BOXTOPS 4 EDUCATION REPORT FROM THE LMS PARENT CLUB
As of the deadline of March 1st, only 500 box tops were turned in – which is A LONG WAY from the
goal of 2200 for an ice cream treat. The Parent Club will be sending those in by the deadline. They
are, however, going to extend the Ice Cream challenge to May 1st to give students and parents a little
longer to collect more Box Tops. The Box Tops that are collected between now and May 1 st will be
held until the Fall collection date but if the goal of 2200 is met by May 1st, the Parent Club will still buy
the students an ice cream treat.
ALL SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT ~ PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
After missing a year, we will, again, be participating in The Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society (LLS) School & Youth program, Pennies for
Patients.
How it Works: Students collect spare change. The change can come
from friends or relatives or underneath the couch cushions. What's
important is that the change is collected. We have decided to do this
project as an all-community effort. We will have a 5 gallon Culligan
water jug labeled and visible during the school day.
If we raise $350 total, we will be given a gift card for a pizza party. This will be a nice end to the
fundraising - the greater reward will be our students learning about the hardships that some children
face in their daily lives and having an experience in philanthropy.
Individual collection boxes are being sent home today, Thursday, March 2 nd and will run through
Wednesday, March 22nd.
KINDERGARTEN
Wow! Time is flying! It seems like it’s going
extra fast since we had so many days off last
week. We are trying to catch up to where we are
supposed to be in math and Fundations phonics.
We just had a checkpoint in math that will help
explain what they know when I meet with you
during conferences. In Fundations phonics we
will start the Unit 3 assessment tomorrow. Most
will pass with flying colors I’m sure!
We are also catching up in Social Studies. We
just had the lessons on President’s Day. The
kids did great! It was neat to see how many of
them have already been to Mount Rushmore and
remembered which presidents are on it.
Remember to sign up for conferences and mark
your calendar for Family Reading Night on the
16th.
A big thank you to parents!!! This time of year, poor behavior in the classroom can increase. I think
it’s spring fever! Many of you have such well-behaved kids and I don’t express my gratitude enough.
I hope they are not too bothered by those that struggle with behaviors.
FIRST & SECOND GRADE
Wow! It doesn’t seem like we’ve had much school since I wrote last!!!
The month of March we are going to be working on responsibility for bringing
our take-home folders each day. Some students are forgetting that we need
them each day. Hopefully, an incentive program in our class will encourage
their responsibility in this area! For parents, asking to see those folders each
day will help us too.
On Wednesday, we had four students home with the stomach flu and several more not feeling up to
par. So, please encourage your child to get extra sleep and take it easy until this illness has past.
This has been a busy week with Nebraska’s 150th birthday on Wednesday and Dr. Seuss’s birthday
on Thursday along with Jump Rope for Heart!
Who knows how much snow we might get before Spring is actually here. So, continue to send boots
as well as tennis shoes whenever the weather warrants it!
Remember Family Reading Night from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16th. The teachers are
working on some ideas to make reading fun for those who can come!
Parent Teacher Conferences will be the following week, Tuesday and Wednesday aft.-eve. and
Thursday am. Pink sheets went home telling how to sign up online. If you don’t have internet access,
Cheryl would be glad to help you get signed up. Remember, no school for students on March 17th,
23rd or 24th.
Thank you for your continued support of your children’s learning!
Mrs. Martin
THIRD & FOURTH GRADE
Welcome to March! We are hard at work preparing for state testing in a few short weeks. Don’t forget
to turn in those February Book-It calendars! March will be the last month for Book-It for this school
year.
For more spelling practice, try Spelling City. Your child can enter the word list and take a “quiz” to
help learn the words. There are even great spelling games, and the site is free!
If your child uses MobyMax at home, be sure to check out the Test Prep icon… the questions are
designed to sound like the ones we will encounter on the state tests. It’s a great way to help prepare!
FIFTH GRADE
The counselor from BMS will be coming to our class on Wednesday March, 8 th to speak about
registering for next year’s 6th grade classes. A packet of information will be sent home that day in
order for students to begin choosing. It will be returned to me and sent on to BMS. Hard to believe it
is that time of year already. If there are any questions, please feel free to call. 
We will be attending an Irish concert by the group Colcannon at the Midwest Theater on March 16 th at
1:00 p.m. Mrs. Hillman, our orchestra teacher, has arranged for us to go. A fun way to celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day!
Remember that the 3rd quarter is quickly coming to an end. Book summaries, memoirs, and testing
dates are fast approaching. Read, study, read!
ATTENTION: FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS & PARENTS
It is not too early to start thinking about looking for 4-5 pictures for
the Power Point on the last day of school for 5th Grade Recognition.
You can turn them in to Cheryl in the school office – ANYTIME!!!
