Research Confirms Significant Benefits of MAKO Technology
Just as technology makes a real difference in our
day-to-day lives—think cell phones, computers,
GPS, and so on—it is making a real difference in
medicine. Orthopedic surgery is one noteworthy
example.
As reported here two years ago, forwardlooking orthopedic surgeons across the country
were embracing a new FDA-approved system
for partial knee replacement (also referred to as
knee resurfacing) called MAKOplasty™. The
MAKO system combines the highly developed

implant positioning, which directly affects
patient mobility, implant longevity, and patient
satisfaction. The studies compared MAKO
with “manual” procedures at a number of
highly-regarded U.S. hospitals, performed by
some of the most respected orthopedic surgeons
in the country.

Recently released clinical research data*
confirms what many orthopedic surgeons
recognized early on: MAKO technology offers
significant improvement in patient outcome for
total hip replacement and for knee resurfacing.
These improved outcomes result from superior
replacement procedures was achieved in only
47 percent of cases. This compares to 84 percent
in MAKO assisted total hip replacement procedures (other studies show even higher rates), as
determined by two-dimensional X-rays. (Optimal
cup positioning has been determined to be a 30°
to 45° inclination and 5° to 25° version.)
For partial knee replacement, studies looked
at patients two years after surgery, which is when
accurate data on revision rates can be determined.
The results: patients who had undergone MAKO
knee resurfacing showed a rate of only 0.4
percent revision, which compares with a rate of

To Your Health
Louis R. Giancola
President & CEO
South County Hospital Healthcare System
At the beginning of a new year, I find
myself reflecting on the one that has
just ended. As I look back on the many
highlights of 2012 here at South County
Hospital, I am very grateful. Again and
again, our patients as well as important third-party organizations
have recognized us for the top-quality care we provide. These accolades validate our mission and the work that is carried out here,
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While there is not enough space
here for me to list every achievement, here are a few:
We are humbled to have been designated, once again,
Number 1 in patient satisfaction in Rhode Island; for 12 consecutive
quarters (that’s three years) patients have consistently rated the
care here as better than at any other hospital in the state. By the
way, these scores are gathered and reported by an independent
third-party organization, Press Ganey (www.pressganey.com).
For the fourth consecutive year, the Hospital was ranked
among the top 25-percent in the country for quality and cited as a
national Harvard Pilgrim Health Honor Roll Hospital based on the
highest standards of patient care. According to a Harvard Pilgrim
spokesperson, “Quality healthcare means doing the right thing, at
the right time, in the right way, and having the best possible results.”
In 2012, we received the designation of Primary Stroke Center
from the Joint Commission— the nation’s predominant standardssetting and accrediting body in healthcare—making us the only
such certified care provider in southern Rhode Island. This
accreditation officially recognizes our adherence to strict guidelines
The Light in the Storm
In late October 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused devastation and
power outages across South County—some neighborhoods were
without power for days. Throughout it all, South County Hospital
kept the lights on, caring for patients 24-hours a day, without a
moment’s pause.
For many who live in South County, the Hospital’s ER was a beacon of hope. Steve Juchnik, RN, Emergency Department
clinical leader, says that during the storm and in the days
for the education of staff, timeliness and appropriateness of care,
data collection protocol, and staff of medical professionals for
stroke diagnosis and treatment.
The South County Hospital Orthopedics Center (a partnership
between South County Hospital, South County Orthopedics,
and VNS Home Health Services) continued to attract patients
from every corner of Rhode Island as well as from neighboring
Massachusetts, Connecticut, and beyond. The skill of the surgeons
and our investment in MAKO technology—an amazing combination of high-tech hardware and software for knee resurfacing
and total hip replacement—are why people keep choosing the
Center for their orthopedic care.
In 2012, our nurses were recognized with the prestigious
Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center, becoming the first hospital in New
England to achieve this recognition. The designation identifies
the extraordinary work carried out every day by our outstanding
staff of nurses, and recognizes the Hospital as one of the best
places for nurses to work.
The generosity of our many supporters is something for which I,
the trustees, medical staff, staff, and volunteers are very grateful. As
we do every winter, we dedicate most of the pages of this newsletter
to sharing their names with you. We’re proud to recognize their
support publicly because without their dedication to the fiscal
health of South County Hospital, we could not fulfill our mission to
“enrich the quality of life” of the community we serve. Thank you!
I hope 2012 was a healthy and fulfilling year for you, and
that your New Year is off to a good start. Wishing you a healthy
and happy 2013.

following, “The emergency department evaluated and treated
421 patients—118 of whom had storm-related injuries or illnesses. Nearly half of those people, 57 of them, were admitted to
the Hospital.”
In addition to a fully functioning (and busy) ER, the rest of
the Hospital was operating on a “business as usual” level. Other
than rescheduling one day’s worth of elective surgeries, the operating
rooms kept going; four serious emergency surgeries were performed
right after the hurricane hit. All inpatient wings, including the

between 4 percent to more than 6 percent in manually
performed partial knee replacement. Also, comparing traditional
total knee replacement patients with MAKO knee patients in
which both compartments of the knee had been replaced, studies
showed that MAKO patients had greater range of motion, greater
quad strength, and higher functional activity at two, four, and
six-weeks after surgery.
much more accessible. This accessibility means that perhaps more
than half of patients who have been advised to have a total knee
replacement but would be better served by a partial knee procedure,
can reap the benefits. And because partial knee replacement
leaves the patient’s ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and PCL
(posterior cruciate ligament) intact, post-surgical mobility is
improved, and patients report a more “natural feeling” knee and gait.
How it works
While every surgeon is dedicated to achieving the best results
consistently, without the assistance of this technology it’s just not
possible, as the data clearly shows. MAKO allows unprecedented,
consistent accuracy in hip and knee surgery.
To understand how the MAKO system provides superior
outcomes in total hip replacement surgery, it’s essential to understand how the joint works. In the hip, a “cup” (acetabulum) holds
the ball (femoral head) of the joint. In total hip replacement
surgery, the acetabulum is fitted with a cup implant to accommodate the new femoral head implant. Proper positioning of this
cup is essential to the quality of the outcome; when the cup is
not positioned at the optimal angle for the patient’s anatomy, a
number of problems can occur: dislocation of the joint, leg length
discrepancy, discomfort when walking, and a shortened implant life.
With knee resurfacing, the MAKO system is providing
superior outcomes for similar reasons. But in addition to allowing
the surgeon to remove only the diseased bone and to position
the implants optimally, the technology makes partial knee
replacement—a procedure many orthopedic surgeons have shied
away from because of the complexity of performing it manually—
Ahead of the Curve
The physicians of South County Orthopedics & PT
immediately recognized the advantages the MAKO system
offered. They became the first MAKO-certified surgeons in
Rhode Island—and in New England—to do so. To date, they
have performed well over 1,500 MAKO procedures. For more
information, visit www.schospital.com/orthopedics or to schedule
a consultation with one of the doctors, call 401 789-1422.

intensive care unit, were up and running. The Women & Newborn
Care Unit was busy, too. Nine babies were born at the Hospital in the
four days following the storm. Pharmacy, lab, food services—often
unseen but vital—every department was staffed and doing its job.
Off-site entities—South County Surgical Supply, South
County Quality Care, and VNS (the visiting nurse service)—
were all without power but able to use space at the Hospital
to keep their services going. The Hospital’s oncology practice,
located in a building directly across the street from the Hospital,
was without power so accommodations were made to see patients
using space within the Hospital.
The Hospital also provided a haven for police, fire, and
EMS personnel during the storm, offering free meals, hot coffee
and a warm, dry environment—with lights!
How did the Hospital do it? Generator power. Unlike a
typical homeowner’s emergency generator, however, the back-up
system a hospital uses must start instantaneously. These generators
must be located above ground, with their own energy supply
Most of South County was in darkness for days following Hurricane Sandy.
The Hospital provided services to patients and emergency response personnel
throughout the outages.
(in this case, oil), and must be able to provide a considerable amount
of power. It’s an expensive set-up. But as Lee Ann Quinn, RN, explained, “We need a constant flow of energy for life support services.
We need to keep ventilators functioning for those patients requiring
respiratory support; we need power for patients needing life-sustaining
medications that run through pumps that require electricity; and most
of all we need to keep our operating rooms functioning at all times.”
When the lights were out everywhere else, South County
Hospital was a beacon of expert, compassionate care, always here
for you and your family.
