URANQUINTY PROGRESS ASSOCIATION Inc
This year has already proved to be a busy one for the UPA. Following on from the Uranquinty Community Safety Group (UCSG)
emergency evacuation day in October, a community barbeque will be held at the Hall on Saturday 9 May which will continue
the process of informing the community about emergency safety plans.
Wagga Wagga City Council will provide the opportunity for Community Consultation on the Village Overland Flood Flow Studies
at the Community Hall on Tuesday 24 March from 7pm. More information on flood planning can be obtained at: http://
yoursaywagga.com.au/floodfutures. We look forward to seeing members of the community at this important information session.
ANZAC Day (Saturday 25 April 2015) is not far away. Our committee has been busy once again organising the service and
March. Remember to put this event on your calendar. The Annual East v’s West Cricket match will also be on again at the oval
during the afternoon. More details of the afternoon events will be advertised closer to the day.
The UPA is currently in the final development stage of a website for Uranquinty and the Online Committee hope to have the
site live before Easter, so please keep your eye out for this new page which will provide access for residents and visitors to
information on our village, and what’s happening here. If you have any suggestions, comments or events you would like
included on the website, please email [email protected] with details. We have both business and community pages
and if you would like to have some input please email your contribution by 31 March.
Work on planning for the Eco-Cultural Garden is still ongoing and Riverina Water have been approached regarding the use of
their water storage tower site on the corner of Best and Uranquintry Streets as the optimal site for the garden. To date we
have not received any formal response to our request but will post any information on the website as it comes to hand to
ensure that everyone is aware of developments.
The condition of road surfaces on Grady’s Road and Connorton Street has again been raised with Council. They have
responded that budget constraints impact on the maintenance of their existing sealed road network and that currently there are
no plans to seal Connorton Street or Grady’s Road. However, if there are particular issues you would like to raise with Council,
there is a useful app available for smartphones called “Snap Send Solve” which enables a photo and brief report to be sent to
Council advising them of any issues for which Council is responsible. UPA has had some success using this app to upgrade
waste bins in the rest area and playground.
For those who would like to make use of our wonderful community hall please contact Kate Salmon on 6922 9899.
Thank you, to all who attend regular UPA meetings and support the association, I encourage all residents of the village to
come and participate in our monthly meetings and events.
Finally I would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Easter. Enjoy the break and we wish you and your family a peaceful
and relaxing holiday.
Meetings are held monthly (7:30pm, 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Hall)
Next meeting 14 April 2015

UPS Swimming Carnival
2015 Kinders
The weather was kind to us for a lovely start to
the year for our Uranquinty Swimming Carnival
which we held at The Rock Memorial Swimming
Pool in February. The Kookaburra’s reign in the
pool came to an abrupt end this year as the
Rosella’s were announced Champion House.
Congratulations to the Rosella’s and everyone
who tried their best on the day.
We have a lovely Kinder group this year and they
have all settled in beautifully. Mrs Forrell is very
pleased with how responsibly they are all taking
to the dynamic L3 Literacy program.
Small School’s Swimming Carnival
On Monday 16th February, the Wagga
Community of Small Schools met together at the
Oasis Pool for the Small School’s Carnival. The
weather was once again perfect and all
competitors showed excellent sportsmanship.
From this carnival we had many representatives
go on to the Wagga PSSA carnival held on 27th
February.
Regional Swimming Carnival
Welcome BBQ
Our Regional Swimmers competed in Albury on
In February all school families were invited to an
evening BBQ where new and existing families
could meet in an informal setting. The kids had a
great time and the new portable BBQ donated
by the 2014 Year 6 students, was ‘christened’
and proved to be a hit with everyone there.
Monday 9th March at the Regional PSSA
Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to Ryley
Miegel -8years 50m Freestyle, Olivia Graham,
Holly Hennessy, Caitlin Rodham and Hannah
Billett – PP5 Relay and Hannah who also
competed in 50m & 100m freestyle, 50m
backstroke, 50m Butterfly and the Individual
Medley. We are very proud of each of our
competitors and know they represented us very
well on the day.
Yr 6 Leadership Day
Recently the Year 6 students from the Wagga
Community of Small Schools met together at
Collingullie PS for a Leadership Day. Miss Fuller
and Miss Post provided an engaging day of
challenges and tips for student leadership. The
students now have ongoing projects that they
will collaborate on via technology to overcome
the distance between schools.
Thank You
The school and the P&C would like to
acknowledge and thank Kerrie Anne Downes for
her generous support in auditing the P&C
finances over the past few years. We very much
appreciate your generosity Kerrie Anne!
Mud Monsters
Science Club
We are very appreciative of Skye Lewington and
Amanda Bell’s leadership of the Mud Monsters
(gardening group). We would like to thank many
people who have helped in this endeavour;
Kasey Ankers, Jenny, Lou & Derek Lewington,
Wagga
Forest Nursery, Darling Irrigation, Bunnings,
Major’s Mulch, Brett & Melissa Tingle, Jason &
Kerry Cox for their support. The students love
getting their hands dirty and are really enjoying
harvesting kale, spring onions, tomatoes and
leeks.
We are so grateful to Origin Energy for the
donation of our Little Bits Science Kit. The boys
and girls are having an amazing time as they
easily connect circuitry bits via magnets to
create moving parts that light up and spin, with
endless creations to be made! Thanks to Scott
Howie for his assistance and we welcome
science enthusiasts to join us on Tuesday
lunchtimes for Science Club.
Uranquinty Playgroup
About Playgroup NSW
Playgroup is an informal session where mums, dads, grandparents, caregivers, children and babies meet up
in a relaxed and friendly environment. The adults stay to interact with other adults and to play with their
children.
• Playgroup gives children an opportunity to have fun, make new friends and develop new skills
through informal play
• Playgroup provides parents and carers with an opportunity to meet other parents and carers, make
friends and share ideas and experiences
• Playgroup also allows parents and carers to spend quality time with their children, encouraging,
helping or simply playing with their children
• Playgroup is not-for-profit
• Currently around Australia there are 103,000 families regularly participating in Playgroups, meeting
in halls, neighborhood centres, churches, private homes and parks
There is really no typical Playgroup these days. You will see families from all walks of life at Playgroup.
In fact, in NSW there are over 1,500 Playgroup sessions with over 25,000 parents and children meeting
each week.
Uranquinty Playgroup is held in the Neighbourhood Centre, Connorton Street, each Tuesday from 10am to
12pm. During the session we have free play, games, craft and morning tea with tea and coffee for the adults.
Membership to Playgroup NSW is $39 per family per year and a small amount each week to cover costs.
HAVE YOUR SAY:
ECO CULTURAL GARDEN.
The Progress Association are looking
to improve the appearance and
liveability of their village To achieve
this goal they have a series of planned
projects one of which involves the
development of an eco cultural
garden.
The site being considered is the
village water tower .
It is believed that the use of this site
will be beneficial to the local
community, visitors and Riverina
Water.
It is the beautification and better
productive use of the site that will
enhance the area .
The site can then be used for a variety of studies and growth of native
species and an area to be used by all. The Progress Association would
appreciate some feed back on this idea and are keen for comments from
Residents on this idea.
Please contact Uranquinty Progress association members for further details or
to express your thoughts.
Contact details on front page.
The Quinty Mens Shed Inc.
(Locals supporting locals)
Our shed finally has a roof, thanks to the many locals who pitched in to get the job done. What a fantastic effort all
round, your help has been much appreciated. We are now seeking funding to secure utilities such as power, water and
sewerage connections so that we may start operations from the site.
Shedders have been busy in the community, erecting new notice boards (courtesy of Origin’s Uranquinty Power
Station) at the general store and the hall, with another notice board to be erected at the neighbourhood centre as soon
as we have a definite location identified. Members have also been active in some general maintenance activities at the
community hall, while identifying future community projects to engage our members.
With completion not too far away, we wish to extend the offer of membership to any interested persons. All enquiries
to Brain Mahony on 69 229 776.
Cheers

Our new kitchen has been completed and is a wonderful improvement for the centre.
We would like to thank Wagga Wagga City Council and Origin for their contribution
and support of this project. And a big thankyou to our local tradie Ryan Meigel for
his commitment to getting this job finished on time.
The centre is a wonderful space to hold a variety of functions. Our new kitchen is
twice the size of the old one and is a very functional space.
New hire rates as of 20/4/2015 are;
Private function/ meeting day time $25.00 Private function/ meeting night time
$50.00
We also hire out the tables and chairs for a very reasonable price.
We have noticed a number of children at the centre on the weekends who are
climbing on the shade sails. This is a public park on the weekends and is open for anyone to enjoy but I
would ask that parents ensure their children are doing the right thing when they are there.
Please phone Sue on 69229772 or Belinda on 69229886 for any bookings or information.

WORLD WAR 1 MEMORIAL.
On Tuesday 30th July 1918 a number of
residents gathered at Uranquinty to erect a fence for an avenue of
trees to honour those from the district who enlisted during the First
World War. “Those gentlemen who volunteered to do the work
were as follows.
Messrs Taber (2) Jack (2) Snodgrass, T. Smith, J .Ball, J .
Auchetto , J. Taylor, Kohlhagen,
Stoessel ,Keil,Lang, (2) Beattie, Stone (2) Hall and Hudson .The
fence was finished and the holes sunk for the trees in one day.
On Wednesday 31st July the planting took place .
Mrs Hall planted the first tree as her son Sec. Lient. Roy Hall was
the first to enlist from the district who paid the supreme sacrifice.
36 trees of the silky oak variety were planted . The ladies provided
an
excellent dinner and afternoon tea on both days . It is intended to erect a monument later. “
(The Albury Banner and Wodonga Express. Friday 2 August 2018. )
This avenue of trees was located in Pearson Street behind the railway station and silos.
To commemorate the Anzac centenary it was decided to replant this avenue leading up to The war
memorial at Wirraway Park.
A grant for $ 1,970.00 was approved by the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Programme via the Dept of Veteran Affairs.
The trees have been planted and a plaque bearing the names of those who enlisted will be unveiled on Anzac Day. Some
of the trees have not survived but will be replanted as soon as new stock is available.
“ HONOUR TO GOD
LOYALTY TO THE QUEEN
FAITHFUL SERVICE TO THE SICK
AND SUFFERING.” URANQUINTY
RED CROSS BRANCH
Albury Banner and Wodonga Express Friday 25th September 2014.
“ URANQUINTY.
A branch of the Red Cross Society was formed here last week . Mrs F Alldis being secretary . Over 40
have joined and receive sewing from the Wagga Depot every week. The local patriots are holding a social here on the 25th in aid
of the fund and a willing committee of ladies and gentlemen will try and make it a success. “
This strong group of ladies banded together knitting socks and balaclavas for the soldiers going to war , and many fine parcels of
goods were sent off to the troops.
At the end of the First World War there was a tapering off of activity until the outbreak of WW2 when the branch was reformed.
A meeting was held on the 23rd September 1939 convened by Mrs N. Smith and Mrs A Lee for the purposes of reforming A
branch of the Red Cross Society. The President was Mrs A Lewington Sen.
Vice Presidents. Mrs A Lee and Mrs Dengate
Secretary. Mrs W.F.Stone Treasurer Mrs N.
Smith.
A grand opening of the branch was held on the 11th October 1939 and ladies from The Rock branch came and instructed the
gathering on the aims and activities of Red Cross.
Many comfort parcels were sent to the front including pyjamas, underclothing and bed linen . Members also undertook courses
in First Aid and home nursing . When the Airforce Base was established members visited the hospital once a week taking cakes,
and gifts to patients . These visits continued during the operation of the migrant camp.
The local branch continued to be active for many years until numbers declined and the branch was finally closed in July 1983. In
1978 a group of younger residents set up a Red Cross Coffee Club as a social club but still raising funds for Red Cross .
Meetings were held mainly in members homes and guest speakers and demonstrations were the order of the day. Fund raisers
were held twice a year and Melbourne Cup Lunch was an annual event at Junette Greenaway’s for many years. The Coffee Club
eventually closed in August 1988 due to a decline in numbers.
