobs- Computer Systems, Inc.
Chris Blum- TS Bank
Judd Knispel- State Farm Insurance - Judd Knispel Agency
Each chair recruited five team captains, who then recruited at
least five team members to recruit new Chamber members.
Doug Goodman, chair of the Royal Blue group, led the charge
with 37 sales totaling $12.450.00. Goodman’s top team captain,
Don Kohler, led his team #18 to 14 sales totaling $4,745.00.
And we all bow down to the Godfather of the 2016
Membership Event: John Jerkovich. Jerkovich was the top
individual seller with 7 sales totaling $2,345.00.
Overall, 90 volunteers recruited 117 new members during
the 2016 Membership Event and promoted the Chamber and the
Council Bluffs community in a dynamic way.
The Membership Event for the Council Bluffs Area Chamber
of Commerce concluded on May 5, 2016, with a celebration event
party at The Venue inside Harrah’s Casino & Hotel. The event
sponsor was Caesars Entertainment in conjunction with Harrah’s
Casino & Hotel and the Horseshoe Casino. The celebration sponsor
was Springhill Suites.

Meet Our Member:
Kyle McGinn
What is your current job title and how
long have you been in this position?
I am an Associate Attorney at the
McGinn Law Firm, which is a general practice
firm my great-grandfather founded in Council Bluffs in 1914. I’m the
fourth generation of my family to work at the firm, and I have been
there since April 2015.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
It’s a close competition, but I have to side with Dixie Quicks.
I find myself there regularly, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. A few
favorites include the Dixie Scramble and the chiliquillas.
What is your favorite thing about your neighborhood?
I am astounded by the strong sense of community and history
in my neighborhood. I am fortunate to live in Gibraltar, one of the
city’s many historic neighborhoods, where the residents take great
pride in preserving and enhancing their beautiful older homes. In
addition, I have the best neighbors I could ask for.
What activities or places do you recommend to out-oftowners?
I love bringing my friends and family to Council Bluffs. I always
show them around the 100 Block, grab pastries from Mad Ox
Bakery, and swing through Bayliss Park.
What do you like to do in the spring/summer in Council
Bluffs?
Riding my bicycle has long been a favorite hobby of mine. If
it is a nice day, there is a great chance I’m taking my bicycle out
to enjoy the many recreational trails within the city or the nearby
Wabash Trace.
