Quinceañeras Traditions
The Quinceañera is a celebration marking a young girl’s right
of passage from childhood to womanhood with its new
responsibilities. It is a time of rejoicing and reaffirming the
commitment to family, friends, faith and community.
The Quinceañera custom is traced back to the Aztecs who
marked a girl’s 15th birthday with social and religious
ceremonies. The custom spread from Mexico to Central and
Latin American and is becoming more and more popular in the
southwestern U.S.
The most important part of the celebration is a special Mass
dedicated to the honoree--La Misa de Accion de Gracias. The
birthday girl, usually in a full-length formal gown, arrives with
her court of honor comprised of 14 young girls, damas, and
their escorts, chambelanes. It is customary for the Quinceañera
to receive special gifts, including a tiara, bracelet or ring,
earrings a cross or medal and a Bible or prayer book and
rosary. In Hispanic cultures, it is traditional for the gifts to be
given to the Quinceañera by padrinos or godparents There are
varied traditions that are observed such as placing a bouquet of
flowers, a rosary and prayer book (symbols of childhood) at the
statue of the Virgen de Guadalupe or Mary. A quinceañera
pillow decorated with the Quinceañera’s name is placed in
position for the girl to use during Mass.
Another tradition involves the Quinceañera changing shoes,
from flat-soled versions worn at church to the high heels of
womanhood.
After Mass, the social highlight is the dance and reception,
which can be as elaborate as a wedding reception. It can take
months to stage such an event, which often includes food,
music, flowers and formalwear. The Quinceañera dress is
traditionally white or pink, but all bright colors are gaining
popularity. Damas also wear full-length gowns; escorts wear
tuxedos. At the reception, the honoree makes a grand entrance
her formal introduction to society. The first dance is reserved
for her Father; the next for her escort and the other
chambelanes.
A traditional toast, or brindis, to the
Quinceañera follows, and guests will be invited to offer their
congratulations and best wishes. A porcelain Quinceañera doll,

Quinceañera’s younger sister as a sign that she is leaving the
things of childhood behind. The Quinceañera remains a
cherished tradition.

more than three colors. Beige with white and lavender, for
example, makes a pretty combination. Each table should
seat a maximum of eight guests. For a sensational effect,
place some flowers in the middle of each table – be sure
to include lots of roses! Decorate a corner of the room
with extra candles, lights, and flowers for special photo
opportunities.
• The Music: As much as we love salsa, hip-hop, and
merengue, a princess has to master the traditional waltz.
When you choose your favorite waltz song, practice your
steps! Your party planner can help you find a dance
teacher or choreographer if you need to brush up on your
moves. Don't forget to book a dance orchestra, singing
group, or DJ.
• The Food: Replace elaborate, tiered cakes with
chocolate fountains! Using fondue-style skewers, you can
dip a piece of fruit into the chocolate, or offer petits fours,
small pastries, tartlets, or a selection of biscuits on a silver
serving tray.
• The Guest Book: Allow your guests to give their
impression of your party in writing. Sure, once the party’s
over, you'll pack the book away in a box, but just imagine
when you stumble upon it 10 years from now! You will
remember your quince again, laugh at the note written by
the boy you had a crush on, and smile at your abuela’s
wise words.
• Accessories: You can go with a classic, Austriancrystal tiara, or be adventurous with tiaras sporting
feathers or pastel-colored stones. Be even more daring by
swapping your high-heeled shoes for tennis shoes –

for formal events like quinceañeras and weddings. Check

2. Set a Budget.
Formal cakes range widely in price. You can find a threetier cake that feeds 100 guests for a reasonable $150 or
for a whopping $600! This is why it’s important to decide

bakery. You can easily go overboard with fancy options!
For example, rather than upgrade to the more expensive
rolled fondant frosting, stick to butter cream or
marshmallow frosting.
3. Schedule an Appointment with the Baker.

Jude says: You should have a general idea of the look you want.
Bring in some pictures from magazines, or test out your ’do virtually
in the Seventeen Salon. Ask your stylist for advice — she’ll know if
your look is good for your hair type. If you can splurge, Jude
suggests doing a trial run to test out your ideas. But FYI — it’s just as
pricey as the real thing!
4. Don’t wear that old T-shirt!
Jude says: Always wear a button-down shirt. If you don’t, you’ll end
up having to cut your shirt off to save your hairstyle. Make sure you
shower beforehand too. You don’t want your stylist’s hard work (and
your money!) to go down the drain.
5. Remember that drastic changes to your hair take more time.
Hairstylist Jude Santiago from Orbit Salon in Chicago has styled for
quinceañeras and knows her stuff! She was even named one of the
25 Best Hairstylists by Latina magazine. Here are her quick tips for a
smooth salon experience.
Jude says: If coloring your hair, do so two or three days before your
party. Whether you go darker or lighter, you’ll get stains on your skin
that won’t come out immediately. (They’ll wear off naturally when you
sweat.) And if you’re unhappy with the result, at least you’ll have
some time to fix it!
1. First stop: The drive-thru window!
If you want extensions, that process can take up to six hours to
complete. You won’t feel like going to your quinceañera afterward!
Do extensions a few days beforehand. Or try clip-in extensions. Jude
says those can be done on the same day as your quinceañera and
removed later on that night.
Jude says: Eat something before you come to the salon. You want a
beautiful head of hair, not a headache!
6. Expect to pay a little more than you would for a regular
haircut.
2. Arrive on time. Traffic can be a real downer, so plan ahead.
Jude says: If you’re getting the works (eyebrows: $15; makeup: $50;
and a fancy hairdo: $75), expect to pay around $200, including tips.
Hairstylists usually get a 15 percent tip, but Jude says they’ll bounce
off the walls if they get 20 percent! If someone shampoos your hair,
waxes your eyebrows, or applies your makeup, tip them individually.
Jude says: Salons usually have people booked after you, so if
you’re late, the stylist might be rushing through your appointment.
3. Come with inspiration.

• Practica cómo maquillarás tus ojos un día antes de la
fiesta. Así tendrás tiempo para cambiar lo que no te
guste.

¡Sí!
• Gasta un poco más y regálate una nueva sombra para
párpados. Las marcas un poco más caras tienen
pigmentos más fuertes, por lo que el color dura mucho
más. Prueba con: marcas de tiendas de departamentos,
como MAC o Bobbi Brown.
• Experimenta con sombras audaces. Los colores
aguamarinas, púrpuras y verdes intensos son excelentes
opciones para el otoño. Prueba con: el juego de 1 tono
de sombra para ojos de los realzadores CoverGirl Eye
Enhancers, de color Paraíso del Agua (Aqua Paradise), a
$3.00 en las farmacias.
• Arquea tus pestañas, ¡destaca tu mirada! Puedes
conseguir un arqueador de pestañas por poco dinero en
las farmacias.
• ¡Fusiona los colores! Hazlo con un aplicador de
esponja, para evitar que se marquen líneas entre ellos.
• NO te gastes todo el dinero en una máscara para
pestañas. QUÉDATE con las marcas que se encuentran
en las farmacias, como CoverGirl, Maybelline y L'Oreal,
que son excelentes productos a precios razonables.
• NO apliques delineador debajo de tus ojos: ¡sólo hará
que se vean más pequeños! PRUEBA con un aplicador
angular y haz una línea de sombra para párpados debajo
de las pestañas del párpado inferior.
• NO elijas un maquillaje en grises intensos para los
ojos si también usarás un color oscuro en los labios.
RESALTA una de las dos áreas y elige colores neutros
para la otra. De esta manera, evitarás que el maquillaje
quede muy cargado.
• NO te depiles demasiado las cejas. En otoño, las cejas
más tupidas quedan mejor y más naturales. DEDÍCATE
a ellas un par de días antes de la fiesta para evitar que la
piel quede irritada.

• DON’T Empty your wallet on mascara. DO stick to
drugstore brands like CoverGirl, Maybelline, and L'Oreal,
all which make excellent formulas at reasonable prices.
• DON’T apply eyeliner under your eyes – it will make
them look smaller! DO try applying a stroke of eye
shadow along your bottom lash line with an angled brush.
• DON’T choose an intense smoky eye if you're wearing
a dark lip color. DO play up one feature and go neutral
with the other. That way, you'll avoid looking like you're
wearing too much makeup.
• DON’T over-tweeze your brows! A full brow is hot for
fall and looks more natural. DO tweeze your brows a
couple days before your quince to prevent red, puffy skin.

Do!
• Splurge on a cool new shadow. Pricier brands tend to
have stronger pigments, making the color last longer.
Try: Department store brands, like MAC or Bobbi Brown.
• Experiment with trendy shades. Deep aquas, purples,
and greens are all great choices for fall. Try: CoverGirl
Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadow in Aqua Paradise ($3,
drugstores).
• Curl your lashes, which will make your eyes pop! You
can pick up a curler at your drugstore for a couple bucks.
• Blend! Use a fluffy brush to blend colors and avoid
harsh-looking lines.
• Practice your eye makeup before the big day. It'll give
you time to change anything you don't like.

and hands away from your face. Also, change your
pillowcase every few days, keep your phone clean
and definitely no picking or squeezing a pimple, no
matter how annoying it is.
Emergency fixes
• Disguise pimples that show up the day of your
celebration by applying an acne patch to smooth out
the bump and help your makeup go on smoother.
• Stash blotting sheets in your purse, so you can do a
quick blot anytime. This'll keep your skin looking
fresh and free of shine in pictures without messing
up your makeup.

Skin regimen 411
• If possible, start your new complexion plan at least four
to six weeks before your quinceañera.
• Cleanse your face morning and night. If your skin is oily
or acne-prone, choose a wash that contains benzoyl
peroxide. This will help get rid of those pimples.
• After cleansing, smooth on an oil-free moisturizer.
Choose one with sunscreen to protect your skin from
sun damage. Or, if you're acne-prone, look for one
with salicylic acid. This will dissolve oil, while
moisturizing your skin.
• Zap any pimples that pop up by applying a spot
treatment containing salicylic acid one to three times
daily until the spot is gone.
• During the day, control oil with blotting sheets. These
will take down shine and soak up extra oil.

On your big day, you will be sooo busy that you'll hardly
have time to snap your own photos. Even if you hire a
photographer, my first tip is to always designate a dama
or Chambelán to coordinate las fotos. The photographer
does not know which of your amigos y familia are most
special to you, so it's best to have a loved one guide him

• Mientras se preparan: estas fotos pueden incluirte
